After all of the discussion I will go back to my original thought. NOVICES AND SLOPES/GRADES do not mix.

YUP! Learning to operate equipment it is not rocket sicence but mistakes are usually final. We never put beginners near water, power lines, embankments and trenching operations.

You can read about safety and operation and study it all you want; but until you actually do it... Like riding a bike, sex... well this is probably heading the wrong way now...

kwschumm if you are un sure... BACK THE MOWER STRAIGHT UP THE GRADE/FALL LINE. Fall line = take a basketball and roll it down the slope. Follow that line to mow in reverse.

Keep it in FWD if the tractor will not push the mower backwards up the slope the slope is probably to steep to try and drive up.

AND DO NOT EVER BELIEVE ANYONE THAT SAYS A TRACTOR WITH 3PH WILL NOT GO OVER BACKWARDS!

You are asking questions and that is good.

Cutter if tractor supply does not have them or is not open today, the best bet is a good ag tire dealer that repairs tires. They will have quality ones on the shelf.<br>

If as Peters said; you can buy the complete kit and just take the top half.<br>

When I got my old M they were completely rotted out. Two new ones fixed problem. I robbed mine off the complete valve stem repair assembly from new parts. I had lots of problems with flats on 2 different jobs and managed to rip out a stem 2X.<br>

Me thinks still cheaper even if you can not find just the stem/valve assembly.<br>

The part # for the tractor tire valve is: TECH 6218 this is a complete patch to repair a ripped out stem. Have a box of 10 and only 3 stem patches used but have used 7 of the valve assemblys.<br>

I bought them directly from TECH in Layafette, NY.<br>

PS use never/anti seize on the new threads.<br>

Thank You homedad5acre. I was unfortunate enough to serve in combat 69-70 under leadership that dictated battles from the White house. I stayed in saw the changes being made and saw the results in 90-91.

You can not believe the pride that swells up with-in with the current administration and the service men and women serving.

These youngsters today are truley some of the best educated, best trained, most motivated and professional people our nation has ever sent into harms way.

Tom they are putting brakes on the "BIG" stuff. Almost all of the big liquid tanks are using them. Don't think I've seen balers with big wagons with them yet. The big square bales and big round bales seem to be taking over except for the small bales sold down state NYC area at the tracks.

On the side hills we used a shoe with a short chain and put it under the wagon tire and let it skid.

I still use this for brings large loads of fire wood out of the woods when I have to decend a fairly steep trail.

Plots as Murf mentioned I think you would be suprised at the willingness of a small farmer to help you out. Especially if you help him build some fence, true up his driveway (right up your alley :-)) worse case help him pick some stone out of his new seeding or just help unload hay wagons...

I've set on the sideline long enough. I fail to see how JD is responsible for any problems with this tractor. I did the math, 1450 hours divided by 85 per year makes tractor 17 years old. Of course I know I'm not smart enought to fix all of NASA's problems and make them a more stream lined operation. So my math could be off. BUT I am smart enought to know no one is gonna accept problems with a old tractor well out of warranty, by 15 years.

YUP as Peters said some dealers are bad and that goes across the colors. BUT none of them would accept this issue.

Morning Bill You have a good looking project. I've always liked the old Farmalls. I'd like an old JD "G" but those are a little out of my reach. I have a 1944 "M". I use it around here for grunt work skidding logs etc. The compact is handier to have and use but just does not have the weight to make things happen.

TL all of the grading has been hit. If you wanna see the most of the best oils look in a truck stop. The #1 seller is shell rotella. There are 2 others that are sold and some fleet owners have their own smaller brands. Don't buy your oil at a truck stop. Go to wally world or other discount auto parts store. My JD does not use any oil between changes am changing at 100 hr interval.

The synthetics are ok if you are using your equipment 40+ hours a week. Generally you should change the oil a couple of times a year even if you do not get the hours on it. Using a very expensive oil just to drain it with out the hours on it seems a waste to me.

There will be some that will say for what small amout of oil used the cost is not a problem. Then I would suggest just use the JD oil.

PeterH You can do it no problem.

1 remove the deck plate your feet rest on. I've found you can get a finget under the carriage bolt to remove and stick a piece of duct tape on it to hold it in place when you reinstall.

2 remove the 2- 1/2X8" bolts that hold the back plate on it has the little rubber bumpers on it.

3 You manifold fittings are exposed. seems like a 15/16 and a 1&1/8 open end are what you need.

Safety is always a good thing. I remember hanging off the side of a silo with just a few strands of baler twine for a rope. Would I do it today? I remember a lot of don't touch that, don't do that...

Seeing 1 armed farmers, 1 eyed mechanics, bent up equipment, recently a man killed from a windshield washer fluid barrel touched by a tourch and many other graffic stories showing results of accidents.

Maybe Dennis can make up a accident photo page, but then maybe gore gallery . com would want in...

Experience based on good sound practices and advice coupled with some good learning experiences by making some mistakes coupled with some luck will add some good genes to the gene pool tonight.

