My MF 5435 intermittently will not go forward or back. It has hydraulic transmission with power shuttle shift. There are power shuttle indicator lights on the dash, red on left over the reverse arrow, and green on right on the forward arrow. When the tranismission will not engage there is a sequence of flashes on the red light. It lights up twice, then pauses, then lights four times, then pauses, and then it flashes rapidly. My dealer hasn't been able to get hold of anyone at MF to find out what the code means. I suspect that hydraulic fluid is either overheating or getting clogged somewhere, but we've changed the fluid and all filters. Ideas?

You could ask the dealer to let you look at his service manual. The code (if that's what it is) is sure to be in there. Or you could be more persistent than the dealer in contacting a head-office technician. ....

Just wondering if your dealer is a Massey dealer? If not I might understand but if so...I would wonder what the problem is and not with the tractor.

Have you tried to reach Massey yourself? ....

They are a MF dealer, but don't carry many MF tractors. I got this one used from them and they didn't have the shop manual.

The dealer finally did get an answer on the code and was told that it meant that there was a bad switch on the clutch. I changed two switches on the clutch and it didn't solve the problem.

Then a different warning light came on and then went off that said that the transmission fluid filter was being blocked. I had changed two hydraulic filters, but not the one that goes to the hydraulic power shuttle shift. The filter came yesterday and I'm pretty sure it was the source of the problem. We'll see. Fortunately, I had just bought a 31 year old MF 275 and it got all our hay in while the fancy MF5435 was complaining about the work. ....

My father in law told me years ago it is hard to work with just one tractor. Even if the second one is smaller or older or simpler, a backup is hard to beat. Hope all works for you. ....

I always buy or get included when I buy a piece of equipment; The Service Manual. The $40 or so isn't much compared to the price of the equipment and can answer many of your questions without a trip to the dealer and has pictures to boot. Ron
