A good example of how a manufacturer can manipulate figures to show more HP is with the N/H TC series. I was looking at the TC25D rated at 25HP. The 29D was carrying a rebate and was only $400 more. The engine specs were identical, except you had to run the 29 at several hundred more RPM to achieve rated HP. The dealer told me the fuel delivery had been increased and that was the only real difference between the two engines (except rated HP). They highly recommended that model for the 72" cutter so I bought it, but never did run a 25D to see if there was a noticeable difference in power.

I run detergent oil in my D12 but the engine was taken partially down in the 60's with new valves and a good cleanup. I put detergent oil in a very old riding mower once due to lack of the other and killed all the mosquitoes in the woods around the creek at my previous residence :> Seems to me the Agway non-detergent brand is called utility oil or something like that.

As long as you don't expect me to pay your medical bills or support your family when you are incapacitated, I don't care what you ride, wear, drive, sleep with or do for a living. That is (or was) America in a nut shell. I have noticed that "foot in the tire" syndrome on the three wheelers, but I am not experienced with them so it was probably my own fault, much better on two wheels.

I adjusted the switch on my tc29 because the cruise control would not work when it was delivered. If that is the same one, it is under the right hand floorboard next to the brake pedal shafts. You can see the wiring leading to it. Simple to adjust, you will see how when you look at it.

I like a six if it is matched to the vehicle, such as the wife's SUV. The only objection I have is the mileage in the few I have owned in trucks over the years was no better than the V-8 and sometimes worse. The rig you drive is certainly more economical to buy and trade every two years, I like the standard cab myself. I suppose the new sixes of today perform closer to that old small block V-8 of yesteryear as well.

I have never been a good finish carpenter. I can rough a deck or perform as a helper when installing windows, doors etc...but do not have the desire to attempt something I know nothing about. Give me a boat, an engine, some wiring, plumbing or just about anything else around the house and I am gung-ho. If I don't have any luck with the estimates, I may hire a fellow worker that carpenters on the side(if he is willing) and serve as his helper for the project.

Siding costs seems high to me

Perhaps a less expensive solution, the older Kubota B7100 tractors that were updated several years ago could do it all. The only drawback to them other than lower HP was the loader was not a quick attach type, that is why I did not use one on mine. A guy up the road from me has one set up that way and it does not seem to impede his mowing.You could probably pick up one of those machines for considerably less $$ if you are trying to reduce cost.

That is not an uncommon malady for machinery, lack of use is sometimes worse than using it regularly. I engage all of my PTO's and transfer cases on all of my equipment regularly as well as spray all linkages when I am performing maintenance.

That is a loaded question with other factors involved ie; loaded tires, weight of blower etc...but I would say that would be enough as long as it is in the up position when you lift the blade up more than a few inches, but would be a bit inconvenient using the machine that way. I used an old back-blade that weighs quite a bit to begin with and caries the weight further back, in essence shifting the weight from the front to the back. When using the back blade, I carried the front loader-blade just a few inches from the ground to avoid problems.

I just haven't heard of any recent transmission problems, at least any more so than the other brands. The early automatics were having seal problems that were causing failure but that was eliminated with upgrades through the years. The new (2003)automatics are totally different animals, so time will tell just like any new offering. The truck I saw had a six speed floor mounted shifter that hearkened back to Road Runner days, I doubt you will tear that up.

Answers are all over the place, as they should be. As was previously stated here, it all depends on how hard he will be using the 5' cutter. That will hold true with any machinery, even if well matched you can go where you should not go and break something or hurt someone. Much like Dirty Harry says, "a man has to know his limitations".

When I looked to upgrade my B7100, I was told by the J/D dealer to the south that a 4100 or 755 would be just the ticket, no limitations with the 5' hog. The dealer to the west told me I needed an 855 at a minimum. I tried to go with the dealer to the west and when he found out I had a Kubota to trade that had been purchased at a nearby dealer a couple years prior, he got mad at me and began beating me up on the phone, then stated that he would not do business with me, quite an experience.

Back to the subject, I bought the 4100 from the southern dealer only to trade up for a more powerful machine two years later. My hogging includes tall field grass, small trees, brush and anything else the tractor will run over. In my experience, the 4100 is too light to carry that 5' hog safely without the loader or front weights on it. Not an issue but the buyer should know that. If he hasn't purchased the cutter as of yet, perhaps he would be willing to look at a 4' if the deal on the tractor is good! Just a thought.

Merry Christmas, and thanks for the feedback guys. I have my dealer on the case. (I dont want to bug them to much as they have been real good to me so far). So, if they come back to me and say I'm
"SOL" than I will have to take Harveys advice and cry to John Deere.. The fact of the matter is that I bought the rig used and it warranty was over a few months ago im sure. Thus, I will have to cry an awful lot. But I can try and pull the "loyalty card" with them as I have owned Deere equipment for several years.

At any rate, did anyone figure out if the year "1999" matches the serial number? I still never verified that.

I would try and fix it, how bad did it crack? Did you do it dismounting the whole loader? I had that assembly slide into my hood on the tc29d and fortunately was able to wedge it away with a 2x4 without much more than a scratch. That is a tricky mounting system, I learned to plant the bucket face down and make certain it was on heavy planking to prevent it moving when reattaching.

I was going to switch to full synthetic this fall in both truck and tractor but after reading and hearing about possible ring seating problems, I went with semi-synthetic until I chalk up a few more miles/hours. Who knows for sure what it best.

A couple of years ago I visited a dealer that happened to be setting up a TC29D for a nearby village. He had installed a N/H cab (very nice) with wiper and hot water heater/blower. That cab was toasty, I got in it to check it out when it was running outside his shop. They had mounted a N/H snow blower on the front as well, big bucks.

You know Tom, it was an impromptu four day vacation to unwind between end of year review writing/interviews and it turned into something you would see in a comedy movie. To top it off, I came down with a virus on Friday that is still with me. My theory is that once you pass 50, every day you are vertical is a good day, so I try to keep it all in perspective!

Same thing, my TC29D would blow the fuse as soon as you hit the glow plugs. One was shorted out.

Thanks Mark, I will check with State Farm. The NTSB has only two brake problems listed for the '98 model 1500, I checked that already. I am going to speak to the business owner after the truck is out of the dealership and get his permission to post with NTSB regarding his vehicle. If the problem is discovered, I will list the repair made as well as details of the symptoms for others to reference.
