I'd stay with the R-4's. I've had them for years on three different compacts in every enviroment possible and have got along fine.
I've never used chains, they can tear up things like fenders, steering arms, anything in their way.

WOW, that's a lot of yam. About like my pumpkins, I can only bring in one at a time from the patch. I have to use two log chains to go around one to drag them in one at a time with the John Deere.

Being we're discusssing deep fried turkeys and Spam. The Mrs. did bring home a turkey, the only way I'll even consider eating it is the next day a cold white meat sandwich with enough mayo to kill the taste.
Spam on the other hand the Mrs. won't buy but I can make a treat out of it right from the can, fried alone, in scrambled eggs, pretty tasty now and then.
Once in a while I sneak off to the store and stock up on Spam and Sardenes in Mustard sauce, YUM!!!!

I don't have anything special for snow removal equipment, a 4310 Deere with a 430 loader/72 inch bucket and a Land Pride landscape rake. I used to have a rear blade that I bought for dirt work, that was a joke unless the soil was fresh worked ahead. I traded the blade for a Landpride landscape rake, again it won't move any soil that isn't pre loosened but a great tool for leveling fresh dumped crushed rock. It works just as well as a blade for snow except for ice but then a blade is pretty much worthless there too. <br>

Best I've found for tearinmg up ice is a box blade. Lower the scarifying teeth in your box blade to a couple inches below the blade. go slow and stay off your nice blacktop drives, it works for gravel drives the best. It will jerk, yank, bang, and crash, but it will do a pretty good job on the ice after two or three passes.<br>

I purposely don't use tire chains in snow work, the bare tread tires are my "Slip clutch" so tp speak for when I hit something. So long as I have a loader with a hydraulic bucket I have so far always been able to get myself out of a stuck position using the bucket to push myself out.<br>

I think I've probably said this fifteen times if I've said it once that to me a front loader and a rear snowblower on the same tractor is my dream machine. I used to have that setup in a much larger form but sold it with the farm, what a dumb trick that was!! Mrs. won't let me buy one back now, says I'm too old.<br>

It's all but impossible to get a 100% fluid change, there is always some left in hoses and cylinders, etc.
It would be possible to get more old fluid out by disconnecting hoses from cylinders and letting gravity take out what will run or maybe by using a bit of air pressure to help push the old stuff out. How ever you would do some of these things you will never get 100%, and I guarantee you will be an oily mess before you are done.
Just drain the reservoir according to your owners manual, change the filter or filters and refill.

Guess i never saw a PTO leaf blower, It doesn't seem it would take much power to operate it. But to be on the safe side I think I'd opt for the heavier shaft.

Good advice, I need to brush up too, I'm an experienced "I've Already Been Gouged Expert." The schemes I fell for 30 yrs. ago are as outdated as a Poodle Skirt, Experience is the best teacher. The latest one has happened the last two Sunday mornings in a row.
Guy who sounds like a gangster calls up wanting to know how much I want to bet on a certian football game. "Huh" I say, "You wana bed on da foodbal games today??" (Click), Most I've ever bet was a dollar on a world series pool, I've never bet on a football game in my life, in fact I don't even like football. So where does this guy get my phone number thinking I'm a big time sports gambler? I'm sure he's not interested in anything less than a five thousand dollar bet, and I would guarante that nobody has ever won betting with him. Is that even legal?

That is a question which is about impossile to answer without being somewhat familliar with your aeria, the soil types,drainage, cost to clear it etc. I've been thru different parts of Louisiana and saw lots of soybeans, corn and some cotton, so I'm guessing one of those would be your best row crop choice.

I agree with Auer, you don't want to give up the 4 wd. for a few more horses in a two wheel drive.
I assume you are talking about a three point hitch mounted mouldboard plow? If so what size plow and how deep are you plowing?
If this is a one time thing and not an annual operation, I'd suggest adding some front weights and droping down a gear lower with the tractor and plow you have. I don't know if you have a front end loader but if so you kick yourself for ever going back to a two wheel drive tractor.
So far as the critters, you need to call an exterminator to get them gone, they have products that we as un licensed people can't legally buy. I have them treat the shop and shed every fall about the time the little guys are looking for a winter home. So far I've never saw a mouse or a rat

How true, we priced a new Tahoe about a month ago. You can't get a new Trailblazer anymore, that's what I really wanted, they seem just the right size for us, the Tahoe and especially the Suburban are just too big.
Anyhow after I saw the trade figures for our 07 Trailblazer with 75,000 miles to a new Tahoe, 32,500. plus Tax title, and all that hooey. My goodness how sweet that
Trailblazer runs now.

