Murf; I like your idea on the opposed spring loaded planks, I had a somewhat similar idea in mind but I think you improved a bit on my design.
KT; Probably 15 yrs. ago I got volunteered to be the head of a crew at our church made up of very capable volunteers from our parish to design, build and contract for an elevator to be installed in our new handicap entrance. It was interesting to do this simply for the learning experience about public passenger elevators. We had to by the rules of the Arch Diosesis (somebody correctly spell it for me, please) get three bids on the elevator. We turned down the two lowest, not by much in favor of a local person who had a good reputation for church and school elevators in our aeria. Yes there are many interlocks and safety devices to check on door closings, overload sensors, on and on, but all for good reason. It has worked almost flawlessly to this day. Little did I realize at that time that today in 2007 I would be one of the primary users of this elevator. A local welder has access to used forklifts of most any quality. I've looked at his typical "Inventory", most have more oil on and under them than is still left in them. They are cheap, yes, but a woodshop and a leaky old forklift just don't mix too well. I also looked into a new systwm incorporating a hydraulic lift, but I just don't want any oil within leaking or spurting distance of some hardwood lumber that is now, Cherry for example pushing six bucks a board foot. Thanks again for all the help, I think i've pretty much decided on the basic design and will stick with the cable wrap hoist I described earlier. Frank.

I'll pass on the experience of a friend of a friend with his corn stove. Bin run corn even at 12-13% moisture didn't work too well for him, it has too many fines,(cracked kernel pieces, weed seeds, dirt, etc.) that caused it to not burn correctly. He solved that by buying a used rotary grain cleaner and running the corn thru it first. Another fellow in the community has a hook up with a small Mom and Pop seed company where he buys their left over seed that is out of germ test for about market price, that way it is clean and already bagged for easy handling. The other complaint from the friend of a friend was the daily refilling of the small corn hopper on the back of the stove, so he is looking into a hopper bin outside with a small stoker coal type auger to automaticly feed the furnace. He has kind of a trapped feeling now. he put the furnace in with the anticipation of paying 2 bucks or less for the corn, the furnce was pricey and with 3-4 dollar corn the resale on it is zip. n Now he is considering the outside hopper bin deal, so his economies have long since went well past the cost of LP. Just pasing on what I've been told. Frank.

I'm wondering why you would disk it this fall after you mouldboard plow it. Disking it this fall will acomplish two things, it will recompact the soil, and create a level fine soil surface that will be highly subject to overwinter wind erosion. Leave it rough and mother nature will do ten times more good than a disk will. Next spring try a tooth type implement such as a spring tooth harrow instead, and use a disk only as a last resort if the spring tooth clogs with trash. Maybe your soil types are enough differnt than here, but in flat, black Iowa ground we never follow the plow with anything after fall plowing, it just creates a perfect environment for wind erosion. Ask a neighboring farmer who seems to show a successfull pattern of tillage methods and grows a good crop for a bit of advice. Frank.

Harvey has it right. Long as you are inside out of the sun and rain a bit of oil on the cylinder rods is fine. A bigger issue over time is the sun destroying the hydraulic hoses. It happens slowly so you really never notice it till all of a sudden they go bad. Frank.

Blueman: You don't say if the tractor is a gasoline or diesel engine. If it is a gas your symptoms usually indicate a weak spark that won't fire under highre cylinder pressures of load. Check the spark plugs, if they are the right plug and appear good, then work your way back to the distributor, etc., something will show up. Diesels seldom develop a "Miss", unlesss an individual injector goes bad, they either run weak or just stop. 9 times out of ten if a diesel runs slow or weak the fuel filters are to blame. Frank.

EW; I've gotta admit I haven't bought any DeWalt lately, I'm just kinda going by the chatter I hear around the cafe at noon. As you said their plastic look and style doesn't give you the heavy duty look either. I've always kinda judged tools not only by how long they last but how long you can keep using it till it gets too hot to hang onto. We've got a couple old Bosch random orbit sanders in the wood shop that are kinda like the rabbit on the TV that just keep going and going, and they never get too hot to hold. Frank.

EW; No, never owned one but was around them some. It was kind of a late 60's early 70's thing that was kind of a flash in the pan. As I remember the ability to control the correct amount of propane and the proper time to inject it into the airstream was tne biggest problem. In those days all the controls were mechanical so failure and fine truning was a problem. This was in the era of the M and W Gear Co. Gibson City, Ill. selling turbo kits for 4020's faster than they could build them, but they had problems too, like more heat than the cooling system was designed to handle, oil temp's too high, etc. Maybe it's time to try it again only todays electronics could likely give more precise metering than was mechanicaly possible. Guys; I'm sorry but I read it to mean that his speed increased when he dissengaged the FWA. If the speed dropped then yes the 15ft. I beam was a big load. Frank.

