I like looking at tractors in person and on the internet. Got to wondering about the life of a tractor. I realize much goes into that, lack of service, operator abuse, the way equipment has been serviced, as it should be taken care of, from one extreme to the each other. <br>

I was having a light meal with a friend who owns what was a tractor dealership (brands being bought up left them with no tractor line) but runs a good size tractor garage still. <br>

He told me of 21,000 hours on a combine, 10,000 plus or more hours on tractor and more than one brand with never a major repair on them. <br>
<br>
I am asking what kind of hours have you seen with what brand of tractor and even model if you think that matters and the care it received. <br>

I expect there to be differences here again for many reasons. I spend about as much time with service as I do using mine so they will rust out before they wear out. Not to impressed with the rust I am seeing on the seams of my Kubota tractor sheet metal.

The model got my attention. Did now know there was a 681 but it seems to been Fords top in options. Man two reverse speed and two pto speeds?

My wife's family had a 601 new in 1962 which is still in the family but not around me any longer. The 601 ran gear oil in the transmission and rear end which was also the lift if not BADLY mistaken. However the 681 uses M2C41. If the lift on the 681 is the same as on the 601 it had its issues but normally was the "hiccups" as it will set there with small jumps even while at idle. Some much an issue where and used so much to cultivate tobacco and other crops a local company develop slides for the cultivators to ride on and not to depend on the tractor lift. Best my memory is the lift rebuild is not major. But do as suggested check the fluid for water and also the wrong type of oil in it. I really enjoyed the 601 and it was great to use till a grandson backed it over a drop off and flipped it breaking the steering column. From then on steering was not near as good. Now your tractor is suppose to have wet brakes, the 601 had dry brakes which were about as weak as could be. One issue if the age I think it is, not many mechanics around who really worked on it. kt

Handiman, I have no problem with you sharing your concerns and issues with Case, just in reality don't think you will find the support and open doors you hope to. With the police you are dealing with elected people and with private industry the stock holder is who elects them. I am very aware that the cost of lawsuits is one big part of any big business. Even for a repair shop is why so many business have liability insurance. And yes some law suits are valid.

I think you have had some sharp minds trying to help you and here is one old one chiming in also. Have not had a small Honda gas engine so no idea how the choke system on it works, but by chance does it have like a two stage choke? By that I mean a full choke for when first cranking the engine and then partly open choke for the first few seconds of run when you do get it running? If so that may be your problem. I have Stihl and Husky engines with this set up and if you were to leave them on full choke they would run like you are talking about.
Then one other thought as this is pressure washer I understand, does the water pump side have a switch to detect if no water flow to cut the engine off to save the pump?
Also it would fit what you had to happen with running out of gas and refill and then this problem with new gas: are you sure it is really gas? Not being smart but I had about same issue and somehow there was diesel fuel in mine gas. The other thought that comes to my mind is there was a piece of trash in the new gas and it is takes about 15 seconds for it to be sucked in place to cut off the fuel on the outlet.

Reminds me of bucket pin on my mini Volvo. Pin broke and was able to drive out the broken pin but the damaged bushings had to be ground out with carbide bits. Were suppose to be able to drive them out also.
Only thing I can say is very fine steel surfaces that are joined for a while to another fine steel surface they seem to join. Not sure what it is called but it almost seems like the steel is a living item.

Then having worked for major heavy equipment manufacture for a few years it could be the pin was really over size or the bushings undersize of they did not line up as they should have and as we said "if it does not fit, get a bigger hammer" and I honestly saw some shafts there was no way to remove once they were driven in. When we saw such it was normally due to the two bushings not being in perfect alignment but they really do not want any slack in the none rotating part of the shafts either.

I am assuming it is suppose to cut off when you raised off the seat. It sounds like you have a safety switch issue. You may have a control that is not fully in neutral or somehow it has gotten bumped and not lined up as it should be.

