I just used my 1584 this morning to level crushed rock in a driveway. This is the only thing I've used it for so far as I just got it a couple weeks ago. It really worked nice. Mine doesn't have the wheel kit, but by going slow and keeping one hand on the 3pt. lever you can do a nice job. The gravel truck had spread it as he dumped, then I set the angle of the rake to sort of swath the rock to the center of the drive then set the angle back to straight and just leveled down the swath. There might be a more proper method but this is my first experience with a rake, so if I'm doing it wrong somebody with more experienc let me know. Frank.

Like was said have plenty of shear pins on hand. Don't try to drill the hole in one fell swoop, as you're drilling pull the auger up a bit in the hole to allow it to clear the soil out of the auger, other wise if you hit a rock, root, or something that cuts a shear pin it's not quite as much of a pain go get the auger loose. Rocks are a piece of cake compared to tree roots. go slow and easy, a runing auger up out of the hole can be a nasty thing to get someone caught in. Best of luck and above all be carefull. Frank.

If I remember correctly the tines were either inch and a quarter or inch and three eights by about 16 in. long, and your're right a pressure relief valve would have solved the problem. I did fail to mention that is was grappling rocks nearly as big as a wheelbarrow too. So that machine was tough, but the tines weren't quite as strong as the frame and maybe that was designed in to keep goofers like me from destroying it. Frank.

TomG; in my earlier post I talked about keeping the grade at 1% or greater. You are right the steeper the grade the more water a drain will carry. I guess I was speaking of field drainage tile. We live in an aeria where a non submerged outlet is almost a gift from above. We've ran (with a laser) as flat as 1/10th% grade to get an outlet out of a low areia, you're right it is slow to drain but it does work. When I was a kid (shortly after the Pilgrims landed) I worked part time for an Uncle who was installing the sewer hookup lines from from the main line in the street in our new town sewer system to homes around town. First day on the job he ran the hoe and guess who was in the trench with a pointed shovel and a four ft. level. He said "keep it on a half", I asked him what he was talking about, his reply was keep the level on half a bubble other wise it's too steep and will plug. I really never knew what degree of slope a half bubble is on a four ft. level, but so far I've never known of any I helped install giving trouble. Frank.

WOW, I never dreamed how many responses I'd get to my rotaty mower question, I really apreciated each and every one, and did learn a lot from you guys and the suggested web sites. For right now I'm going to build the pump unit for the farm use and someday go on from there with other ideas. I've never been happy without a challange of some kind. Just now got to thinking, why not buy a milk cow, have the wife milk her twice a day and just move the cow to the next fencpost down the road after every milking. Frank.

Several years ago we were giong to build a house, but the spot we liked would have required a lift pump for the sewer. I called the local septic service guy, his answer at that time was avoid the lift station if possible, that they can be a problem, so we moved the house further up the hill and avoided it. But perhaps by now the pumps have been improved. Best of luck, Frank.

horstuff; The first compact I ever drove was a 4100 that the dealer brought out with a Land Pride rear mower. it was a nice tractor, but just not enough horsepower. If you're going to put a hoe on it the 4110 just isn't quite heavy enough, first time you hook a root you'll drag the tractor before the hydraylic will give up. Just this winter I traded a 2000 model 4300 in on a 4410, I got a good trade plus the dealer had the 4300 sold to someone before it ever left my property. I would vote for the 4310 as having the better resale as your getting into the size where not only home owners but landscapers, construction firms, and farmers are coming into the picture too. Once you get used to having whichever size you choose I'll bet you a double dip Baskin Robins you never sell it. Have a great week, Frank.

Deeremd; I trade pickups every other December. Used to be a Ford man till the Ford dealers turned into jerks, been a Chevy man the last two just because the Dealer has been super. Trucks were a toss up. Having a good dealer is 90% of your decision. Frank.

Bobc; The small light duty 3pt. disc harrows were never meant to be a primary deep tillage tool. They are meant to work down a seed bed that has been deep tilled by a moldboard plow, chisel plow or some other impliment that works the soil down to 7 to 10 inches deep to loosen it up so your disc will penetrate the soil. Wait till the soil looks plenty dry then wait another day or two before doing any deep tillage in heavy soils in the spring. Working heavy soils while they are too wet will get you the nicest assortment of grapefuit size clods you ever saw. Pick up a handfull of unworked soil, squeeze in the palm of your hand, if it stays in a solid ball it's too wet, if the ball of soil fals apart it's time to go. Depending on how large an aeria, how much surface trash, etc. are involved maybe a rotary tiller is your best choice, but then don't use the disc behind the tiller as you've did everything you need in one pass. Wildmike; I totaly agree with your thoughts on starting a diesel under full load causing problems. I don't remember the exact years, but when GM started using the 350 block for a diesel and they turned out to be a total failure. I think they were an inherintly weak engine, but I allways though that not one out of a hundred people who bought them knew anything about properly warming up and cooling down a diesel engine. An example we had a local RFD mailman who grew up running diesel equip. bought up a half dozen or so of those old GM diesels that were still running when no dealer would take thm in on trade. I think he just recently used up the last one, he was getting a couple hundred thousand miles before they pooped out. Frank.

