I really wish someone would come up with a trailer brake system that would be more dependable than either electric or hydraulic surge systems. Yes you'll need brakes on both axles of one sort or the other. I think my problem is that I don't use the trailers often enough to keep things freed up plus half or more of my trailer miles are on dusty gravel roads. Trailer brakes have allways been a frustration to me. I could use some advice too. Frank.

I really haven't hunted game since I was a kid, used to hunt pheasants and rabbits. All I really ever shot was a 20 ga. and a common 22 rifle, so I'm a long ways out of touch with modern hunting. We have several different deer hunting seasons here now, bow, black powder, teen shotgun, adult shotgun, etc. I think the adult shotgun opened yesterday. I think they shoot rifled slugs, but whatever they are they must be quite loud at close range, you can hear them for a couple miles. Happy hunting. Frank.

mb22; I don't know how the PTO works on a Kubota, but Deere does have one real nice feature on their 4000 series PTO. When the engine is off you can turn the PTO shaft on the tractor a parital turn makinfg lining up the splines much easier. Frank.

Dmnsmith; Thank goodness you bought a real popular tractor that holds it's resale well. Spring might be a little better time of the year to sell, but like Archdean said advertise and sell locally to someone you can find back in case of a hitch. I really don't have a clue what the asking price should be, but at a fair price it will sell. Enjoy your day. Frank.

Again let me thank everyone for their thoughts of kindness. All of you like the community we live in have been so good to us in our time of sorrow. Yes it will take some time to get used to being without Dad, but he's now enjoying the reward we all hope to attain someday. Frank and Lucile.

Sandroost; Like was said that's a lot of grass to mow. If the grass is of suitable quality for hay I'd look into selling it to someone to bale for hay and turn your mowing problem into a source of income. You'll have to buy a pretty expensive mower to do that much mowing in a short time every week plus some weekends it will be raining and not fit to mow. Best of luck. Frank.

I'll sure have to agree with being in a nice warm cab. There are lots of good plows made, I bought a Wastern with the angling kit mainly because there is a good dealer within five miles. It almost makes plowing snow fun. I usually start out long before dawn to plow out some folks who have to get to work. I never have charged anyone for plowing but somehow warm cookies show up in a day or two. Frank.

Altho I've never used it flyash from coal fired powerplants has become another source for fill in our aeria, it seems to pack well and is less expensive than lime chips, (the most common fill here). Your comment on waiting till a later date with the concreet is by far the best thing you can do, that lets the fill settle on it's own, the longer the wait the better. Frank.

I use a Landpride Model 2572 on my 4410, it has seven teeth and cuts six ft. wide. As has been said before if you don't already have a rear hydraulic outlet you'll need one for a hydraulic top link. I've moved lots of dirt with this rig and don't have a hydraulic top link and really never thought I needed one. So my thoughts are, there are lots of good box blades built, but my choice for quality in most any three point equipment has allways been Landpride. Why not just get the boxblade first before spending the money on the hyd. toplink just to see if you really think you need one, you can allways add it later. Frank.

jd2210; You're right in the cost, but yes I allready had twelve weights so I only bought two more. Weight is weight no matter what it is, but I just thought they would look nice and kinda matched the scale of the tractor. Frank.

I had a 4300 that traded in on the 4310. The 4300 was a good tractor, the dealer gave me top dollar for it on the trade, he has a waiting list for nice ones. The 4310 has lots of small refinments over ther 4300 that just make it a lot nicer tractor, better joy stick, tilt wheel, PTO and 4 WD controls are much better. Someone made the comment that the 4310 and 4410 share the same engine. No they are different the 4410 is a larger displacement block. Frank.