Do all your steps to crank it and with key held to crank work each lever or safety switch slowly to see if a slight wiggle finds the issue.

I use to work for a large (at least then) heavy equipment manufacturer and we used a lot of hydraulic cylinders. It has been about 30 years and a lot has changed but does Case make their cylinders? Since they have been bought have they changed their cylinders to what is on New Holland. I have been told and no way do I know if true or not, now only the color is different now between the two.

My guess is you are looking at a common design at least "here". "Here" is important for I think a lot of that type of metal is formed somewhat locally from roll much like they do gutters now as they will make it to the length you want. I know on my barn the metal came from two different sources but I bought from same dealer and they matched perfectly.

Something that ought to come into the thought to buy anything that will require repairs is not only who can repair it but parts long term and for a tractor long term can be 40 years easy. I am not sure how well any brand supports parts for that period of time but there are many 40 year old plus tractors out there still being used on some basis. My brother in law has a 53 year old Ford for example and as of last year he was still using it for some disking and rough cutting of a field.

On a side note, was talking with a power equipment dealer who was a large wood burning stove dealer. We see very little used here now due to EPA rules on stoves. Said very hard to meet those requirements.

Based upon limited experience it sounds like you have air being sucked into your hyd system. Only have had limited experience with this and the tractor it was on the fluid would foam up as run as the air was mixed in it but it had more hyd power upon start up compared to after running for the air I guess floated out of the oil.

Look for a sign of leak on the hyd system.

First it has been a week so you may have this solved and second I may not be any help, but hope so.

Normally you would shift PTO lever just like great shift with clutch depressed and not all the way out. No idea what type of PTO clutch this tractor has but most likely there is either a simple shift button or short lever if hyd or electric shift and you use the clutch peddle if manual clutch is what used.

If you are not sure which then look around the lift levers for a short lever for the PTO and if nothing there then with the tractor off work the clutch pedal very slowly releasing it from fully depressed. If manual normally maybe an inch or so of pedal travel engages the PRT clutch and you usually can feel it every so slightly if you are paying attention. You should be able to shift the PRT without ever fully disengaging the travel gears.

As to the pto cutting of if the lift is raised to a certain point "I" have not heard of that before. While in some ways it is easy to think that would be a good idea for such as a cutter but at same time when using a PTO pump and pull sprayer my lift is always fully raised and I have my pto running and would find it strange not to do so on any tractor for same reason, running a pump for sprayer if nothing else.

Youngen! Why when I was that young could climb two trees jumping back and forth between them. Wait maybe that was the monkeys tossing me between them. Oh well about same just little difference there.

It has been years since I put on set of spurs and climbed a tree, some what enjoyed the little I have done. Would not want to have to drop in sections as you talked about. Got good at tossing a light weight and strong string over a major limb and then pulling up usually a cable to wrap around the tree for pull from say 20 feet to even 30 feet height. Only had one that did not go great and that one proved the need for a heavier tow vehicle than a compact pickup with 2 wheel drive! Tree dragged it like wet doll baby.

Not sure if the 8 years difference is the more major issue or the 80 pounds as to climbing a tree. Be safe and send more pictures. kt

No brand has all the best points even if built by another brand or it builds the other brand. Years ago worked for a retailer and we sold a brand that built (not heavy equipment) the same line of product for a major retailer to higher specs than their own label.

LS is not in my part of the world. I have heard of enough problems getting parts for what were very popular local labels to be gun shy on such any longer. As I say, there is a reason the name brands are name brands. Parts and service is one big reason regardless of the product or industry.

