I'm only guessing on this one, but I'd assume there is a pilot bearing in the flywheel for the front of the clutch shaft, I've heard of them going bad and causing the same effect. Long time ago in farm tractors the rage of the age was the six armed clutch disc with the little metalic spots that replaced the common fibre clutch disc. Seemed like some of them had problems with the little metalic discs becoming magnetized somehow, again same effect. Just another thought. Frank.

I stoped at a fleet type farm store the other day, they had a bunch of Farm King equipment stacked up in the parking lot so I took a little time to look the line over. I did'nt notice anything that looked cheap or weak about the items but either it had been stacked on the parking lot since Moby Dick was minnow or their paint is really bad. There were almost more rust blisters than paint, kinda turned me off. Frank.

With price increses in new equipment or most anything we purchae seeming to be running rampant, I think I'd buy all the tractor you anticipate needing now and take good care of it. I know I'm glad I bought when I did as the same or like models are a bunch higher than a two or three years ago and really don't offer many more features that I'd pay a lot extra for. Just my thoughts. Frank.

Les: probably the Curtis Cab Co. is the best place to start for a cab, I'm sure they have a website somewhere. Far sa a backhoe I doubt anyone makes a frame mount unit, but The Woods Co., Land Pride and several others make 3 pt. hitch hoes. Is your 2030 a utility type ot row crop tractor? In some cases a cab and a hoe attachment might not be compatable for clearance resons, I hope others on the board can help me out there. Best of luck. Frank.

I had nearly an identical situation a couple years ago on an item not related to tractors or equipment, and again the deal was signed and a delivery date was pending. A call from the dealer said he could'nt honor the deal unless I would agree to a 3 and a half percent price rise on a 75,000.00 deal. I took no action against the dealer, I just went elsewhere, but he got his just reward. In six months the place was closed. Frank.

Mike1819: I had a 4300 before I got the 4310. The joystick on the ten series is shaped different and in a more natural position. Perhaps a ten series lever would fit your 4700 and be more comfortable. Check with a Deere dealer, I'll bet they'll interchange. Enjoy your day. Frank.

J. P.: Check the shift lever linkage between the lever and tne transmission. There could be something blocking it or it is out of adjustment not allowing the gear to be fully engaged. Poping out of gear especially under load could do major damage to the tranny, I'd get that checked soon. Frank.

AV8R: Your point is well taken. In any type of business whether selling tractors or bed springs there are certian dealers who allways sem to excell over others. Seems like the ones who are allways in a a slower more steady growth pattern that develop good customer relations, get the service work and the repeat sale allways win out over the complacent never change anything sector or the flash bang can't expand big and fast enough mega dealerships. I guess I'm fortunate to live in an aeria where most dealers are in the second class I described. Enjoy your day. Frank.

I know of several folks in our aeria who make a decent second income by raising vegetables on a few acres then selling them in the local farmers markets during season. My wife makes it a point to be there when they open as fresh vegies, home made pies, etc. seem to sell out real fast. It's a lot of hard work, but probably the best return on the dollar invested, compared to any livestock enterprise, such as Emus, Alpacas, etc.. I'm sure quite a large startup investment is needed and like any kind of livestock the market can go your way or aganst you and either make or break your venture. Others may have better ideas too, but in any case good luck in your new enterprise. Frank.

