Eric I have a cousin named Eric he's 6'1" and goes 460# he fits on my 4400 fine. Granted it's tight but all compacts are tight for him.

I'm not gonna say to much on hydro vs gear. I like gears. So you decide whats right for you.

I have turfs on mine and use it in the woods all the time. BUT it is always chained on all 4. My old compact had R-1s and it was chained on all 4 to go into the woods. A little tire slippage is the woods is very hard on tires they get sliced real bad no matter what style tire you have.

The big pros with the big skidders use really heavy chains all the time except when the ground is very dry.

I can not comment on mail order tractors. I want to be near the dealer in case I wanna reach across the counter and grab him by the throat to explain the facts of life. I think the service is better because I bought it locally.

John it already has grass growing. I'd mow it to 3-4" and overseed with the other mixtures you want. Then mow it and the regular grass will come.<br>

You'll probably have to pick out big rocks. The frost has a way of pushing rocks up every year.<br>

Sounds like my kind of a yard, no fuss. You may wanna get a soil ph taken and you'll proably need some lime to get it were grasses grow better then weeds. But there is no hurry to do that Mother Nature has been taking care of the land for a long time and it will be fine.

I'd really look at the 72" MMM and like Graig says the 4wd is a real good thing to have, even if you do not use it but a couple of times a year.

Hydro some people can not operate with out that feature. Me I have no use for it. I like gears and clutches. (basically because I understand them and how they work)

Others like the varaiable speed selection and the ease of use, cruise control etc.

dedeye you ask an awful lot in one little post.

I'm not sure about your priorities but me thinks the "to make things worse ..." is where I'd begin. My buddies wife finially had enough of the toys and her car sitting out. Her car is inside again. His big red toy is in and his truck is in the snowbank. But she did explain the facts of life and something about a livin hell...

First I guess I'd look at snow removal because blade can also be used to move dirt. But maybe your wife is the forgiving type and will also shovel the driveway.

Box blades can work for snow and work great for dirt. My first scraper was a 4' box scraper bought used from a rental place less than half of a new one.

Second was a brush hog type cutter.

I've had small tractors for over 15 years b4 I got a backhoe. So I have most all of the attachments I have needed. I can think of some stuff I want for brush but I guess I'll stick with pushing it up in a pile in the hedgerow.

We just had a dealer open in Niles, just south of Auburn, NY. They have scads of little Red tractors and a whole lot of vermeer stuff and some others.

So the parent companies explains the diverse lines of equipment there.

Barnee Whats your house level compared to the road? If you need fill and it won't make your house a low spot ask the towns to put their ditch fill in your yard. Its lots cheaper then buying.

Did they give you an estimate of time? $1200 seems a little steep but you're dealing with parts. I'd hope that includes flywheel, disk/s, pilot bearing, disk and throwout. I've bought parts for my old 1500 Ford and they about put me over the edge.

Art will probably weight in on this and he can give you the real "skinny" on this issue.

Depending on how bad it is maybe you can just get away with a new disk. Then trade tractor...

The other comment I had, TomG touched, is get rid of any grade5 bolts for shear pins grade 2 is more than enough and they are a whole lot cheaper than internal drive line damages, broken gearboxes, twisted shafts and all other stuff that can happen when the shearbolt does not shear.

cj I am thinking your use and mine are similar. I have a 4400 sycro reverser. The tractor is quite small for any serious woods work. I burn 15 or so face cords a year and use mine in the woods but have to tone down my expectations quite a bit. I have an old Farmall M I use for heavier grunt work if I really have to. The sheet metal is really straight so I am very careful with it. I try and barter for my fire wood all cut and split as much as possible. But I do cut a fair amount.

I would not use anything any smaller than a 4300 and I would weight it down. I use chains almost always in the woods. It does not matter what you use for tires skidding is too rough on tires w/o chains.

I have no problems with my std shift arrangement for loader work it actually works a lot like a regular construction loader except the throttle stays set on the tractor. Use the left pedal in loader to disengage the drive to use throttle for hyd on bucket etc. Use the clutch to cng direction and creep up to dump with tractor...

The hydro I'd probably screw up because of real equipment use ie: leaning on throttle to add some power for breakout. Hydro you have to let up to add power...and throttle still set...

Just spent a week in a 300 cat excavator and on a D8 it spoils me when I go back to "baby" toys. But I get a lot of projects accomplished with my little toys here I just can not be in any kind of a hurry.

The front axle will not be an issuse for you with your use. But there is a bushing or 2 in the finials and transmission you really need to watch for. Test drive tractor get it warm use the "C" range and 4th gear and head down a hill and decelerate and listen for a banging, it will sound like pinion gears slipping on the ring gear. Stay away from it unless JD will upgrade it for you NO CHARGE!

Mark What kind of a transfer switch system did you get?

