Joe; I have no idea of your age group, so if you did'nt live thru the early 60's and weren't around agriculture then I'll give you a bit of a rundown on turbos. If you have heard bad things about them then the stories probably originated back then. I'll use the 4020 John Deree as an example, they came out of the factory with about 95 horsepower using a non turbo diesel engine. Farmers were hungry for more power so short line companys like M and W Gear Co. started selling turbo kits for the 4020 and many other makes of tractors, they sold like hotcakes. You could easily get 120-130 horsepower out of the 4020. Problem was more air along with more fuel to produce the extra power combined to produce more heat. The cooling system wasn't designed to hadle the extra heat, the 4020 only held 8 quarts of engine oil, too much heat for too little oil. You'll still se an occasional 4020 with an ad on deep cast aluminum ribbed oil pan that held more oil. Most of them really did hold up quite well, manny of them are still running today. Todays engines with factory turbos are designed to handle the heat and highjer pressures turbo's produce.In the days before tractor cabs I used to enjoy the whine of a turbo under load, kinda fascinating. Harvey; Thanks for your input. the need for single and three phase power will not be needed at the same time. There are only three or four three phase machines I need to power. The single phase in the shop will be supplied by conventional wiring comming off the utility lines, so the generator need not produce both phases at the same time. None of the three phae machines will be hard wired into anything, just powered by a super heavy drop cord system. Thanks. Frank.

Broken; I'm sure you have did your financial homework on the Gehl. I almost had this happen to me once on a small piece of equipment where some body was going to pay off somebody who was going to pay the bank, etc., EXCEPT there was another lein held by another financial firm whom the said "Owner" of the machine had also commited this machine as collateral for a loan on some farmland, etc., etc.. I really never knew who ever ended up with the machine or who got paid off, but was I glad I did'nt get involved. Anyhow you seem like too nice a guy to end up in a mess like this, check this guy out at the recorders office, all recorded notes are public information. Frank.

Art; We are pretty fortunate right here, we have been off and on with the power since last Saturday, so we are getting by Ok. Another 20 miles west of us people are still waiting to be reconnected. We drove over thru there on Wednesday, it is just unbelievable to drive at least a mile before even one power pole is still standing, and this goes on for quite a way. One county REC just west of us had over 600 poles to replace. Haven't bought a standby generator yet, still in the head scratching stage of purchseing something. Nearly a total white out as I look out right now. Spring is just around the corner but I think we missed the corner so far. Frank.

sesails; I'll have to agree with you that Bush Hog has a good reputation in the equipment field, they have been around a long time. And also I have to agree with Art, the Kubota backhoe was designed to be mounted on your tractor thru a subframe that spreads the load and the stresses a backhoe can produce so as not to damage the frame of your tractor. Three point hitches just weren't designed to handle the type of load that a backhoe can create. I have a model 48 Deere backhoe that mounts on my 4310 in basicly the same design manner as Kubota uses. I'm not dead positive, but I think that the Kubota subframe like the Deere subframe stays on the tractor while the backhoe is off. Mounting is pretty simple long as the tractor and the backhoe are on a pretty level surface, a cement floor works great. Enjoy your machines. Frank.

I've done this in the past with a home made three point rig, like was said repeated passes are about the only way to get it deep enough. Rocks and tree roots can be a real challenge too. the last few times I've just used a narrow hoe bucket where any rocks or roots are a challenge. Most any rental center have nice chin type trenchers that only cut a narrow slot too. Best of luck. Frank.

EW; Welcome back to the land of fewer poisonus snakes, only 6 months of bugs, and possibly a Cagin food withdraul. It would be a treat to someday meet the folks on TP face to face just to see if guys like you are really 6 ft. 2 in. tall 175 lbs. all muscle, full head of hair, like I imagine ALL of you to look like. But realisticly knowing you by reading your posts, you are fully capable of going most anywhere and being able to use your tallents to make a decent living. Nuruady; Seems like after the smoke cleared that it cost me dinner out, or maybe I got her a new #14 aluminum scoop shovel, we fed a lot of hogs at that time. wny770; Are you using common no. 2 furnace fuel without any additives to control jelling? Diesel fuel and furnace oil are the same basic thing except diesel fuel has an additive package to help lube your fuel injection systen and nothing to prebent jelling. No doubt the fuel is jelling and clogging your fuel filters. I think I would drain the fuel tank, change the filters, then put in diesel fuel with some Power service to prevent jelling and your troubles will go away. Best of luck. Frank.

