Most of you who have been around here a while have my old sermon on dealersahips memorised by now. If you are new to tractors the four brands you mentioned all have good dealer networks and parts avaiability for the long haul. I'd have a real fear of buying an import "Box Tractor" for fear of having a parts orphan in a short time. Make sure you are comfortable with the dealership you select, purchase price is important but not always as important as service and parts down the road, they all will need it regardless of brand. I do run a bit contrary to the crowd here on tires tho. I have found for my needs that R-4's have far exceeded the abilitys of turf tires for general use including front yard work. Don't underestimate the use you will give a FEL, like all of us you will be using it for lots more than you had ever thought so give priority to buying a high quality loader. There are lots of aftermarket loaders to be had sometimes at a lower cost than a brand match, (Kubota loader/Kubota tractor, etc.), but I've always felt that a brand match was built to work properly together far as mounting points, hydraulic flows and pressures, etc.. Mid mount mowers for some reason tend to be quite pricy, maybe a good used rider would cost less than a mid mount for an acre and a half. Not sure about other brands, but the Deere dealerships I'm familliar with have lots of choices in good quality used moweres that would handle an acre and a half easily and avoid the hassle of mounting and dismounting the MMM deck on your new tractor. I mow 2 1/2 acres with a Deere 345 rider with a 54 in. deck in about 2 1/2 hours. Enjoy your day. Frank.

Yyour ideas are sound ones, but the real world is that the Mrs. and I are both handicapped to the extent that entry and exit from any domestic sedan we tried was difficult at best, the flat floor of a pickup or SUV are SOOO much easier for us to get in and out. <br>

We had an 02 Chevy Venture for a family car that the Mrs. really liked with an nice flat floor, their automatic, (when it worked) rear wheel assist, but the engine bit the big one to the extent that repair was just not an economic optiion so the search for another 4 WD mini-van was on. <br>

We really do need the 4 WD, steep north slope drive, ICE, ICE, ICE. At that time (Jan 07) no body built a domestic 4 WD mini-van, so we bought an 07 Chevy Trailblazer 4 WD. It has an nice flat floor entry, kinda big enough for me, handles nice, so-so mileage, but the little Mrs. loves it, so end of that story. <br>

Now the pickup thing, we test drove the Silverado four door and then a Colorado four door. As someone else here mentioned, we are just plain spoiled by having the nice big roomy pickups and full size SUV's, the Colorado was a nice little pickup, but kinda scrunchy for a robust fellow like me. <br>

You mentioned your gal not being comfortable wheeling your big dually around the supermarket parking lot, same here, the Mrs. just isn't comfortable with driving a full size anything, but I am , so there you go. The underlying message I'm getting for the dealer is that he wants my pickup worse than I want his. In todays times I think a year old low dollar pickup would be lots easier for him to sell than the big high dollar four door. <br>

If my memory is correct there is a fuel shutoff solenoind on the injection pump that had a problem of fuel getting into it and shorting them out, If you have a tech manual there is a test procedure for it.
Joel; The PTO will operate without an operator on the seat as long as the parking brake is locked. I got back late once when a different driver was sent to the farm to pick up corn from a bin. The brake wasn't locked so he had found and piled enough rocks on the seat to keep the PTO going to operate the bin unload auger, good ole American engenuity. Frank.

EW; Yup you're missin somethin, I don't have a tree big enough to mount the FEL on, somebody borrowed my comalong, so I just left the loader on the tractor and lifted it that way. Seriously that seemed lots safer than having a tiller swinging from a chain with the bucket pretty high, just lift eer up and back it under. Take it from the somewhat educated one from Iowa.

I demo'ed a 4100 when they were fresh out of the box. Dealer brought it out with a 6 ft. rear mt. finish mower. Way too much mower for the 4100. They are a neat little tractor in their place, but I think the circimstances being as they are I'd pass and put the 10,000. toward sometning a bit more husky for backhoe use. I get real cautious when someone tells me how with just bigger a hose here and a valve there she will work just fine. Frank.

Is the Deere being sold by a dealer or private party? Is there carryover warrranty on the Deere? Good care by a prior ownwer is very important, but in some cases "Babyied" isn't always best, the first 100 hrs. on a diesel engine can be quite important to long engine life. 10 ten hour steady moderate load days will get you a lot longer lasting engine than 100 light load one hour days during that important first 100 hours on an engine. Unless the cutting width of the wider Deere deck is needed to cover the wheel tracks of the tractor a wider deck isn't always better unless you have a pool table smooth lawn. I am about as green as they come when comes to my tractor and equipment so if I sound a bit negative toward the used
Deere it isn't because of quality issues, just things that may affect your walled down the road. Frank.

I would hope they would be as good as the old "McCormick" name would suggest, only time will tell the complete story. I have no Idea how they can legaly use the brand of a trademark name on a product not produced by the original brand name company??? We saw them at a landscape type show last winter, but seemed to be no rep's in sight, also saw the new Case/IH compact models being represented by the rudest, most arrogant reps I ever met. Please don't ask for the date or location, last thing I need is getting into a shouting match with any big timers from Case/IH. Frank.