I haven't been to a movie theater since "Grumpy Old Men" came out, so it's been a while but just seeing the ad's for upcoming movies makes me not want to see them. Sex,and violence seem to have to be included or they don't sell. We had Direct TV installed about a year ago, with it came three months of free movie chanels that are normally their "Premium" channels that cost an extra charge, I don't remrmber how much per month. We watched the first few minutes of several and changed the channel, they were laden with every kind of locker room language allowed. <br>

Daytime sitcoms and soap operas are even worse, I have to wonder about the morals of whatever or who ever supposedly screens this stuff to make sure it is fit for vieving.<br>

When the movie "Hoffa" came to TV I wanted to see it thinking it may have some historic signifagance, instead it was only a lesson in how to cuss, again just more garbage.<br>

From the time kids are old enough to be proped up in front of a TV set the most powerfull industry we have takes over. The advertising industry begins their hold on the kids soon as they are able to recognize anything. <br>
<br>
This "Control Industry" I'll call it never lets go of a person from the cradle to the grave. We need to think for ourselves and teach our kids to do the same rather than be puppets of the "Entertainment" industry.<br>
<br>
There is some good stuff on the TV as with the internet, both can be great learning tools but more and more they are just an avenue for more and more garbage we can live without.<br>

Yep, I kinda like to stur up a little discussion once in a while, other wise things get too dull.
OK, now here is my real analysis of the hydro/gear thing.
I've been around and operated hydro farm tractors since the mid 1960's when International Harvester had two or three models in the 60 to 90 horsepower rsnge. My uncle bought a 656 hydro gasoline model thinking it would be great for the bailer. It was kinda OK but we soon went back to the 656 gear. An inexperienced operator would be to agressive with the hydro control lever and consequently throw the man on the hayrack behind the bailer off the wagon. The bigger models we didn't have but others said they worked well with a field chopper. The 656 hydro pulling a heavy disk, moldboard plow or other impliment where most all of the power produced by the engine went to the drive wheels proved to be prety wastefull of fuel. Too much heat was generated by the hydro unit that was just waste heat that had to be relieved by an oil radiator in front of the engine radiator. The production of heat requires fuel, if you have a use for the heat that is fine, but in the case of the 656 the heat/fuel was wasted.
Now to other applications,lawn mowers and other light duty equipment, yes, I have two 345 Deere hydro mowers, great machines, never a whisper of a problem with the hydros.
Combines and self propelled field choppers, the hydros are great. I had several hydro combines. In those applications the lions share of the engine power goes to the machine rather than the tractive motion, hydros are great there. The really heavy excavators, crawlers, and skidsteers are hydro, just a much simpler connection of power to the tracks than gears and clutches.
So see I'm not totally anti hydro, just on farm tractors. They just never proved to be as efficent as gears.

My 4310 12/12 power reverser is a pretty close cousin of the 3320 power reverser. I bought mine new in 2000 or 2001 and have been pleased enough that if I were to trade tomorrow I'd get a 12/12 again.

30 to 60 seconds is a long time for a starter to turn, this can't be nornmal. With only one hour on the meter it is something for Deere to take care of.

KT is getting you on the right track with the draunage issue. I don't want to prertend to be an expert on the issue, but after 40 some years of farming and dealing with drainage issues I'll kick in my thoughts.
You will be time and money ahead to hire an experienced farm drainage contractor. I've cut small short drainage channels with a box blade and loader combination, that works about the best of anything I've tried. The little light duty rear blades for a compact tractor don't have enough weight to cut anything other that pre loosed soil. I had one and sold it, the box blade has it beat six ways from breakfast.
Cutting the drainage channels will get rid of the standing surface water but that's only a small percent of solving the total problem. Even with the surface drainage you still need subsurface drainage tile to make the soil productive.
Let me explain why. Plant roots are a living thing that need air to survive. When the soil is waterlogged there is no air in the soil so the plants (Your Crop) do poorly or just plain die from lack of oxygen. The magic of drainage tile is lowering the water table to below where the roots need oxyger to live. There will still be plenty of water in the soil to grow the crop, drain tile do not remove more water than the crop needs, that is an old myth that is simply not true.

For my part please leave things as they are, they work just fine. My old phone is almost dead, my kids tell me to get a smart phone, I don't want one. All I want is a phone that rings and I answer, or I call someone and they answer. No call waiting, text messaging or any of that BS, please, keep it simple.

Someone in this discussion made the comment that a loader was meant to lift the load and dump it without carrying the load anywhere before dumping it. OK, that got me to thinking.
I have a borrow pit aprox. 750 ft. from the building site that I've brought all the fill for different projects in a bucket full at a time from the pit to whatever the current project may have been. This is a "Very Rough" estimate but to the best of my calculations over a ten year period I've likely brought 7-800 buckets full from the pit about 7-800ft. away comes up about 106 loaded miles. This is with the 4310 W/430 loader W/73 inch bucket. This doesn't count the many many many rocks the poor little thing would barely lift from where they were dug up in the field to a dumping point at the end of the field. So far nothing has broken or bent, I thought this is what a loader was for. Far as I can remember my current tractor loader combo is the third tractor loader/combo. I've owned since 1962. The first two did suffer some injurys from overloading but I doubt the were as well engeneered or matched to the tractor size as my current outfit.

I'd say you are under the money, I doubt that twice the money you are asking would buy a new tractor and loader of like size and equipment. I don't know about the bush hog but I'd think a new one would top two grand so 12-1300. wouldn't be out of line. Everyone has their opinions on such matters but to me not having a hydro transmission is a positive. I've owned three 4000 series Deere's all with the E-Power Reverser transmission, if I were to trade tomorrow I'd insist on another E-Power Reverser transmision.
