I guess we can't let our guard down on about anything. A report on the local news a night ot two ago about fake census takers either calling or coming to the door wanting to confirm sometghing on your fourm, really all they are after is your SS number, etc.
I haven't gotten a "YOU HAVE WON' letter or E-mail for a while now, that must be old tech in the scamming world.

Ok just my take on the consumables. I still do the service on my tractors, mowere, Gators and their related equipment that I can do from ground level. Pickups and cars I used to do myself too till a handicap situation prevents me from gettting down and under things.
Now I go to the dealership where I bought the pickup and cars where i actually know the owner and most of the guys outback and am very confident they wouldn't slip in some cheap crap oil then chaerge me for the brand name oil. There are some big time dealerships that i wouldn;t trust to sevice a bicycle.
I'ts usually in the 23-26 dollar range for oil/filter/top the washer flids, check all other things underneath, etc. including the man's time to do the service. I'm sure they don't make a killing on this but it gets my car in ther door to do brakes, etc. whaterver else that actually makes them some money.
Back in my farming days when I used lots of oil transmission fluids and filters I still used whatever brand the machine was. Yes any brand oil that meets or exceeds the specs. in the owners manual is OK, but for the difference in the cost of the oils it just wasn't worth the risk of an unknown brand in a machine that cost 200K. Filters are another matter, I used to be a Baldwin dealer and can point to some very well known brand filters that are total junk, cut some new ones open to see what's inside. That sold more Baldwin filters for me than all the printed advertisment could have ever done. GM, Ford, Deere, Kubota, filters are good, I've cut them open too. Baldwin at the time i was involved could undersell the majors, till deere for example lowered their filter prices to remain competive, they weren't selling many filters when they got too aggressive with their pricing.
I think that old Henry Ford owned some oil wells and blended his own brew, but since then I doubt any auto ot tractor company owns any wells.

You don't really need a lot but from what I can see these things will make you a mower.
1. A shielded PTO shaft
2.In photo #2 the loose ring you see on the outer end of the lift shaft had a transport rod for the sickle bar that is missing. The little clip you see behind the lift system on the main channel iron frame was for storage of the transport rod while mowing. One could be easily made.
3. In photo # 17 you need the guide rod to turn the cut hay away from the inner end of the sickle. It fastened to the bolt you see in the center of the shoe casting, came forward under the shoe then up thru the open hole in the front of the shoe, then toward the rear and the direction of the sickle. You could make one of those.
4. In photo #4 someone cut the siclke bar lift lever off with a torch, you will need to replace that or as most did home build bracket system for a hydraulic cylinder to lift the bar.
5. Likely the former owner was using the three point lift arms to lift the whole mower frame to get thwe bar to lift. That isn't the way it was meant to work at all, the frame should be held at the same level all the time whether mowing or during transport.
5. The drive belt looks new but I can't tell the condition of the pitman stick, it may be rotted from sitting around but someone would likely have new ones, or I have made them with a straight grained piece of oak.

I've never had them and really can't think of any reason why I'd want them. With a bit if practice you can regulate it by eye with the three point lift lever.
The only way I can vision any benefit would be to have a caster type wheel like on the back of a rotary cutter way out back like five foot ot more then a loose three point top link. That might make it work like the real long land leveler machines they use in gravity irrigation fields.

I'm not familliar with that model tractor, maybe that is a problem common to that series, but I'd rather doubt it other wise it would have been brought to light here on TP long before now.
Again I'm not up on used tractor prices so I can't say what's a fair price, but I think in this case I'd start over looking at tractors that appear to be in better shape.
Being the outside and the mounting points show obvious abuse it's hard to tell what might be unseen on the inside that's ready to let go too.
Saving a bit on this one might prove to be a high priced service problem down the road. Frank.

Ok, I've tried the strap arouind the outside with limited success,
I saw an inflateable wrap around strap used in a tire shop once. The guy put it oround the circumference of the tread then inflated it till it got about the size of a bicycle tube. I never had one of those.
Now the starting fluid method. First time I saw that done was in my unheated shed about twenty years ago in the winter time. I bought a new set of drive tires for my 7720 Deere combine 30.5x 32. Big, stiff, heavy, and after the service guy got them on the rims they were probably eight to ten inches away from both inside and outside beads. He went to his servce truck for a can of starting fluid, sprayed it in the tires one at a time for what seemwed like a whole can. My first thought was he's not really going to do what I think he is going to do, "KABOOM", big heavy stiff tire was seated on the rim. he did the same on the other side. Wow learn something every day, I never had the courage to do it myself.
I'll probably just go out count the flats and make a trip to TSC for more tubes.

My 4310 is a 12/12 reverser transmission so I couldn't look under mine to see what's there. I did look it up in my service manual and by the looks of it there are several little levers, pins, etc that might be dry and need a bit of WD-40 or sometning to limber them up. Frank.

Mine is a 12/12 Shuttle transmission rather than a Hydro but I doubt that the front wheel assist shifter would be any different.
I haven't looked under there for a while but I THINK that the rocker switch commands an electric valve to operate a little hydraulic cylinder that does the shifting. Have someone operate the switch while you watch what happens underneath. I'm guessing that a stick or somethng may have pulled a wire off the valve underneath.
I do have a service manual but it is at the other house and won't be back there till Sunday.

