Thank you all for the advice. I think I will lower the pressure back to my summer specs, which is 12rr and 20frt and see what the footprint looks like with the loader on. It appeared to be good contact, with full tread width in the snow last night. I did check for that. I have chains that may fit the front tires. Will drive line damage occur by having them only on the front? The studding idea sounds good but may not work so well for mowing, I don't know.

The tractor manual calls for 7.5 gal. capacity. I assume that means to fill the supply sump of the transmission/hyd. as well as any the hyd. trans. may hold by itself. I doubt implements are figured in here. The capacity is found in the maint. section of the manual for servicing the filters ect.. I called around for the oil today and the N/H dealers don't carry it. Neither does the parts store. I found a garage that sells the product and he can order it in for 80-120 dollars a 5 gal pail. I can't find the ISO rating he is looking for, so I am not sure what to do. The N/H oil is 5w-30 I believe for their 200 petro. oil product. Nothing in the operators manual. Any ideas. Cutter

I had thought of that myself, but if the thing is no deal I will buy a 7'. Why go through the time and aggravation of cutting, grinding and painting unless it is a couple hundred in savings. Froom what I have read here, sounds like it may be too large for a tc29 and not THAT great a buy.

Larry, I did not have a problem with smoking. Try calling J/D yourself, I can't believe they expect you to live with it. I think my TC29 smokes more than my J/D did upon startup. A guy up the road works as a mechanic for one of the largest J/D dealers in the country. He claims they have had transmission failures on that model as well, take it for what it is worth. Good luck.

I have to throw my two cents in here. The busloads of people trucked in (and the street bums given cigarettes for their votes) by the Democrats to vote for the Santa promising the most for doing the least, failed to read the fine print on Santa's list. To reap the benefits of our Democracy, you must fully participate in it. That includes casting a legal, properly executed ballot! One that you should have at least been somewhat familiar with before you went to the polls. One that was designed by the Democrats in charge there and sampled all over the place. All these excuses, lies, lawyers, court actions and press releases from the Democrats just firms up my belief that Gore possesses the same integrity level as Slick Willie Clinton. What we need are fewer laws, lawyers and lawsuits. Not more. Nor do we need a group of appointed judges deciding the presidency. If the vote is not accepted, it should be settled by the elected officials in the State of Florida and the chips fall where they may. I still love my country more than any other and don't believe we need Hillary Clinton to come to our rescue by re-writing The Constitution. I have said my piece, I will now resume my non-political tractor talk. By the way, ask the Chinese how much selection they have in compact tractors under their socialist/communist leadership similar to the Democrat's philosophy. OK...I'M DONE!

Frank, It sounds as though you have an ideal tow rig. The trailer brakes are obviously electric and probably were unhooked when they rusted and malfunctioned. Do yourself a favor, rebuild the brakes and install an adjustable electric brake unit inside your truck. I am sure on a nice dry road your rig will stop with that 3500# trailer/tractor/mower behind it, but try it on a freshly wetted surface after a hot day or on snow and ice. You will probably see your tractor and mower passing you. The cab mounted brake unit will allow you to adjust the stopping ability of the trailer brakes or use just them to pull you out of a skid. They are GREAT for icy conditions! Happy motoring, Cutter.

This is probably opening Pandora's Box, but what machine(compact fwd) in the opinion of board participants, has proven to be the leader in resale value when one, two or three years old? I have owned several brands and each time I go to trade, I am told this one doesn't hold it's value as well as that one. "This one" always seems to be the one I own at the time. I have been unable to find a "blue book" similar to that available for cars. Maybe they are so close it really doesn't matter after they are a few years old, but it seems to if you trade more often.

Drew, If you have since spoken with the only previous owner and the machine was maintained by the dealer, then the appearance is the only apparent fault. I would question the hours. Mowing three acres plus the loader work adds up to more than 50hrs a year. I mow about the same size lot with a 72" deck and rack up around 100hrs per year in just lawn care. I wouldn't accuse anyone of anything, perhaps a meter malfunction exhisted, but keep that in mind. Also, I seriously doubt he will get 14k in the spring with a paint job, it is still almost thirteen years old. There are two 4100's in the classifieds on this board, one is two years old for 13k. Hope this helps.