If you can see the PS unit from all angles it surely will have a name and part or serial number somewhere on it to help you identify it. Most any farm tractor dealership or hydraulic repair shop will have a way to figure out who made it and parts availability. Bsat of luck. Frank.

Hettric; Thank you for the reply. Never being too well educated in electrical things, I knew about converers but not much. I don't remember the brand he sells but a local motor shop owner has been a good friend of mine for years thru our addiction to old Farmall tractors. He gave me a crash course on converters, the difference between rotary and static, size needed, etc. So now the plans have changed, I am somehow going to make room for the three phase machines I have and use a 40K rotary converter. The Bridgeport mill I would most like to have is hard to find in single phase, so another hurtle cleared. Enjoy your day. Frank.

Been pretty lucky here far as colds and flu, we take the shots, some say they work some say otherwise. One neighbor lady got deathly sick from her flu shot,(they think). January 29th. I fell on the ice breaking my pelvis, so not so lucky that way. The doctors tell me another 3-4 weeks with a walker. I'm currently suffereing from terminal pickup truck withdrawl. All farmers are required to drive their pickup at least twice a day to go absolutely nowhere, sure hope I survive. Frank.

Murf; Yes I'm not totally negative on ethanol, because it does reduce emmisions. Boosting farm income, yes and no. To the cash grain producer, yes a bonanza if the producer did'nt have it forward contracted at 2.50 and of course you must deliver on a contract, things get ugly real quick if you don't. To the livestock industry, not so great. Cow calf operators who were selling 6-700 pound feeder calves last summer for 1.15 to 1.25 per pound are now lucky to get 75 to 85 cents per pound. 1.25 calves and 4.00 corn don't work. Same with the hog producers, so good for the farmer, yes in some cases, no, for otheres. It will cycle, allways has allways will, calves will stay cheap, corn will go down, money made again on cattle. Enough from me. Frank.

Wayne, I don't have a Ford, but most hydros are pretty similar. Makes me think of a combination of cold oil and perhaps a partially clogged filter on the intake side of the hydro system. Did the previous owner tell you anything about when the last fluid and filter changes were and maybe what type of fluid he used. I'm a firm believer in using only flids and filters recommended by the owners manual in any machine. Enjoy your new purchase. Frank.

Got the spring sale flier from the local Deere dealer a couple days ago. There showing a new model Gator, the XUV. Supposed to have more power. 30 MPH top speed, and a different rear suspension. I might be temped to trade my HPX if they would have power steering on the new one. The steering on an HPX is kinda Gorilla type. Anybody seen one yet?

Harvey; Before you get concerned about a teardown have you established if it is water or coolant. Let it sit for a few hours to completely cool down, loosen the oil pan drain plug, unscrew it till just a thread or two are holding it in. Water or coolant will allways come out before any oil gets by the threads. Catch what ever comes out before any oil comes in a cup or something so you can get it out in the daylight to determine exactly what it is. If it is only water,it normally isn't a problem, short runs in cold weather generate lots of condensation inside an engine. Unless it is a real bunch of water a couple hours of fully warmed up operation will evaporate it out. If it is coolant, then that's a problem, don't know if they use an oil cooler but they are kind of notorus for leaks, head gasket, etc, you just search till you find it. Best of luck. Frank.

Seems to be the consensus around the board that turfs are about the best on snow, but switching from R-4's to turfs will probably cost you a bundle unless you find someone with an identical tractor wanting to trade. In most cases you not only buy the tires but the rims too. My thoughts on filled tires are a bit negative from past experiences with flats, etc. so that's up to you, but chains are your lowest cost and most effective solution. Leave the front's alone, you'll tear up your tie rod ends if the chains get a bit loose and sloppy, the rears will be plenty good enough to solve your problem. Keep warm. Frank.