Bob; Your comment about your parents being scared of grinding gears very much reminds me of my Father who lived to 95, never took a pill in his life, worked in the shop till 92 type guy used to enjoy driving whatever series Gator I had at the time around the farm or whereever we might find him within a 10 mile radius. He was "Afraid" to put it into gear because of the grind thing so he would try to put it into gear slowly and in the real world just made it grind for a longer period. Finally I convinced Dad to let it idle then put it into gear more quickly and forcefully and far less grinding would occur. He did start doing it that way, but under his breath always muttered something like Chevrolet had syncromesh in 39, why the H### can't Deere figure that out. Today while "Cheerefully" going nursery shopping for some perfect potted plant with the Mrs. I saw a five wheel Deere AMT sitting at the ready at the door of the nursery, It shined like ma new one. I've got an 07 XUV with 140 hrs. Mine had a more of a "rattle" than a "tick" that was in time with the engine at idle and just a bit above idle. They traced it to a washer that was jingleing on a linkage of some sort under the box. Noise is gone. Frank.

I just checked at the local Deere dealer. Hy-Gard Lo-Vis is no longer available in 2 1/2's, now only quarts, gallons, five gallon buckets, or drums. Their one gallon jug price is 13.75. Frank.

I'm not too familliar with the Cub's but most hydro drives are basicly the same design. In most any system requiring fluid you would have had a jerky and noisy period as the system ran low on fluid because of some air being drawn into the suction tube as the fluid level ran low. Do check your fluid level, somewhere there is a dipstick or a visual indicator of somekind on it. Being you hear a slight engine load as the hydro lever is advanced I sooner suspesct that something has happend in the transmission behind the hydro. Does the hydro drive the transmission direct with a shaft or is there a belt between the hydro unit and the transmission that could be broken? Good luck. Frank.

We one time set a row of posts in a property line fence soon after the trees and brush were grubbed out with a dozer. Next step was a PTO auger for postholes, I think roots are worse than rocks. After a couple hours, probably 20 shearpins later we had a couple holes dug, end of that story. I went home got the backhoe, dug a trench, kids set the posts in, done in a half day. But, as Art said they had to settle a year before they wewe solid enough to put the wire up. Frank.

Joel; You have your opinions and I have mine. As you will recall we have never saw things on the same level, but your statement that helping an old lady up a flight of stairs is the most patroitic thing I could do is the most anti patriotic statement I've ever heard for anyone claiming to be a true American say. Murf; You are correct on how to drive a "T" post with the heavy pipe with the cap and the handles on the side. I even have a store bought one, not homemade for Heaven's sake we go first class around here. The loader push in deal with a bucket full of dirt for more push just never worked real good even without rocks. You sound like you even enjoy pounding in posts, has someonme been sneaking something into your coffee lately?

KT; That is great advice on keeping a journal of ANYTHING you do pretaining to raising a crop. For eaxample when spraying a pesticide, record tempreature, wind speed, wind diredtion, humidity, and of course rate of application. The Mrs. and I grew 46 crops and always recorded all that sort of thing, it would come in handy more times than you'd think. We finally threw most of that stuff away a couple years after we retired, but did pass any of it that would help our tennant on to him.

Cheif; I agree 100% the 4000 series was never meant to take the place of a heavy duty farm tractor, other than mowing, light tillage, backhoe work etc. I still have some regular farm tractors for that type of use. Deere does have a frame strenghting kit that can be installed with or without the backhoe subframe being on the tractor. When I learned about them here on TP, I had the dealership I mentioned in my prior post order and install one on the 4310 just as a safety measure. Far as I know it is the only one they ever sold form that dealership. The part number has been posted here on TP in the past, and I'm sure I could find it in my records if someone want's it. It isn't very expensive and is quite a massive piece of welded structure steel. The service manager's comment was that it seemed well worth the money and a couple hours to install just to be on the safe side. I've did lots of business with the dealership I'm talking about both in farm equipment and lawn and garden so The sales staff keeps bugging me to trade my 4310 for a new model, but my comment to them is that I love the tractor, it does everything I want it to do, so I'm happy just as I am. I'm pretty sure that my wife owns every John Deere adult lawn toy known to man, but that's OK she enjoys it. I've been collecting the John Deere STEEL, (the new plastic ones don't thrill me much), two wheel lawn trailers for a while now, and I have all but two of every size they ever built, most of them have never saw daylight let alone be used. They will probably never be worth half what I paid for them, but old goffers like me will collect most anything I guess. Nuff from me. Frank.

Dja; I'm quite sure that I had the same grapple you are talking about on a Deere loader on a 7000 series tractor. When I looked at the grapple at a dealership lot it was on a 500 series loader on a 5000 series tractor. I used it to clean brush, rolls of old fence wire, rocks, you name it when we cleared some old fencerows. If this is the same model you are looking at it had about five or six round teeth about 1 1/2 in. ch diamater about ten to twelve inches long. If the big nut that holds the tooth in gets loose you will break the tooth, so do check them they will work loose. I'd score it a nine on one to ten scale, real nice untt. Frank.