Mark, I had some initial problems with my tc29d. Most of it was taken care of immediately by the dealer, one item I had to call the factory to get satisfaction (the gear box on the mower deck was bad out of the box and I wanted it replaced). I just noticed the cruise control doesn't work, but I have never tried it so it probably never did. I think the U.S. assembly plant is cranking them out so fast, some of the QC is being overlooked, something apparent to a lesser extent on the JD. Otherwise it is a very sturdy, well thought out machine. I owned a 4100 and the machine was underpowered for some jobs, however the deere implement change ie: belly deck and loader seemed easier.. There are a ton of postings re: 4000 series problems, albeit the factory is now admitting to them and making repairs. Did you check out a Kubota as well? I owned one of them and never had a problem. Yes Gary, I tend to agree with you on the synthetic oil. I just checked the manual again and the N/H is 300hrs for the change, two filters but only one sump. I remember the 500hr. interval from my J/D. I still am not sure if that N/H oil the dealer claims is "semi-Synthetic", is any different than their regular 134 oil. I will do some checking on that.

Tan, I am no expert with tractor mounted blowers, but my experience with walk behinds is that 1. you are not at an appropriate rpm 2. the stuf was just too wet to move with your machine and make it through the described small chute. Is it a single stage or two stage with a seperate fan for the chute? That could make a difference in heavy, wet material. Hope this helps.

Jim, I would suggest you check the posts on this board for the last six months re: the JD scuffing problem. There remains hours of reading. It has all been said and the fix is posted as well. Sounds as though you have the bad front axle. Good luck. Cutter

Was recently quoted $2500 to trade 2000 tc29d w/loader,mower,ss,70hrs for a Kubota 2910 simularly equiped. Dealer says he sells mine new for 21,000 and the 2910 for 19,000. Any opinions as to this being a good or bad deal? The tc29d has turned out to be larger and heavier than I need. I thought $1000 difference would be fair. My trade is better than when it was delivered. Thanks.

I have a tc29d w/ss and it is the best feature of the machine. I will caution you however, the rust may be on the new one you order in if you live in the salt belt, mine was built in Jan. and delivered in March with rust. You may want to check on a different brand mower as well, if you are buying one. The N/H deck is very heavy with only minimal support with four very narrow gauge wheels that allow it to sink into the soil if it is the least bit damp. After I bought mine I had an opportunity to use a Bush Hog model finish mower and it had large flotation wheels that did a great job. Same goes for the Woods models I have looked at. Also, the components of the SS require the tractor to be lifted up to gain clearance for removal of the belly deck. Do your self a favor, go to the N/H distribution center with your salesman and pick out a tractor to be delivered to the dealer, ensuring a clean machine. Good luck.

Still looking for a snow blade for my tc29. Anybody have experience with after market implements? I would like to remove the bucket from the loader frame and fasten a fixed angle snow blade in place. I remember my grandfather had done this on a Ford tractor and it worked well, but that was many years ago and I am not sure where it may have been purchased. Perhaps modifying a Myers type truck blade would work?

Is anyone aware of a simple and reasonably priced snow blade setup that could be mounted on the loader arms in place of the bucket on a N/H tc29 tractor? Any experience with rear mounted snow blowers or other implements that facilitate cleaning a 200' long stone driveway in the North East. The rear blade has been a bit of a pain on other tractors I have owned, it seems they pull just so much snow then fill the area between the blade and tractor necessitating stopping and moving the load with the loader or snow plow. Thanks!

Duane, I owned a 4100 for two years. The only problem I encountered was a hood that vibrated loudly above low idle. I felt the loader was a bit under powered for all but light use, say for moving snow. The mower deck does not have a method to pin it up when using the three point hitch, which means you are dragging the belly deck through crap unless you remove it each time you need to run other implements. I also noticed the hydro was quite stiff. It wasn't a linkage problem, I lubed the heck out of that to be sure. It did appear to be more tractor than the Kubota 2100. The only REAL problem I discovered, was trying to get a decent trade value at the JD dealer where it was purchased. I ended up with much better pricing from orange and blue, and it was the ergonomics that swayed my purchase in the end. Good luck.