Troy; Oil really doesn't break down, it becomes contaminated. I normaly never run my compacts beyond 50 hrs. for routine oil changes because they get lots of short run use that never fully warms the engines up to evaporate the water out of the oil. I do the same for the transmission fluid, only I go roughly a hundred hours for the same contamination reason. I might be a little freaky on throwing away oil so soon but my theory is that oil and filters are free compared to parts and service costs. I'm also a firm believer in using the brand of oil and filters sold by the manufacturer of the tractor whether it be Green, Blue, Orange or whatever brand tractor you happen to own. Have a great day. TomRoberts: I know it's something I'm doing wrong as I'm not the most computer literate fellow on the block, but I wasn't able to make your pictures come up. One of the boys will be by the house later and he'll know how to make it work. I don't know if you were asking about my Land Pride quick coupler or someone elses, but here goes. Quick hitches aren't perfect, but there a far cry from lining up pins in 3 pt. arms. It helps a lot to be on a level surface. Usually when changing from one impliment to another the top link of the 3 pt. will have to be adjusted either longer or shorter not only for hitching up but to level the tool for proper field operation later. I don't have one but there are hydraulic top links available that would likely make it even more convenient. After you've did it a few times it becomes pretty routine. Far as PTO shaft length, so far I've not had anything that was too short. This part has been hashed a few times before about quick hitch brands, but I bought Land Pride because of their adjustable upper hook. As cat.1 3pt. hitches were being developed nobody seemed to set a standard as to the distance between the axis of the lower pins to the axis of the top link pin, so an adjustable top hook comes in handy for that. I'm sure other brands offer that feature as well. Far as play in the hitch system because of the extra hitch points being involved, the is bound to be some, but not enough that it's a big deal. Mike1819: I don't keep up too well on prices, but that doesn't seem bad at all. With 360 hrs. you should have many years of service left in the 4700. I'm not sure how Deere breaks down the frame sizes in their in the compact series now that the 20 series has came along, but your 4700 would be the large frame tractor, from the 4400 down were mid frame and I don't remember where they went to small frame. Last time I checked a well equiped 4410 was over 20K list and you have lots more tractor than a 4410. I think you did fine especialy with the loader included. Frank.

I've heard the Blackhawk brand name for quite a few things, but don't know of a Blackhawk Backhoe Co. Waterloo Iowa is in Blackhawk county, and Waterloo being quite an industrual city it's possible that they could have been made there as there are quite a few companys in Waterloo called Blackhawk this or that. Perhaps a call to the Waterloo chamber of commerce would get you somewhere. Hopefully someone on the board will know the company you're loking for, but if not this might be a place to start. Cheif is correct, they are different size engines. I too noticed the displacement figures is some past Deere ad literature, but my 4000 series tech manual gives the correct numbers. Frank.

Mike1819: I'm not sure if Deere uses the same 4 in 1 bucket for a 460 loader as they sell for the 430's, possibly it's a heavier bucket for your machine. One 3 in. diamater tree 15 ft. tall with a root ball the size of a bushel basket is about the limit on my 4310 and 430 loader, but I can gather and pick up five or six one inch trees at a time. It takes a little practice to gather and grab, but you'll get the hang of it. I try to spend a few days every spring or late fall after harvest using the 4310 W/48 hoe and the 4 in 1 taking saplings out of the fence rows before they become big chain saw type trees. Some how a chain saw used to be kind of a fun thing to operate, but becoming "Mature", not "Old", has given me a different view of chain saws. Hope this helps. Frank.

Spend the 17,000. on the tractor and the same day spend twice that much on a new pickup. Take good care of both of them, keep them both five years then check the resale value. I drive bare bones pickups, a real nice one would be great, but WOW talk about depreciation. Just a little different view on the subject. Frank.

Pulling logs is risky business with any tractor, so go slow and be real alert. Your 4310 will pull the 12 inchers, but a anything much bigger will overwhelm a tractor that size. If you know someone with a heavy duty winch on a tow truck would seem like a much safer method to move those big ones. Frank.

Broken: I think I'll steer clear of the gender thing on hydros vs. gear being more for one gender than the other. My wife loves her 345 Deere hydro lawn tractors, she must she's got two of them. But on the other hand a good many years ago she spent many hours on "H" Farmslls and a "4010" Deere pulling a four bottom plow and both of them were far from hydros. The point being that most anybody can adapt to what they are given to operate if they have the desire to learn. Hydros have a definite place in lots of equipment, but I've never felt they earned their keep in a compact, just an expensive option that I don't need. For the last time I'll shut up om the subject. Yes, they are worth rebuilding. As was said seal kits are easily obtainable and real cheap compared to a new one. I've had scored cylinder shafts repaired with some sort of epoxy that has held up very well. I've had bent cylinder shafts in the past that pretty well means more parts expense than a new cylinder in most cases. Frank.