BigBru: The old poles that were boiled in creosote before creosote was restriced by the Gvt. seem to never rot off. I've got an old corrgated tin shed on the farm that must have been built in the late 50's with genuine creosote poles that still don't show a sign of rot. I really don't know for sure what the preservative was that was used after that, but I put up a pole shed in 1969 using the "New" square poles with the then legal preservative, and within 20 yrs most every pole you could kick the toe of your boot thru at ground level. We were asked to build some playground equipment a few years ago at the shop, but after checking codes found that the "Green" poles and lumber were not legal to use because of arsenic in the preservative. Ben; I also drive an 04 chevy 1500 equiped identical to yours. standard cab, long box, bare bones, 4X4 work truck. I do have a gooseneck trailer that I pull, but probably haven't pulled it 500 miles this year yet. If I run short of power I just shift down and get there when I get there. I only checked it once on a day long drive without the trailer, and yes an amazing 20.5 MPG. Diesels are fine if you just like having a diesel or if you are hauling big loads day after day stacking up a quarter million miles before trade or salvage time. I just happened to notice when passing a truck stop yesterday Diesel was 2.09 and super unleaded was 1.89 Frank.

Anytime you stray from major brands in most anything for the sake of saving on the purchase price you generally end up spending just as much as a popular brand would have cost. The scant dealer network of little known brands and even the stability of the manufacturer may haunt you trying to find service or parts, plus trade in or resale values of the litte known brands isn't very good. I'd really hate to see you take a new tractor and start shimming up the relief pressures. I've also seen some talk on changing the pump on a 4310 to match the HP of a 4410. Every system of any brand or size tractor is designed to stand certian loads and pressures with some designed in overload capacity. Any time you modify any part of the tractor for more performance then you've crossed into the overload capacity and then will excced that limit till the weakest link fails. I'd advise giving a 4310 a strong look, not only for the increased abilitys, but also for the creature comforts. If going to a 4310 strains the budget then maybe buy just the tractor and some basic attachments now and with as many 4000 series tractors and attachments as have been sold ther will be good used loaders, backhoes, etc. around for years to fit the trsctor. I've got both a 4310 and a 4410 and can't think of any reason I'd need or want anything better, they've did everything I've asked of them and are truly a pleasure to operate. Grinder; Yes this building is kept heated 24/7 at about 55 degrees. It has allways been used as an assembly room for furniture. 90% of our glue work is done with yellow glue and most of the rest with hide glue, both seem to set up fine but just somewhat slower than in the summer. We seem to allways be going from the heated to the unheated parts of the shop, so around 55 seems to be a comfortable temp for a light jacket and the same jacket being adequate for short periods on the cold side. We also use cove heaters in our finish room built basicly the same as the assembly room only it has a insulated wood floor, only we go a couple steps farther with it. it is also humidity controlled and heated to about 75 degrees but only when doing actual finish work. Between jobs we back the heat off to just above freezing, it also has a filtered air exchange system that changes the total volume of the air in the building about two and a half times a minute. This may sound like some flashy high tech operation, but 90 percent of these heat and air exchange systems are home made, but they've worked fine for years. As for the floor, I seem to remember that we put about twice as much re-bar in as was called for, so maybe that's why it held up. Thanks for your intrest. Frank.

Cornstalks are far from a free source of heat. During favorable weather in the fall stalks can be baled dry enough to burn. But a look at the true cost of the stover (stalks) after the cost of the big furnace, hiring the baling done and transport to a dry shelter is in the nutrient removal from the soil contained in the stover that must be replaced by fertilizer to the tune of about 35 dollars per acre for the stover only from corn that produced 200 bushels per acre. Stover baled for bedding is eventually returned to the soil in the manure spreader, so the nutrient value is returned to where it came from. In the mid seventys the Stormor bin and grain drier company had a stover burning furnace that could be adapted to a grain drier, it was a failure because of the above reasons, LP gas was a much cheaper source of heat then and even with todays LP costs burning stover would still cost more than LP. With todays electricity and LP costs it runs roughly twenty dollars per acre for drying 200 bu. pr acre corn. Just a farmers point of view. Frank.