And remembering it can happen to me. Consider the risks and proceed accordingly based on experience.

Mark You did an excellent job of typing slowly. Had to chuckle about shrinking vertically... I do that to the wifes pic's shrink vertically ;-)!!! It keeps me in trouble...

I guess I'll have to shoot a couple for this project and see if pixeles reduced in camera is different than software reduction. I usually carry extra flash cards so I can shot on highest quality. I never know when that shot of something special will come.

I've been resizing and reducing pixels per sq inch with software. It seems the only way. Camera is also only changing pixels per sq inch.

I too only have tried to use free sites. Just log on with your e-mail address and you are a member. My in-box stays full of garbage from those folks that sell their address books to support their sites. Yahoo... I belong to some embroidery lists YUK! what a system. Pop up adds, If I use a blocker I'm blocked out, Forced adds in the middle of a topic. Forced adds between topics... I won't even go into the other free sites that have 6 pop-up windows before you can hit the stop button and go back 8 clicks...

The info on yahoo is important for our side business to keep current with industry and tweaks to commercial software. So we tolerate it.

This by far has been the easiest site to navigate on. Other changes Dennis made caused me some stress. But he has a good site and as others have said. This may have more than I need to know every day But if I have a concern about something a search of the data base makes member ship a very cheap tool vs a trucking bill or service call from dealer if I can resolve it myself.

I also use tractornet for my old M stuff and old tractor shows a lot of history there. Nothing quite like fooling with the old tractors. Wish I could afford a couple of old JD's. But I started out on Farmall's so I'm happy with the Red.

I would bet somewhere tractor net will have to charge for their service. As others have mentioned these sites are not cheap to operate and the time involved is tremendous. Some one has to support them.

Just a thought: with all of the cosmetic plastic on this stuff is there a panel there preventing the lever from moving fully? Any thing stuck in the linkage or interfearing below the lever?

Tom I've gone through it fairly well. The block prevents the dipper stick from getting to close to the boom. I'd like to grind some off the block but bucket curl would hit boom then. When I bring the dipper into the block now the cylinder will flex some (more than I'd like) but the circuit relief will pick it up. Works that way it the shop anyways. Would guess it could bend again if close to block at 1700-1800 rpm, where I operate at, and the valve is opened. Maybe it was just a fluke... who knows at this point...

It's, the valving, is where it's gonna stay. Had it out this afternoon to stress it on some pine stumps 25+inches 60 or so cm :-). I am happy with it. I forget it's not a big machine and tend to try and push it a little harder than I should.

I am a little gun shy yet. Still remember backwards JD system to standard systems. Have a little JD ingrained memory yet in the fingers yet or so it appears.

Seems strange to have that. On Caterpillar never even a consious thought about controls.

Anyways the hoe working good. On to the new wood shed project...

allisn How long was it on it's side or top? Oil from the crank case will run past the rings and fill the top of the cylinders. Either let it set a couple of days so oil drains back or pull ALL of your injectors turn engine over several times to blow oil out. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to be patient here. If one cylinder has any amount of oil left in it and engine starts on the other cylinders you most likely will break a connecting rod, crank or blow the head.

Not one to stir a well stirred pot... Oh well here's my $.02 worth. Out side water problems beat fairly well. BUT the humidy comment is probably the the most prevelant here in the Northeast I suspect other northern states as well.

During the summer the basement areas are cooler because of the ground around them however warm miost air inside the basement hits the walls and you have condensation. (iced drink in the summer sweating). If your mildew goes away in the winter heating season and retuns in the summer you can lay your bet to this problem. 2 story slab houses even have this to a smaller degree. Ask me how I know.

Moving air around with fans is the easiest and cheapest also dehumidifiers will work, if humidity is the problem.

The next dump (because I dump money in it), if I build one, will have piping in the floor and or in the concrete walls so warm water, not hot, can keep concrete above the dew point in side the house.

Jon a local welding shop should be able to fabricate those for you no problem at all. Take the parts that are left to them and describe what they should be.

Tom you bring up an excellent point about camps. Yep I agree 100% about the old barrels and single leach lines working fine at a camp. Now put a family of four or more on that year round. Here camps on the lakes either use a storage tank and pump it weekly or when it's required. Others have property way up above the lake and pump it there with as many as 2 or more pump stations to a septic system.

I take exception to your lack of concern about slope being very accurate. Slope angle is critical to insure proper drainage with out material moving to fast stirring the tank and moving sediment into the field. Cleaning a used field is not fun ask me how I know. Generally you have to totally rebuild it which if code people are involved want engineer stamped/approved plans. Do not even think of cutting a corner here in the Finger lakes watershed. Sand filters are a requirement and have to be maintained.

If you are doing it yourself do it right with the best information avaiable the first time. It saves headaches later. A well designed system properly installed will function for a very long time with only pump outs every 5-10 years depending on use and climate.

I assume you are saying the whole wheel will not turn? Moisture/water in the brake drum?

Or 1 wheel freezes and it only has water in the tire for ballast?