I am fussing about one for the complete house or get one that has a seperate panel and just put the house wiring into that that I want for PTO use.

I am leaning very much in favor of the whole house concept. But have not ruled out back wiring and just turning off main breaker.

How much stump did you leave? If you left enough and have a 3ph attachment like a box scraper that has a cutter on both sides should do it. I usually back up against get a good bite and continue to back as I raise the 3ph. Then let go and back over it and do that fwd raising as I pull then use bucket to finish off.

Locust stumps will last a long time. I am just guessing here because of soils but would suspect 6" is proably a little more than a small compact would want to deal with. THAT Said: it is dooable.

How long of a hill? Is the rope going to be a continous loop?

Back in the olden days, and some places still, a tractor had a spare rim bolted on the right side and a long continous rope with a long splice was used by looping it around the rim 2X. A batter board was used to make sure no one got around it or thru it.

If this arangement you are trying to do is only going to be used a few times a year this would not be practical.

How about an old wagon and make a trail up?

Tractor supply does have pto driven fence rollers you might wanna look at those for a quicker idea. But if you do something like that make sure you have a good batter board set up.

I've road up many a hill on a rope tow, rope tows are still used in many ski areas yet.

It does take a very stout 1.5" and expensive rope to get 300 feet or more up a hill.

As I think about this some more depending on what you have to work with. You could get an old truck diffrential a short dirve shaft hooked thru an old transmission and put your tractor on that with the pto.

I look at the side hill by me all the time. Its steep and lots of trees a good place to play all day.

Rope is way to expensive!!!!!!

I use a 72" LP side discharge. Mowing around trees is really no big problem. Usually I'll mow toward the tree and turn away so the rear mower swings under the branches.

Also trimming you can back under things. You can also back the mower over ditches to trim them.

With the side discharge you can block othe discharge chute and use it for mulching.

Biggest problem with tarping out side is moisture. Make sure air can move around and under the tarp.

Loosening the clutch slip system is a good idea as long as you have the right torque specs when you adjust in the spring.

Maybe better just to pull that assembly off and store that indoors.

Lots of talk in years past about blocking clutch pedals for storage. Personally I've never seen it done.

HOOKIE COW MURF I never thought about a ski-goat on the beach otherwise your post sounds much like I'd have wrote except I do not go south at all any more.

Funny spending 3 years in Honolulu and those folks have NO IDEA about how easy it is to drive a couple of hours to go shopping or get something to eat. I've done SE Asia, Korea, Alaska, and lots of other places, spent many years away from home and snow. But I will admit Virginia Beach does have a place in my heart during the summer;-) Just leave me in Upstate NY for all winters.

I like the snow and have at least 4 pr of alpine skis at most times. No ski-goats. But many of the other LETS GO PLAY IN THE SNOW TOYS.

I hope we get a foot+ each week. and lots of "0" F temps.

Happy blowin, pushin and plowin...Nothin beats a good blow job... on your driveway ;-)

The ROCK IS TOO BIG IF YOU CAN NOT MOVE IT! You will be very suprised at how big a rock you can move if you use some thought as you go about it.

I had found a BIG MUTHUR up in back of boys house in the woods. Only about 8-10" sticking out of ground and then over 3' dia. I used box scraper to dig around it and tried to no avail to move it out of its resting place. I had to get my old Farmall M and pick up one side just enought with little JD to get a chain started uder it. Between the 2 tractors we got it out. I could just barely budge it with JD. We trused it up in chains and pulled with M and pushed with JD and Got it to the house .5 mi. It now rests in the front of the house set up on its side/end.

The litte JD would move it ok on hard ground with box blade and getting some weight onto tractor to position it.

The estate thing is kinda funny. I've told my boys they'll have to divide up toys cause I'm not leaving any money.

I am my own worse enemy I will part with a buck in a heartbeat if it is something that we need and it carries its own weight. But if it's something I want but don't really need, oh boy here I go...

AC5Z0 has a couple of excellent points, as well as others. The smart thing is seperate units. PTO gen 20+kw and look for a good line stick welder that will support mig if I ever get around to that option.

That is the nice thing about this media different unattached thoughts on how to skin a cat.

The embroidery thing is a very good self supporting hobbie at this point. It pays for its self and gets us to Atlantic City once a year.

The real benny is I can do almost anything I want for designs, I NEVER THOUGHT I'D SEE THE DAY I HAD TOO MANY HATS... but it has happened.

I'll let you know how it turns out in a week or so my waiting and cooling period.

Is the 99 thru a dealer? JD has several product improvement packages (PIP). Take the serial # to JD and see what has been updated on this tractor and will they do the PIP's for you if they have not been done.

Loader is ganna vary. Does it already have the loader valve? If so look at around $3000 for green. Add $600-800 if no valve.
