Zippy; It's mainly a mater of which you like the best and are the most comfortable with. Personally I like the 12/12 reversers for shuttle work and less power drain from the hydro it's self ,but that's only my opinion. As far as matinence, we've ran hydros on combines since the early 70's, and with proper fluid and filter service they just seem to run forever. Frank.

I thought it was a little pricey when I bought mine last spring, but it is one tough machine, I think a better dollar value than the lighter duty models, with proper care I doubt that an MX5 would ever actually wear out. I had it on the 4310 with the loader on and it seemed to be a well ballanced rig. Onec in a while i would get into some wheel high stuff that would tax the 4310 some so I would cut it about a foot high then wait a day till the fresh cut clippings had dried out then go back a second time to cut it shorter. I did'nt check out a lot of other brands, but the ones I did check looked pretty limp compared to the Deere, but really were'nt enough less money to make them attractive. Frank.

Jonathin; your question on why someone would'nt want a cab. I have put sunshades on my 4000 series Deere tractors. I kind of enjoy the open air feeling. I've had cabs on farm tractors since the early 70's. The first ones were real crude especially the decibel level and no air cond. The cabs we have today on our 7000 and 8000 series Deere tractors are nearly as quiet as your new pickup, decibel level has ben taken down drasticly. On perhaps a negative note, most madern cabs have minimal windows that can be opened and running with the cab door open just isn't an option. So what this leads to is that if the AC breaks down your done till it's fixed. The heat buildup in a cab from the greenhouse effect is unbelievable, just hop in your car after it's been sitting on a parking lot till late afternoon, same thing. Frank.

I chose a box blade for ballast because it can do things other than provide weight, but this has been a few years ago and with todays rampant price increses maybe it's just not an economic choice now. Keep smileng, Frank.

JIVI; Most any machine shop or weld shop will have access to a supply house that will likely have a replacment yolk that will fit and can change it out just like replacing U-joint bearings as long as the U-joint size is the same. Frank.

TomG; When you mention Wally World I start to build a head of steam. I'll admit I go there just like everyone else. Iowa has 99 counties and the county seat towns in two thirds of those 99 are probably in the 2000 to 6000 population range. It kind of gives me a sick feeling when I remember the localy owned main street business places who took pride in what they sold that have been forced out of business by a giant corporation who takes all the profits out of town. I've really never sat in the cab of a small tractor, but I'm sure they have improved the cabs on small tractors just as the cabs on farm tractors have been improved drasticly over the past 30 yrs. Check the mounting of the cab, is it bolted diredtly to the frame without any rubber mounts that transmit sound, check the interior, are the sides, roof, glass, etc, curved or flat to reduce sound reflection. I know nothing about a Kubota cab, nor have I ever sat in a 5000 series Deere cab. So my thoughts are drive them both on a hot day under load to check out the AC and the decebel level. A poor cab is worse than no cab at all, so if you're going all the way the 5000. bucks is not that important if you're getting a better cab. Either tractor will retain it's value as both have excellent equipment. Just my thoughts, Frank.

Snogless; Congrads on your new tractor, better add on to the shed for all the other attachments that you've just gotta have. I started out with everything I'd ever need, but it is getting harder and harder to convince the Mrs. why I just have to own one more piece of equipment. Anybody have a list I can borrow? I don't know anything about a Ford V10, but a friend of mine recently traded his Dodge V10. I never drove a pickup whith so much power, but his best mileage was between 5 and 6 MPG. With two dollar gas you'd have to have a real need for that much power. Maybe Ford V10's get better mileage than his Dodge, so I'd sure ask around before I bought the truck. Just my thoughts, Frank.

My only comment comes from experience, I am not any kind of an electrician, so I let the pros do that. I've rewired the main shop three times since it was built (1981). The last time was three phase and I think 440 volts, I don't have a clue how many amps, but some of those breaker boxes are big. The local REC was very helpfull in planning things to meet code, etc. Another lesson learned from experience, whenever you bury a line run it thru an underground conduit that's at least twice as big as you need now, I'll guarantee someday you'll need heavier wires and doing that now makes upgrades a simple matter. hope this helps, Frank.

WOW, sounds like you love a challenge, I can't add much to what Agentorange said only in similar situations I learned the killing the sod with roundup and letting it die completly before doing anything else will make your job a lot easier. Those big clumps of green sod mixed in with rocks just don't work down real easy. Good luck, Frank.

I've had our JD CUT's in for service several times and just never ask about a dyno check, so that's a good question. The same dealer services our JD farm tractors and I know that a dyno check is a regular part of the winter checkup. I've never noticed a dyno check on our 4000 series on the winter checkup list. Next time I'm in I'll ask just for curiosity. I noticed you have a "Super M" and a "Cub". I also have some Farmalls around. I grew up driving letter series and still like them I've got five in parade ready never come out of the shed condition, three or four we still use, and quite a few rust buckets in reserve. We still use a Super M, Super H, regular M, and a 656 that I bought new in 1965 or a regular basis. They just don't seem to ever wear out. Enjoy the day, Frank.

Brokenarrow; thanks for the pat on the back for the ag industry. I did'nt mean to be crying on anyones shoulder about the problems in the ag business. We're all in the same boat and every business or the employees of the business have different problems to overcome and hopefully somehow things can get back to a more rational slower inflation rate. I've been enjoying the Board as a place to discuss common intrests regardless of how anyone makes their living and put the everyday problems of politics, wars, and whatever else we're involved in out of mind for a while. For a year or so I had both a 4300 and a 4310. The 4300 will do everything that a 4310 will do. The main differece between the two is creature comfort. The controls are more user friendly, better seat, better tilt wheel control, etc. I guess the hydro drive pedals are easier to push, (I've never owned a Hydro). I do know that good used CUT's are in high demand, so maybe looking at new before the next big price rise kicks in might be your best bet. I rcently traded the 4300 for a 4410, and my trade in was sold like three days later. Frank.

Is the cab a hardside type with doors that seal with a car door type weather strip or canvas sides with canvas doors that kind of shut like on the old jeeps? A steel cab would be lots easier to seal than a canvas one. I think your biggest concern should be horsepower, a compressor, elecric fan, and whatever else consumes energy with enough capacity to keep you cool in the cab will use nearly half your available horsepower. I'm not trying to be Mr. Gloom and Doom, but another factor to contend with is all the heat that will be put inside the cab by the transmission, rearend housings, hyd. lines that will have to be taken out thru the AC system. Jonathin; Before I bought my first CUT I looked at a blue one an orange one and a green one. Ended up going with green mainly because of the dealer. I'd done business there for years dealing with farm equipment and have never had but the best relations with them. I'm sure that with proper care any of the three will do most everything you'll need done. Any brand can break down, that's where good dealers shine above the crowd. Pick a dealer that's been around thru thick and thin and still is in business, ask a few of his costomers how they've been treated. He may not be the cheapest, but when push comes to shove with a service problem if he has a reputation of taking care of his costomers. I think that's 90% of your brand choice. hope this helps, Frank.

Since I'm real new to the landscape rake I don't know how it would perform on gravel that has become compacted, but it sure worked slick on newly spread crushed rock by swathing it to the center of the drive then setting the angle back to 90% then spreding the swath by going stradle of it. I can see how a top and tilt would be a neat addition to the rake. I've never priced one, but I think they would cost more than the rake, (Land Pride 1584). Frank.