Before I would buy a brand of heavy equipment would look at the nearest dealership and think was I pleased with them. If yes now what if they closed, where is the next line of dealerships? Visit at least one of them. Parts counter people can be good sources of advice. If you can buy one lunch. Just ask about ability to get parts, what kind of time table and so forth. Or just stand back and listen to the other customers at the parts counter. Also listen if their parts people are helpful or not. One day you will need it. kt Hey if NH is built by LS their parts people know it, ask about any problems getting those parts and are the parts interchangeable across the labels. They may not know that but probably do. Again, from what I found they were only credited with the Boomer model line and not sure if all of it. No idea how good that line was. The local NH dealership was heavy into commercial and has been hurt.

Suggestions you have been given are good.
Be sure on those brands you can get parts. Farm Pro here is hard to get parts for or was recently. Don't just ask the brand but also the model number as all models of tractors are not USA models and therefore parts can be issue even for a name brand tractor.

On cutting grass, Murf is correct on using rear mower and even tires tearing grass at least under the right situation. I have used a much larger tractor with ag tires with good success on my yard, when dry. I have used a compact with loader tires when wet with better success than even pro mower with turf tires but let me add that is zero turn mower and when ground is wet hard not to tear the grass when turning with those mowers. If you have decent ground, stay off when ground is wet, ag tires with slow wide turns will probably be fine, well at least are for me.

One issue not sure has been address is what is in your garden? If you will want to use the tractor to cultivate the planted garden then tractor clearance will be a big issue. Sitting on flat ground measure the clearance and then subtract how high of rows you will have by the time you plow them say twice. Now your plants must be in the difference left. Lets say the tractor is 14 inches clearance, your row height is say 4 inches your plants have 10 inches of clearance. Some plants will bend a good bit and could even be 18 inches high but other corps will break off before bending so you have the firm 10 inches. Also a 4 inch bed is a very small bed if you use the tractor to cultivate, each time you do the bed gets higher (or does with most plowing) and the middle where the tires run get lower as dirt is moved to the plants.

I think you need to look at what you need for each job, rule out those you can not easy get parts for, then select the best combo. Do not overlook what Murf said about mowing on slopes if you have slopes, the higher the tractor and you on slopes the less safe you are.

Hey on tractors, be sure you can get the attachments for the size tractor you are considering before you buy. I would stay with Cat One for my lift and you want a lift that is not all the way up or down for the garden.

Surprised no one has helped here already that knows Belarus which I do not but, is it possible the clutch plate has stuck or rusted to the flywheel over the winter?

You might do well to search here for that topic for their is discussion on how to break it lose. Think it goes from having tractor in gear and just rocking it (with it off) to pulling it up to a large tree (one you will not damage or the tractor) crank it in gear and hold the clutch peddle down see it will break lose. Now you study this idea before you do, I would not go running into a tree at any speed.

oldguy thank you very much. I do like your drawing and can understand it very well.

I spent a good bit of time tracking down and talking with a company who jacks up slabs and he did not suggest I do it on what I needed raised. He had at least two concerns and I will give your method a try if redoing a drain does not solve it which will cost less and not look odd as the raised slab would. He uses an expanding foam at about 1600 PSI that they inject through holes in the slab also but the foam does the lifting not as much by the 1600 PSI as the foam expands as it dries and that does the lifting. He said the problem for him is as much as I want to raise it, get it on right slope for the size of the slab with be tricky as when he injects the foam and it fully expands he is not able to add more if it needs to be lifted higher and for the size of the slab he thinks it would crack when he begins to jack it asking one corner to support the full size of that lift till more is supported.
You know as I typed that I now wonder how correct he was, makes me think he did not want the job. Maybe bigger than he likes to do for think sidewalks was he big preference.

Here we have the herbicide in liquid form. Guess there is liquid fertilizer (well I know there is) if you want to avoid the dust but if you are getting that much dust out there you are beating the fertilizer to death. If you used a powder can you not water it in at least enough to help it dissolve? I doubt you would be applying it enough to cause you or your dog an issue unless you really beating it to dust or doing much more than your yard. Of course there are dust mask, probably for the dog also. LOL

Of course there is cow manure if you want to go that way with the fertilizer which is natural.
