Do yourself a BIG favor and get the R4's. On ice or snow I really doubt there's enough difference in tire design for tractors that makes much difference. In the woods if you encounter the slightest bit of mud you're stuck with the turf tires. I demod a compact with a rear mount finish mower to mow road ditches, waterways, field borders, etc. It had turf tires 4 WD, but the slightest bit of wet aeria or on any upgrade I was stuck. R-1's (regular farm tractor tread are too agressive and will leave tracks in the lawn, but the R-4's with the wider bars might leave a slight track in the lawn, but you'll really have to look to see it. CD; Your hose bursting really makes me wonder if there could have been another reason a hose that new blew? Is this hose between the pump and the point of first relief, where possibly a relief valve could have stuck. I had almost the same thing happen a couple weeks ago on a Case 1070 (hose blew in front of the radiator going into the oil cooler, and it was a mess), but this tractor is a 1973 model and that's the first hose I've ever replaced on it. Perhaps it was a defective hose when new, but that seems years too soon to fail. Just a thought.

Tucker, you bring up another interesting point. In our neck of the woods it's not at all unusual for rural wooded one acre lot to bring as much a 60K with no utilitys. Some of this land would'nt have brought 60K fo 300 acres of it 25 years ago. So before you get too bulldozer happy I think I'd check around with the county extension folks or possibly hire a landscape designer to look your property over as you might destroy a diamond in the rough that with parhaps keeping some of the best of your cedars and with some sweat equity on your part could be made into a real showplace. Other than the heavy tree removal a lot of this kind of thing you could do yourself, perhaps a small pond, some rock gardens, retaining walls etc. that don't require a lot of real expensive materials you could handle yourself with your tractor/ loader/ hoe/ and perhaps a box scraper. We've did quite a bit of this kind of thing and it's really kind of fun to watch it develop. Just another idea.

Carlton, most current model FEL"s are easily installed with common hand tools to mount the brackets that stay on the tractor when you dismount the loader, then the brackets stay on the tractor and normaly no tools are needed to mount and dismount the loader after ther initial mounting. That sounds like a good idea to wait till the new model comes out, then you likely could have your choice between a leftover current model or the new model. Sometimes buying a current model with a proven releliabiblty record is'nt all bad as problems can show up in new models of most anything after they are given the test of time. Another thing to consider is that you might get a better price on a package deal of the tractor and a current model loader, new models normaly have a price increase involved. Have fun shopping.

If you're buying a new loader they usually offer the option of a heavy duty bucket. On my J D 430 I think it was a little over $100.00 diference between the standard and the H D bucket, I really think there worth the extra cost. I too like a bucket that's a bit wider than the wheel tracks of the tractor especially in snow.

AC5ZO, thanks for the advice, the hypertherm dealer did tell me that their tips were less expensive than some other brands, and that was one of the reasons he favors them. The Miller dealer did'nt mention the cost of tips, but at that time I did'nt know anything about tips. I've pretty much made up my mind to go with the Hypertherm as the dealer has been there for years and years, I've bought Acetylene and Oxygen from them for a long time, sso I'm sure they will stand behind anything you buy there.

We've had mid mount mowers for years on Deere Lawn and garden tractors, they were good machines, did an excellent job, but I allways dreaded taking them off to mount the tiller or for maintenence. My Wife still has her J D 345 with a MMM for front yard type mowing. I have a Land Pride 3 pt on the 4300 Deere for field border and road ditch mowing. both do a good job, but the ease of mounting a 3 pt. compared to a MMM is quite an item to me.

Bill made a good point about the zero turn mowers. I used to mow a neighbors lawn while they were on vacation, he had a new Dixion ZTR that I used. That thing would out manuver any rider bar none, so if cutting grass is your only need I too would recommend checking them out, but as Bill said they have only one use.

Sometime in the early 70's I worked part time in a gas station. We had a big snowstorm, so a local farmer with a brand new 4430 Deere and a front end loader was going around town plowing out drives, etc.. It was zero or below and his tractor started to jell up so he pulled up to the pump and told me to run 5 gal. of gas in his fuel tank. I tried to talk him out of the idea, but no go so I put the gas in, and to my surprise he never had any problems in the future. I still don't think it's a good Idea, and would'nt do it to my tractor, I try to run 50/50 #1, #2, in the loader tractor and haven't had any problems.

Luke, I'm not familiar enough with Kobota to know if they make a hoe atachment or not, but I've allways had better luck keeping atachment brands matched to tractor brand. If you'r doing light duty only a 3 pt. hitch model would probably work fine, but the hoes with a subframe that stays on the tractor when the hoe is off are easier on the tractor frame. The subframe spreads the load of the hoe over a bigger aeria of the tractor rather than just the three pt. I've never priced a 3 pt. model, but I'm sure there less for a like size unit. Perhaps you might find a used subframe model for the same or less money than a new 3 pt. Enjoy your shopping.

Ron, no matter what brand you buy, find a local dealer who has been in business selling the same brand for several years. He wants you to be as happy with your tractor as you want to be, so I'm sure he (or she)will be glad to recommend what you really need or don't need. I think the compact business is getting prety competive so the dealer does wnt you happy and coming back for more in the future. Hope this helps.

Unless a factory approved additive is recommended for some reason I'd be shy of any additive to the reommended grade of oil for your tractor. Things sure have turned around in 50 years we used to overhaul car motors at 75 to 100k and tractor engines at 2 to 3000 hrs because the rest of the car or tractor was still good. Today the body rusts off the car and the engine might still be going fine at 300k, and tractors today with 10 to 15000 hrs. without an overhaul aren't uncommon. Better bearing materials, closer tolerances, and much improved oils seem to keep things going fine for a long time, so I kind of hesitate to mess with something that is working fine.

After running diesel equipment for nearly 40 yrs I ran a tractor out of fuel just this past week for the first time in my life. It was a Case model 1070 tractor. I'd been told you had to crack injector lines to get all the air out, but being afraid they might not reseal I cracked the line between the filters and the injection pump, added some fuel to the tank then used the hand primer to pump the air thru the filters till it was bubble free fuel, turned the key and to my amazment she started right up, ran a little rough I suppose till all the air was out of the injector lines then ran just fine. Probably you should check your owners manual first, but this worked for me, maube just beginners luck.

I can think of three more 1940's Cubs beside my own within a one mile radius of where I live. It has less horsepower than my wifes lawn mower, I don't use it for anything, but being there such a neat little tractor we just keep them around.

Charlie, when I put up the farm shop few years ago I wanted to put in a one legged hoist such as you describe, and also had a used hoist from a gas station with the cylinder under the floor, but the concreet contractor refused to pour the footings for either one for liability reasons. So my solution was buying a used Clark forklift with conventional pneumatic tires that was meant to operate in outdoor conditions. In the end I spent less money, and can carry things most anywhere, but I did give up the ability to suspend something while repairing it, I don't trust the hydraulics enough to work under something on a forklift.
