1400-1500 works well as a start-up/warm-up RPM. That is also where Kubota sets the idle speed on the RTV 900. So there is a clue.....

Also, I have been paying attention to how long it takes to warm up the HST fluid.

At +15 degrees there is frost on my top and tilt controls. After ten minutes running at 1500 rpm's the frost is melted and the metal fittings are starting to get warm to the touch.

WIKCO SPLS400197..... this is exactly the unit I use.... although I bought it under a different name.

It works well for me. The only complaint is that the legs are sort of useless but that is a non-issue because it is supported by the hitch anyway.

Kubota B's have narrow clearance in back, no clearance in front. Need narrow profile chains. Found them, made in Scandanavia, at TireChainsRequired.com. Very nice, and knowledgable. "H" pattern. I will keep you informed.

Now this is cold - a mate of mine used to work in Antartica during the summer as a field geologist (mapping rock types needed for oil surveying).

Be sure that the front and mid drive shafts are correctly phased, the U joints should be in exact alignment with each other. I also noticed on my 47 that the drive shaft quick couples chatter when not under load.

It's all in your application. What makes the truck great for you may make it less usefull for someone who actively uses it for farm work. Or major offroad work. The end result is Ford is selling more of them than ever.

I've done some welding with all 3 forms. I'm fond of stick welding cause I'm not too bad at it. Takes some technique, but that also works for MIG. I love MIG since I can get a good weld really easy.

TIG. I suck at TIG. It's hard to balance the power with the distance and hand feeding the new material. Also had problems with the thin material it's used on. I'd get it to hot and create a hole.

If most of the material you will be using is ferous like steel, I'd stick with MIG or stick. Unless you plan on doing a lot of thin welding, I'd stay away from TIG cause you won't get enough time to develop and keep the skill needed to get a good weld.

The guys that are good at TIG get respect from me. It's hard.

Brokenarrow, I would open major panels and the air filter and check for mice evidence in spring. View it as part of spring maintenance. If it's a serious cover that wouldn't normally be opened or if a mouse nest won't cause harm, I wouldn't bother. But do a hood opening, air cleaner check and go from there.

I should probably open up the wife's old '85 olds that has been sitting in my shop for 2.5 years. The truck is probably filled with mice.

I did use poison out in my shop. I put it in spots where the dogs couldn't get to it.

First of all I thank all that have responded and tried to help. The only time I would need for the differential lock<br>
to work is when I plow snow on my property. I have an 800 foot driveway and a large parking area. My previous tractor was a Ford Jubelee and it did not have this option.<br>
So I was looking forward to trying it when my wheels started<br>
to spin going backwards up hill. Today I ordered tirechains called Dou Grip.<br>
This I hope will help with some or most of the spinning problem. <br>

jones, I would think that any new BH would lose it's value somewhat. If that's a big concern you would probably lose nothing if you could find a nice used one.

In terms of the bigger picture, sometimes in life we just need and deserve to reward ourselves.

My John Deere blower uses a cable - works great. It has a T-handle that locks with about a 1/4 turn and a nice rubber boot on the deflector end so it isn't bothered by the build-up of snow and ice. This was a separate option but I don't remember the cost.

The old red had lead in much the same as all older paints. There is just one paint for both units from Case-IH at this time.

Mark is right, of course, the point I was trying to make was two-fold, but maybe I wasn't clear enough.

First, the compounds which are likely to harm some seals won't be found in something like 'synthetic' engine or transmission fluid, only in specialized hydraulic fluid.

Secondly, the stuff you would buy retail will be tested and proven on 'automotive grade' seals for warranty / liability reasons.

When is the 170 changing? Or did I miss that?
Your opinion? Would you wait? Also I am nit planning on major heavy use for the skidsteer (heavy meaning wieght) would you just go with the 170 or its new equivalent? Or if you had the bucks would you upgrade to the 185? Is the 185 factory air a option in the cab or standard? I was debating over air or not depending on price? I have my dealer looking into prices for me now. Although I will wait to see if we go back to work or not, that discount is worth the wait.

Could be the starter fuse. Check the 30 amp solenoid fuse. Could be your problem. Look on page 65
of your owners manual for the location. Hope this helps.

drdrctk, I am not familiar with your model tractor. In most cases there is an access panel that can be removed from the clutch bellhousing which allows access to the clutch. There may be a good possibility that you can do this and use something like some thin plexiglass wedges or some use a screw driver (I don't recommend this) and very gentley tap the wedge in between the clutch and that pressure plate and or flywheel to free the clutch up on the input shaft. You may need to rotate the flywheel several times to access all parts of the clutch disk for separation. This sure beats the cost of splitting the tractor.

I agree with others here, genuine shop manuals are spendy, but typically worth having. I got the Technical manual and Parts manual for my JD790, and the total tab came to $230. One is not much good without the other. The Technical manual covers 670, 770, 790, 870, 970, and 1070 ($150), but the parts manual only covers the 790 ($80). I gulped when I found out the price, but didn't hesitate. After just a couple weeks, they've already been very helpful. Corrected some mis-information I had gotten from a mechanic, and answered several questions I had.
