Grasgod; If we're thinking of the same thing, then around here they're called "Sand Points". I've never helped install one but I know that lots of them were put in our little hometown years ago and most are still being used. We've never had a municipal water system, but have a sewer system now. I don't think you can replace one that's gone bad anymore because of health laws, all new wells have to be drilled and have a steel or now plastic casing. If I recall correctly my inlaws well in town had a sand point that was only about 20 ft. deep, but there subsoil was pure sand and about 300 ft. from the river. Our house is about a mile further away from the same river and we had to drill almost 600 ft. for enough flow. So back to your question, I'd be sure to check county code first. If the code is ok and you have a sand subsoil it probably will work. I really don't recall what type of pump the inlaws had, but they allways seemed to have enough water. Beagle; If my memory serves me correct I recall that a yard of soil, depening on soil type, moisture content, etc., weighs around 3000 lbs. That could mean 120 loads thats a lot of trips. This summer at the farmstead we did some major landscaping, I moved and leveled 20 tandems of fill lime, crushed rock etc. roughly 180- 190 yd. with the 4410 and 430 loader over a course of a couple weeks of 1 - 2 hour spirts. some had to be moved 20 ft. some 250 ft. My point being that if you're not moving the soil great distances that FEL may be just as quick as loading a trailer, dumping it then leveling the soil. Just a thought. Frank.

Art; After I wrote the post the thought you bring up came to mind. I guess I was only thinking of my own situation with gravel drives. In the real world with R-4's in snow I've never got in a situation where with a bucket of snow that the front wheels would'nt push me out of where I was in, or that by dumping the bucket of snow that the loader bucket would'nt push me out. I've never owned a set of chains for a CUT, but I do have a set for a regular size farm tractor chains that have been rusting in the corner of a shed somewher for 20 years. Frank.

Cherymax; No offense taken about the Land Pride tillers. I now understand your needs for a tiller are entirely different from mine. My need is to tear up soil for landscape reasons in a hurry, yours to create a fine seed bed for flowers. I've mostly parked it for the season and went back to the box scraper being the soil is super dry right now. Even with a machine that big, rocks as small as a golf ball make it jump and bang all over the place since the dry soil has no give to it. Frank.

I think things were gotten away with and probably still are that would shock most honest people. I could, (but absolutely won't) show you an apartment building and a house in two differnt parts of our county that were built on top of filled in garbage dumps in late 60's. To my knowledge both are still standing. I watched as both were done and could'nt imagine how building permits were issued for either. Strange things happen. Some day not "if but when" all of this comes to light who pays? Likely the owner will be the loser, or the Government. Who is the Government? Us, so we all share the burden of things that were "Goten away with" in the past. Enough from me. Frank.

Billy; Tom's right, call the DNR before doing anything to try to "Help" the bird. I know a fellow who thought he was doing the "Right Thing" by putting an injured animal out of it's misery. Turned out he killed something that was protected and almost had to pay a nifty fine. Finnaly the DNR agreed he did the "Right Thing" and droped it. I don't know what the bird is either, I'm sure a hawk of some sort. Frank.

DeTwang; Thermal Dynamics I've heard of, Hobart has been around for years, but don't know a lot about either. I started out to buy a Miller Plasma cutter, the local dealer was a jerk. I came in dressed in work clothes grease and all, he could'nt seem to get me out of there quick enough. I drove across town to the Lincoln / Hypertherm dealer, he took a new unit, hooked it up, gave me a few basic instructions and told me to go to it. I bought the hypertherm 1000 on the spot. It's been a good reliable machine. I guess I'll just preach my old sermon on dealers that most who know me probably are tired of hearing by now, but here goes. I'm quite sure that all brands mentioned with proper care will last you a lifetime, so in my book a good dealer who is interested in having a happy repeat customers is much more important than the brand of the machine. I've ordered things from Harbor Freight several times, sometimes I was satisfied with what I got from them, but most things I was dissapointed with. Enough of my yammer. Frank.

Cub125; You mention you were mowing brush, perhaps you've checked this, but look under the right floorboard where the joy stick mechanisim moves the hydraulic valve spools to be sure a stick or something hasn't jammed in there and has something blocked. Another thought is to be sure the hydraulic couplers just ahead of your right foot are fully connected. Frank.

All the above advice is good, so I won't add much. It's kinda like riding a bicycle, all of a sudden you just figure it out. Tell all the Johhny Dogooders who are watching over your shoulder giving you a constant banter of advice to go have a couple beers and leave you alone, they'll just make a nervous wreck out of you. As said above just go slow and easy, and don't worry about not doing a pro job right away. Have a good time with your new hoe. Frank.

About the only thing I'll add is go for the medium frame size(4310-4410) in a Deere or what ever that frame size corresponds to in a Kubota. It just seems to me you get lot more tractor for not a lot more money. Frank.

Ibrown59, I don't know much about antique garden tractors, but I'm sure someone on the board can help us both out. I've got a Simplicity walk behind complete with cultivator, sickle mower, and I think some other attachment if I could find it. My Dad got hold of it back in the 50's somewhere and I'm sure it would still start with a little coaxing. Reason I thought about it was because I had to move it the other day to get at some other collectable thing, (junk). Frank.

Yes Roger there is a better way. A high pressure pipe "T", with a high pressure ball valve most anywhere in the loader circit. Frank.

kwshcumm; I really don't want to start another tire design standoff, so I'll only mention a few reasons you could'nt give me a set of turfs. (1), stuck on wet grass. (2), In mud, totaly helpless, (3), I don't like all the little rocks being thrown in my face from the front tires while driving on a gravel road, (4), hard to get a dealer interested in trading in a tractor with turfs. Sometime back in the 70's I used to help my folks who ran a Mom and Pop sevice station in our home town. We had had a big snowstorm and the temps were below zero. A local farmer had a brand new 4430 John Deere with a loader on it, he was in town pushing snow. The tractor started to jell up on him so he drove it up to the gas pump and told me to put 5 gal of gas in the tank. I had never heard of this and almost begged him not to do that to a brand new tractor, but he insisted so I pumped the gas in. To my amazment the engine smoothed out, got back it's normal sound and power. he pushed snow the rest of the day and to my knowledge it ran for years after that without a problem. I still would have a hard time puting gas in the diesel tank, but it seemed to work for him. What ever you do please don't do this as a recommendation from me. Just a past experience. Frank.
