Rumor has it that Sears is about Kaput, so I don't know if this will work anymore but a friend of mine who is quite well to do has a Deere compact with loader and other things, but not a MMM. He buys a new Craftsman rider along with the extended warranty. By the second mowing season the Craftsman is geting pretty shot, so Sears fixes it till the warranty runs out then he gives it to anyone who will haul it away and does it all over again. Frank.

The original 4 X 4, and I'm sure the original 6 X 4's had an electric screw type lift. I overloaded mine on a 4 X 4, it doubled the screw over like a jacknife, end of that hoist. A new replacement from Deere was even at that time was an obscene price. I don't know if they will interchange but the HPX and XUV's have an electric over oil hoist that is more substantual. Frank.

EW; I know you have did lots more landscape work than I have but. I can vision a reverse tine rototiller working in roots, but my experience with a conventional forward rotation tiller was nothing but a wraped up mess of roots that had to be cleaned out about every five minutes. Enough of that. Where did I go wrong? I've did as Murf said a time or two and just put a layer of clean soil over the top and let them rest in peace.

In the mid 1950's International Harvester had a turbine powered tractor at the state fairs when they also had the square dancing Super "C" tractors. I think I have a picture of the turbine tractor somewhwere. I remember the exhaust from the engine was out the front at an angle above where a radiator whold have been on a conventinal tractor. I don't know if Art is old enough to remember this.

I don't have a clue what make you have.

Do you want to do this just to be doing it or is there an economic reason? Pretty decent riders are a dime a dozen, you likely can buy a complete one cheaper than building it your self. If you have some kids who need something to do this kind of thing keeps them off the street and teaches them a few basics of mechanics. Frank.

EW; Ok let me "Splain it tu ya". I don't know about other brands but. Stand back a bit from the side of the loader looking at the bucket cylinders and how they are connected to the bucket curl mechanisim. OK, gotcha that far. Now study the geometry of how the curl mechanism works in relation to the pivot point of the bucket. At full curl or uncurl, either way the cylinders have a lot harder job of moving the bucket under load because of the poorer mechanical advantage compared to half way thru the cutl cycle. SOOO, with the bucket bottom flat on the ground the gepmetry of the curl is at it's poorest position so I can feel a bit of strain with no counterweight on the three point that would offset part of the front end weight of the tractor. Class dismissed.

Sam; The only evidence I have about all the series being the same except the engine HP come from a JD factory tour when the 7 and 8 thousend ten series were in production. Your question was brought up to one of the engeneers about all the eight thousands being the same from the engine back. His reply was that some componets were the same for the economy of using like parts, but clutch packs were heavier, rear axles were heavier, etc. as horsepower incresed for more powrfull models in the same series. I would only assume that the same would be true in the newer series also. Frank.

Something else I just remembered about the new light poles they set past the farm. They had either a copper plate or a coil of copper wire on the bottom end of the pole with a copper ground wire running from there up the side, I have no idea how moist soil has to be to have a good ground contact. BlueMule; Your post is a success story in why finding a good local dealer and sticking with them pays off. I realize that "By the book" they aren't supposed to discriminate, but in the real world taking a piece of equipment to a local dealer for warranty work that you saved a few bucks or dodged the state sales tax by going a couple states away to buy puts you on the "Slow list" for service.

The little Oliver you have makes me drool a bit. Back in the 70's I sort of inherited one just like it, not a scratch on it. The sad part is we were a bit on the hard up side at the time so I sold it.

A lot has been discussed on proper ballast with a FEL, but nothing has been said about proper front ballast with heavy rear mount tools. This used to be a real concern for me with farm tractors using heavy wide three point equipment. I just drop the bucket, but have never had the loader itself off the 4310 so I've always had enough front end weight for rotary cutters , tillers, etc. It's been a good discussion with many having their favorite ways of ballasting, but it all boils down to nothing more than good common sense. If it seems risky, then it likely is. Frank.

Dannw; Welcome to the board. I have Deere for the same reason as you mentionerd, the dealer. My current 4310 is my third compact and all have been pretty basic, 12/12 transmission instead of a hydro. Having all the latest gizmos sometimes is'nt good when water, frost, or dust overpower the electronics involved. I have a #48 Deere backhoe for my 4310 and you asked about how well the little tractors do with a backhoe. I use mine around the farm for drain tile repair, rock removal, stumps, etc. they aren't meant for the real big stuff, but handle 99% of what I need. Another comment I will make about a backhoe attachment is if you have a Kubota tractor buy a Kubota hoe, John Deere tractor, a John Deere hoe, etc. Frank.

Ann; My 4310 has the mid PTO to operate an auxillary Hydraulic pump that I haven't quite got put together yet,(next summer for sure). I've never had a mid mower for it. I didn't know the hoe subframe had to be removerd to use a MMM, that would be almost an unuseable combination. Frank

Len; I don't think a different transmission is required but there will be internal parts to install. A shaft from the bottom gear of the rear PTO comes forward where you see the frost plug looking plug about 2 inch diamater plug on the lower part of the rear housing. The clutch that controls the mid PTO is just inside the housing where the mid PTO sticks out. The rear PTO must be running to make the center one function. Frank

Maybe you could get the hopped up Gator to do whellies in parades like the Shriners do with their little trikes. They have a lot of fun for a good cause.
