Grassgod, I did a little research on Ferrari spiders, I believe that is the model you said you had. I found a good deal on a used 2004 with 8K miles at $224,000. You could by four corvettes for that price.

You mentioned the expense of maintenance, what type of tires do you use? I don't remember the exact size on the vette. The rear is a different size than the front and they are directional. The stock tire is a low profile Z rated Goodyear Eagle. These are in the range of $250 to $275 per tire. Dave

My wife and I both like to travel and the majority of our trips have been in the USA and the Caribbean. A few years ago our friends wanted to take a cruise to Alaska, the wife didn't want to go, she likes to cruise. Her comment, it will be cold.

I promised her a trip to Hawaii, which I had no desire to go. We did both trips and she liked Alaska and I liked Hawaii. We plan to return to both places.

We agree together on trips, unless it's a company paid trip, and she just tags along. I tend to make all of the arrangements and allow time for what she wants to do, shopping.

We have two other couples we travel with and most of the time we split up during the day and get back together for dinner.

As someone else said, you need to compromise. We have been married for 36 years. If you cheerfully agree to go on the trip, then she will probably agree to a shorter time.

I was reading through the applications information in the Weatherhead catalog (one of the larger makers of hydraulic fittings - see links below) and came across this warning. Just curious if it applies to the synthetic oils we've talked about, or are they unrelated?<br>

"Petroleum or Mineral Oil Based Hydraulic Fluids - ... good general purpose fluids ... All Weatherhead fittings and O-rings can be used with these fluids." <br>

"Straight Synthetic Hydraulic Fluids - is a general term applied to such products as Pydraul, Lindol, Cellulubes 90, 150, 180, 220, etc. ... O-rings must be made of "Butyl" compound or they will "swell" when contacted by synthetic fluids."<br>
<br>
This latter note clearly excludes the "Buna-N" O-ring material that is in almost all of Weatherhead's fittings, and I believe is the standard material.<br>
<br>
If this note applied to the synthetic engine and transmission oils so popular with many, and often used in our hydraulic systems, there would be a real concern with O-ring hydraulic fittings, quick disconnects, and other applications. I believe most of these use Buna-N O-rings. <br>

Are the synthetic engine oils different from the synthetics they are talking about, or should this be a concern? <br>

Like I said, I feel your pain also, we are the same way. Heck we have it so bad that every time the COLA goes up so many points the GAS tax automatically rises also. The state dont even have to vote on a tax increase here. It is built right into the system and NO legislator has to take the heat for asking for it. That stinks!

Not a plumber but helped dig a few lines (septic) up. If you travel over the area with vehicals especially or clear the snow from the area regularily, I would go atleast 6'. where you are why take the chance for that extra foot or so. Also if you come up from the depths outside you should insulate it heavily. Anouther suggestion is, if you only go 3-4 foot down (which is dangerous) make sure you place 1-2" pink styrofoam over the top of the pipes maybe a foot or so wide, this will help keep the ground from freezing under the insulation.

That is something definitely wrong then. The 180's are loud but not that loud. Did you look at the new 185.B yet You can not hear any of the hydraulics on those and the engine just purrs.

Do you have a cab enclosure on yours?

I was looking up what kind of a machine a BX23 was and noticed it was not listed under the "all makes listing" but was listed under the Kubota listing, why is this so? It had very few specs (no power) provided. I then looked up JD 4300 (my model) and there was no listing. Question is, how do I add my model to the list, and if so could you suggest that each member make an effort to ensure their model is listed. Much appreciated. BTW have not heard from you how I can help with the specs section after you solicited help from folks - is this still in process?<br>

In poor road conditions, the best safety factor usually costs nothing regardless of your tires and other bells and whistles - REDUCE SPEED. I can't begin to count the number of times I have seen vehicles loose control in snow etc just because the driver was going too fast.

A popular misconception with hydraulic systems, usually caused by somewhat misleading advertising, is that the flow rates are going to be much higher than they are in the real world.

