Need some help from you experts. I have a JD4200 that I'm going to add the FEL to this Spring. Is there any reason I can't use a 430FEL on the 4200 (I know the 420 is spec'd, and hyd flow is less, etc.).
I would like to get all the lifting capacity I can, especially in light of the fact that I want to add a bodozer grapple on eventually. I plan on upgrading to a 4310/4410 in the next couple of years so I would like to invest in the FEL once and keep it.

I can not speak from actual hands on experience but my understanding is that the 420 FEL is spec'd for the 4200/4210 and the 430 FEL will not fit. You may be able to make modifications to it to make it fit but run the risk of over loading the frame/front axle on your 4200 should you use the full capacity of the 430 FEL. You best bet would be to go to a dealer and see if you can compare the two FEL's side by side mounted on their respective machines and make notes of similarities and differences. ....

The 430 will not fit. Why bother to try and modify? The front axle and tires of the 4200 will not handle anymore weight.
The loader designed to go on it will give you better preformance than something cobbed up to fit.
You can put a larger bucket on the 420. Those will fit. Your grapples will fit.
You will get your money back at the time of trade. My thought is if you are thinking about upgrading get to dealing. JD can peel a pile of cash off when you buy a tractor and the accessories cost a lot less. I have not looked at the intrest rates lately. ....

As others have said, your tractor will be overloaded to the point ypu will break something like a front axel housing that will cost enough you'll wish you'd traded tractors. 430 loaders hold their resale real well, but not if they've been modifyed. Frank. ....

Guys...thanks for all your help. Maybe the best bet would be to bite the bullet and upgrade to the larger tractor now. (any advice on selling that to the wife!)
I need to keep the budget down (new baby on the way). Would you guys recommend the 4300 or would you go for the 4310. Is there that much of a difference?

For a year or so I had both a 4300 and a 4310. The 4300 will do everything that a 4310 will do. The main differece between the two is creature comfort. The controls are more user friendly, better seat, better tilt wheel control, etc. I guess the hydro drive pedals are easier to push, (I've never owned a Hydro). I do know that good used CUT's are in high demand, so maybe looking at new before the next big price rise kicks in might be your best bet. I rcently traded the 4300 for a 4410, and my trade in was sold like three days later. Frank. ....

Both the 4300 and 4310 are good machines. I prefer the newer 4000 Ten Series but either will give you great performance. As stated above; my reply to the issue of the FEL for your 4200 is a purely hypothetical response and in my opinion would be a bad course of action and waste of money. If you want more capability; upgrade to a 4300/4310 or you can probably find a 4400 in good condition if you want the extra bit of hp & torque.
I suggest you carefully consider the task you anticipate and match the trator against it and leave some fudge factor with respect to capabilities and capacities. In other words, it the 4200 cannot meet your needs; will a 4300? Do you need to go larger or keep what you have and hire or rent a machine to do a few tasks. Just a few ideas to throw out on the table to consider. ....
