I would check to see if both blades are free to spin, check all bolts are tight including the stump pan (think that model has one).

I would check the switch and see if one of the two terminals is "hot" when the switch is in one position and then not when the switch is, switch and the other terminal is now hot. If so I would think the orange wire is the second speed. If not sure I would probably test one lead at the time with power to the red and then the orange by bumping the wire and then lightly touching them to hot wire. I would not try with the switch as you might possibly damage the switch if not wired as I would think.

My father in law told me years ago it is hard to work with just one tractor. Even if the second one is smaller or older or simpler, a backup is hard to beat. Hope all works for you.

It is possible to have a floating piece of trash in the fuel tank that gets sucked over the fuel outlet as fuel is being used and it can partly block or fully block the outlet. If your fuel tank is of design you can look in it by only removing the fuel cap when it looses power take flash light (not a match as a person who did sell tractors did here recently and yes he got burnt) and look for trash at the outlet. It took me a while to find the wasp in mine. Not sure if he flew in while open fueling or was in hose nozzle.

That sure is a neat idea.

There are some uses of the 1000 RPM with USA equipment. I have only seen it on tractors of say 100 hp up. The shaft is different than the 540 in size and number of splines.

Have no hills here but trying to think on ours it probably operates about the same. There does seem to be engine speeds where it does not change travel speed as much as engine speed does. The load on the machine either due to weight or ground will affect it quickly.

It is amazing to me how many questions there are on Gators. I wonder why that is. In thinking on this I guess our has given us as much question asking as bigger machines or more complicated ones.

auerbach, Not sure if you are aware but if you look at the top of the discussion it shows the forum the post is under. As in this case "Cat" but that does not give a type of "Cat". Sometimes that helps me.

I can not explain the why nor think of the model of Gator we have but it is about 6 year old 7 hp gas. I found it to be very touchy if allowed to sit for a period of time probably at least two months. It runs terrible and often as you say only with choke partly pulled. Have learned when it does like that add fresh fuel (carb cleaner may help) and run - run - run it. Guess what ever the restiction is fresh gas running over it cleans it.

Simple to solve, use the Gator every month and since doing that no problem I can remember.

JD Gator will not idle unless choke is partially out

So this is the land the cattle were feeding on. Had missed your pictures until today. Think I looked at all and enjoyed. But on the picture about the David Brown did not see a tractor, is that you or a person named David Brown?

General thoughts:
Have you tried luberication on all points of linkage and where it enters the transmission? Have you tried with the tractor off rotating the pto shaft by hand backwards to see if that would help?

This is only general. Doubt you would be able to see hyd oil looking in fill port.
Look for a dip stick. Look under the seat. It also could be a sight guage which I would think would be on side of transmission. Doubt it would be a plug to remove.
Where to drain it from, should be able to find a plug on the bottom or bottom of the side for that.
No idea on what type of oil it uses.

I suspect it had enough water or gel in it to clog your filter. If it is a clear bowl try removing it and draining. Pay attention to what is in the bowl such as water or gel. Should have a good flow and clean fuel with filter removed. If you can not tell run some in a clear glass (or on flat metal surface works fine) if possible and give it a few moments and the water will bead. If the fluid is clean suspect air. It is possible it has air in the system and you need to bleed it.

If you don't use a stablizer in your diesel fuel you ought to.

If a hydro trans did you check fluid?

Did you check all levers to be sure all were engaged as auerbach is asking? Still have clutch pressure when you depress the pedal?