The first big trick is to state 'total' hydraulic output, without explain the system in any great detail.

On average, the power steering system gets the first 40% of the rated output. Notice I used the words "first" and "rated" in that sentence. If the system has a "rated" output of 12GPM the power steering will get 40% or about 5GPM, however, the power steering system is normally fed by a "priority flow divider valve" which means in reality the power steering system will take the first 5GPM regadless of how much the system is making. The remote SCV only gets what is leftover.

System losses, such as the fluid being routed through a FEL or the 3pth will further reduce flow rates, as will the fact that some published ratings are actually "bench rates", that means they rated the pump on a test bench, not in a tractor.

Most spec. sheets (if you read them carefully) do actually break it down and state the maximum for the remote outlets.

The ROPS stay up and is outside the cab for the folding models. I believe Curtis makes a model for fixed ROPS that is inside the cab.

1*Why not use your BX? That's what it's designed for. Get a tiller for the back and use the FEL.
2*Check out the Simplicity Legacy.
3*I have to agree with AV8R. Isn't the BX perfect for that type of work ?
If it were me, I would use that money for BX attachments (tiller, mower, blades, Etc.), really no need for a garden tractor.
4*My point is you may want to shop around in newspapers, estate auctions or some dealers and pick up some nice used stuff.
5* I guess one reason to get the GT could be that you use the BH on the BX so much that you don't want to take it off and on.
6*But that said if I knew I was going to have new GT anyway and not use the BX for mowing, I would skip the BX and get a bigger tractor like a B7800 or a Grand L.

1*I already have a tiller on the back and a blade on the front of my Bolens Which saves me from having to keep switching implements on the BX23 every time I want to use a blade or tiller.
Most of what I would do with a tiller and blade would be quick small jobs.
I sorta hate to switch implements on the BX23 for 15 to 30 minute jobs.
Also the Bolens is good for getting into small tight areas that don't have enough room to maneuver the BX23.
The Bolens is gear drive and Manual lift attachments. Just thought it would be nice to upgrade to hydrostatic drive and hydraulic lifts.
2*I did that and I agree they are nice, but I don't need that much Garden Tractor to supplement the BX23.
3*Correct If the jobs are large enough.
4*Used is probably the way I will have to go. If the Money is to great I will just stick with the BOLENS.
Since I have the Bolens tiller and front blade it would be great to find a good used GT with Hydro Trans
And hydraulic lift that will take the attachments I have already. I don't need a mower as The BX23 has the 60'' mmm and I have a wards MTD with a 46' mower.
5* That's about right.
6*In my case the Bx 23 is big enough to do what I need it for and I do most of the mowing with it.

Yep, had similar problem... found that the height control lever for the mowing deck had not sprung back to its neutral position and was still partially in the raise quadrant and was overiding the loader controls just as you describe. So when it happens again simply move the deck lever to its neutral position and alls OK. One day I'll get around to adjusting the spring on the deck lever.

With out driving it myself its hard to pin point but I have a question. Does it do it on dry roads at all? If the ABS kicks in on DRY roads at low speeds (usually 5 mph and lower)its most likely a front sensor.This is done by watching the scanner for the one that drops out 3 or more mph than the other ones. Depending on build date some come with the whole hub. If its doing it only on snow covered roads and you feel its NOT NORMAL ABS operation (remember they are very sensitive) then I would check the rear rotors for rust and corrosion that could limit surface contact between pad and rotor cause front to do most of the work and skid. (rusty/corroded rotors very common on GM)

Have the same problem. When she see's me on here she calls me Johnny Joe Tractor. Normally I think nothing of it until she makes the 3rd or 4th pass and says hey Johnny Joe Tractor. This is when I get EVIL thoughts involving the back hoe and several bags of lime. Then she asks me what im smiling about. At this time I usually throw some money at her and this makes her go away for a few hours.