Mobil; I'm sure you mean the caster wheel tires on the Land Pride. I had the same problem, if you lowered the mower while moving the tires would just roll off the rins being they were usuallly crossways of your direction of travel when they hit the ground. I don't know if hard rubber tires are available or not, but tubes will solve your problem for lots less money. This has been several years ago but I got the tubes from a Fleet Farm Store for less than ten bucks apiece. I'm afraid your biggest challenge is the slime you have in the tires now. I don't know if you can put the tubes in and just leave the slime in the tire or whether you'll have to clean them out. Better not wear your Sunday best when you do it. Frank.

Murf; Another turf queation for "Murf from Turf". We have had some nice comments on both the newly seeded part and the reseeded part of our lawn all this from following your advice. Now that winter is likely soon coming, should I stop mowing the new seeding or keep it mowed short? We have had plenty of rain and the temps. are staying above nornal so far. You said you would bear no responsibility for any extra lawnmower expense, but maybe you would like to make a guest appearance to drive the second mower I had to buy to keep ahead of the every fourth day mowing scheduel this summer. One of our Granddaughters overheard me telling the Mrs. about the advice from "Murf" so she said, Oh, he must be "Murf from Turf". Frank.

Murf; If it weren't so limp in horsepower my 1947 Cub Farmall might make that tiller work, their PTO ran backwards at engine RPM. I don't remember the shaft size or the number of splines, but odd as a three dollar bill.

You mention that you cleaned and flushed the radiator. The pour in radiator flush treatments just don't clean the core like having it taken apart at a radiator shop and having the core "Rodded", (In other words mechanicly clearing each core tube with a rod). Likely what is hapening is the core being partially blocked is restrictinmg the flow to the point that your lower hose is collapsing at full RPM. Factory lower hoses have a spring on the inside to prevent this, perhaps a replacement hose was put on prior to you buying the tractor that doesn't have the spring also. I had the identical experience with a used 4850, this all sounds real fimmiliar. Frank.

Joel; First off please point out to me any statment I made on this thread that the windmills are owned by big oil companies. Second, the website you refer to has a first line that states that the cost to produce wind enegy has dropped by more thn 80% in the past 20 years, surely you find some fault in that too. Third, you must live a miserable life of never stop worring about someone else making more money than you do. that is the drift I get from all your writings. Fourth, My Dad always said, "Never waste your time arguing with someone for who's opinion you have no respect" I think you get my point. Frank.

Steve; I'm sure that every region of the country has a spot or two that holds a special place in peoples hearts who grew up there. I grew up and we made our living as "Flatlanders" south of the aeria we speak of, but after having a place on the Turkey for probably 15? yrs. you just can't leave, it gets in your blood. My florida home cousin just don't get it tho, she just shook her head and walked away. You keep ketchin dem der big flatheads, OK, you betcha now, and pass me more of dem curds. Frank.

I don't use a chainsaw real often, but when I do I want the thing to start. I bought a new Mccullogh in the 70's, a good saw, kinda heavy by today's standards, but with regular service it started like a champ till I loaned it to the WRONG relative. There is a real strong Sthil dealer in a nearby town whom I had heard had a good service dept., so after I got over the WRONG relative thing I just junked the old Mccullogh and bought a Sthil. I don't remember what model it is but it STARTS. I probanbly don't put 5 hours on it in two years, but I take it to the dealer every other fall, have them tune it up, sharpen, etc. I'm sure ther are other brands just a good, but having a good dealer with a good service dept. keeps me happy. I've always been kind of a tool collector and have some kind of pricey things around the shop that too many of the wrong type of people know about and are always wanting to borrow. I've had some bad experiences loaning tools in the past so after the chainsaw loaning deal we now have a hard and fast rule here about loaning anything more high tech than a sledge hammer. The rule states. "If God himself wants to borrow the chainsaw or any other tool, he can borrow it, all others need not apply". Happy chainsawing. Frank.

KW, No I don't know the weight of either pickup. Mine is the last of the old design 07 Silverado, so their new series 07's likely have a lighter weight by the methods you describe. A friend of mine has the new design 07 with the engine that shuts off part of the cylinders under light load. He has never bragged or complained about his mileage, so I really don't have any feedback. One of his main concerns when buying a new pickup is to have the heaviest duty four door with every possible bell and whistle that Chevy can come up with, so he is hauling around a lot of power consuming do dads that I don't have, or even want, mine still has crank windows, but it gets me there just fine anyhow. Old Henry and Mr. Ferguson were pretty sharp fellows, no body has really improved too much on their basic mechanical principles. An interesting note on Henry Ford. My wife's Grandfather worked for Henry Ford in I have no idea what year. What ever Grandpad did for Henry he knew the man personally, I've heard Grandpa remark about what a genius Henry was, but also that he was the hardest man to work for that he ever knew. Frank.

AZ5CO; I agree screws are far and above nails, they just don't seem to ever work loose. We've always nailed or screwed on top of the rib, it just looked like it was more correct. The other point I wanted to bring up is that we have did as you did in the past with 2X3's laid crossways of the rafters on top of the old shingles with no plastic under the steel. Now I've been hearing stories about doing as we and you did 25 years ago and now the condesation melting off the unndeside of the steel during the winter is rotting the crossways 2X3's. Now they want a sheet of plastic between the nailers and the steel so the condensation can run down under the steel to the eaves. Frank.