What has your outdoor temprature been there. I have known of the fluid to carry enough free water with it after spring warmup to clog the super fine metal pump intake screen. If you've changed your fluid and filters lately then that likely isn't the problem, but it does sound like something is starving your pump after a certian time interval of operation. Likely the 3pt. ram doesn't require near as much fluid as the loader rams, so it would raise the 3pt. before iceing or watering over of the screen would occur. lots of other possibilitys here like a partly stuck relief valve, an air leak into the line on the suction side of the pump? Just thought I'd throw out some things I've saw happen. Best of luck, Frank.

drcvi; I too add my sorrows for your loss. I went to three funerals last week plus three men younger than me had heart attacks within the last two weks, thank God all survived. I can't add much to what's allready been said except don't let your mind turn to mush in front of the TV. Get the tractor and keep your body and especially your mind busy. Frank.

After seeing three local fellows in their mid fiftys have heat attacks in the last two weeks, they all survived so far thank God, and I'm close to ten years older than them I've decided to move ahead a little faster on my retirement weld shop project. I'm sort of a brand loyal freak so I'd like to stick with Jet brand equipment. The dealership has been there probably 50 yrs before Jet was ever heard of, and allways treated me right. Anyhow, I'd like to get a shear, either the Jet PS 1652 pneumatic or the HS 1652 Hydraulic. Do any of you have one of these models, or have any knowledge about them, I've never seen one other than the catalog. I've got plenty of air to operate the air model, but is there a reason the hydraulic is better? If my memory is correct it seems that the air model is about 1,000. less money. Any opinions positive or negative would be apreciated. Thanks, Frank.

That about happened to me once. About 20 yrs. ago one of the kids had an old Dodge college car that our local mechanic replaced the brakes on, the next day I bought a set of tires for it over the phone from a big town flash and bang tire place, sent the girl in to have the tires mounted. I warned her they would try to sell her everthing from new antifreeze to whatever it did'nt need. Guess what in less than an hour she called back, the "TECH" said it needed new brakes!!! I ask the daughter to let me talk to the "TECH". I don't think I need to tell the rest of the story. Frank.

I had the same problem with a Case 1070 farm tractor once. A coter pin had came out of the linkage inside the housing under the seat and let a linkage rod come unhooked. I'd try lots of other remides before I riped into the housinmg, but just thought I'd pass that along. Frank.

ncrunch32, I guess on what basis you want to figure the payback. We use out CUT's for lighter farm work, so they do earn their keep. Granted we could use an "H" Farmall or a "66" Oliver and get most things done that the CUT's will do, if you were content to get along without live pto. power steering, much inproved hydraulics, etc., etc., but the little ones make your job fun instead of a chore. Ther just isn't anything much more relaxing than going out after supper to mow a waterway, road ditch, dig up something with the backhoe, or whatever with a machine that don't break down. If I do retire from the farm some day at least one of the compacts will go with me just for the fun of having something to do. Frank.

I have a 48 hoe on a 4310, even if it will fit I think you're begging for all kinds of trouble. a 48 hoe is almost 500 lbs. heavier than a 47 and to make matters worse the lift capacity of the 3 pt. on the 4210 used to lift the hoe into position on the subframe is 500 lbs. less than a 4310. I've ran farm and industrual equipment all my life and beleive me overloading a machine ends up costing you way more than using a proper size machine from the git go. Without a loader or lots of front weights on the 4210 I really doubt that you cold mount the hoe without the front of the tractor coming off the ground. Frank.

boltej; When you say sealed for life do you mean that there is no where on the hydro unit to check the fluid level or add fluid to it? Was there fluid on the floor where the tractor sat for the winter? Like Art mentioned most hydro mowers have a disengage lever or pull rod you can use to unhook the transmission to make it easier to push around with a dead motor. Perhaps a stuck valve in the system. Does it have a filter? tell us more we'll try to help. Frank.