E-Z outs were always a frustrating situation especially when an E-Z out snapped off level with the casting, a Malox Moment at best.
A blacksmith friend suggested using left hand drill bits to take out a broken off bolt. Greatest thing since canned beer, haven't used an E-Z out since. Start with a small bit to center the hole then work up to bigger bits just short of getting into the threads, usually by that time the shell of the bolt will spin right out with the bit. Frank.

I didn't read or hear about Deere reducing production, but my guess it would be in compacts and smaller lawn stuff that dealers would normaly have in inventory.
After the farm crisis of the early eightys when Deere and their dealers were caught with big inventories of new farm tractors that sat and sat before they finally sold things changed to a sold order only basis on farm tractors. A dealer may have a couple lower HP loader types on hand but hardly ever a big one just for inventory. With all the combinations of accessories that can be had there wouldn't be two farmers in the state of Iowa that would want identical accessories on a new tractor.
Combines and planters are even more so an order only sale. If you need a new planter for next spring you have to order it by this spring. No dealer is going to stock a 200K 24 row planter or combine and hope to sell it.

Your comment about buying new as a package may be a better choice reminds me of a couple times me trying to buy a good low mile two year old pickup, it just never worked out. For the little difference in cost you got a new warranty, zero miles, etc.. To top it all off right now when I don't need a new pickup or new tractor almost everybody on the planet is offering zero down, zero intrest, not something to overlook. Frank.

"Tractor Hunting" is a sport of it's own, kinda like antique hunting only our goal is something big and greasy.
I bought a used 1953 Super M Farmall in about 62-63 then later traded it for something bigger. Since it was the first tractor I bought on my own after having dad let me use his till I could afford one on my own. A few years ago I had a dream of finding the "Super" back. I did find it on a farm about twenty miles north of me but the guy said it's his favorite too and wouldn't sell it. I know the man is still living and still lives where he did, so I'll bug him about it again, maybe he's changed his mind.
Even if it comes to an auction I'm sure I'll pay more for it the second time than the first, but I'll have to outlive him first.

A power beyond circut simply takes the fluid supply that normaly operates the three point hitch arms and runs it thru the backhoe circut which has it's own pressure relief valve. When the backhoe is off the tractor the power beyond hoses are plugged back together. The fluid still goes thru them but now the fluid going thru them operates the three point arms, then the pressure relief valve is in the three point. The power beyond as it comes from Deere lets you have either the three point arms or the backhoe but not at the same time. If the power beyond hoses are not connected back together with the backhoe off the tractor you are dead heading the pump without a relief valve, the pump goes kabang, you need a new pump.
I have the third valve on my 4310 to operate a clam bucket on the loader when I use that bucket, other wise it would be the ideal way to power a top link. The outlets are on the rear of the right fender and the control lever is on the front of the right fender, about as handy as they can get.

Nothing in the business world shocks me anymore but the three companys you mention will likely be around for a long time with parts and service. Parts are high from anybody and any brand will have a lemon now and then.
Your biggest chioce is a good dealer that is a straight shooter and will be there with the parts and service you will need down the road with any of them. Staying local has a lot to be said for it too, saving the sales tax by going a state or two away can come back to bite you too when you need service. I think they are somewhat required to handle warranty where ever you buy but you'll likely find yourself at the bottom of the list for a while.

I don't have a PHD, so don't know for sure on that but I leave a bit of play for the BB and the rotaty cutter to allow for the BB catching a rock or for me being a bit close to a post or tree with the cutter. It keeps from yanking the tractor somewhat. I leave a bit of play for the tiller too, you always will find a rock or something that gives it a yank. Too much play is too much, but you'll soon find a setting that is pleasing to you, I don't think there are any hard and fast rules.

Unless the rims are special to that tractor only, any farm tire store can get rims and the tires you want. Check the yellow pages.

I agree with KT, Woods has made good stuff for a long time, but any brand three point hitch type backhoe is real hard on the three point hitch of any tractor.
Woods may offer a subframe type backhoe that usually uses the thre pint hitch arms to lift the hoe into place then it is fastened to the subframe. The subframes I'm familliar with stay on the tractor without affecting the use of other attachments.

Being you are from North Dakota I wondered how the Diesel Gator starts in the winter. I almost bought a diesel when we got the XUV, but was concerened about cold weather starting. I've pretty well decided the next Gator type machine we get will be a diesel unless they have cold start issues.
We used to come to ND quite often to visit friends who lived in La Moure County, great place, but just a bit more chilly than Iowa in the winter.

Sorry, I skipped over the part about Bush Hog. Again I never owned a Bush Hog box blade, but have had a couple of their rotary cutters and they were good machines.
If the teeth are a couple inches below the blade you won't have any problem with bouncing. The teeth will dig in and you'll have a load of dirt in seconds. One way I use mine is to pull up a blade or two full then use the loader to push it around rather than pushing backwards, it don't take long to get the hang of it, you'l do just fine.
