Markus, spend two bucks at your local auto store for a twelve volt test light and you will be able to see what you have back there. If you want them to come on with your headlights, splice into the tail light circuit. I switched mine independantly, utilizing an unused plug such as the one you describe.

Glen, I used mine and had no problem w/4wd front loader and rear blade except real heavy wet stuff. It was kept in an unheated insulated garage and started and worked fine, no -20 to test though. A cab would be nice.

My tc29 has just come down with that same symptom. Penetrating oil cured it, however I had the dealer make a note of the problem so the piston can be replaced in the future. A question for you, was I clipped by paying $21.oo for the oil filter and $36.00 for the hyd. filter at the NH dealer? I'm doing my 50hr service and that seemed high. ps.. every Boomer I looked at last winter had that same tilt steering problem, so it IS widespread!!!

The upstate NY volunteer fire co. I belong to is in need of a good used 10 or 12 foot finish mower. We own the land our fire house sits on and operate on a shoestring budget, earning money through fundraisers. The machine we have has seen the course. We will pay a reasonable price or write a receipt for a tax deductable donation. Thanks.

Andy,

On my 4100, the seat switch would only shut the machine down if another sensor was telling it to when the operator left the seat. That meant the pto or the gear selector was not in neutral. I would concentrate on those two. Look for the possibility of the switch having been moved or distanced somehow from the activation point. You may just have to reposition something. If that fails then you had best get your voltage tester out. Good luck.

Randy, I thought I had heard of it happening somewhere else, it was just the cure I missed. I will write NH regarding problem. The zone rep. was no help as always. It has been one thing after another gone wrong on this tractor. I'll just add this to the list.

Jim, one other thing that may interest you. NH DOES make a rear discharge belly mower for the 29. I almost bought one, then changed my mind at the last minute. I had zero experience with one and didn't want to risk that much loot on a guess. I can tell you that it is a very heavy tractor and will sink a bit during wet weather conditions, the front much more so than the rear. We have had one of the wettest springs on record in my area of NY, and I am able to do an acceptable job mowing despite that. The water is spraying from under the tires it is so wet in some spots. Kabota offers the same HP with 700 less pounds. Something to ponder. I wish I had purchased one, (rather than the NH) due to other concerns I have had with mine. Good luck.

I would not begin to try to sway someone away from what they like, as long as it is a reputable brand. I liked my 4100 JD. I also liked the 7100 Kubota I owned. They have different pluses and minuses. Kubota is platformed differently, and runs an extra cylinder on some models compared to other brands. All of their attachments are bullet proof. I chose a NH this time and have had some problems, but I still like the tractor and think the creature comforts are a cut above the rest. Your choice should be what YOU like best, not what someone else favors. Good luck!

I've had my share of problems with a tc29d Danny. You can read the posts on this board. Your shifting into gear hard is normal. All three of my hydro tractors have been that way. If you tap the direction pedal instead of the clutch you will find it will pop right into gear. PTO action is normal as well. Let the clutch out slightly to help the gears align, and then depress it again and engage the unit.

The deck is now fixed. NH would not replace the gear box, but the dealer did on his own. He felt due to the problems I had experienced, it was the right thing to do. HE also sent out a brand new Bush Hog rear mount finish mower for me to use while mine was out of service. Like I said before, the dealer here has made all the diference. NH has called me a couple of times, but really hasn't offered much of anything. They said they were "sorry" for the number of breakdowns. I guess I shouldn't complain, at least they called and showed concern. That is more than some do. They called the dealer, but my issues weren't with him in the first place, they were with NH's area rep. I did notice that the deck was much harder to install than any I have owned. It won't fit under the tractor when equipped with Super Steer. We had to jack the machine up for both installation and removal. Everything is running good now, so time will tell how it holds up. I have been in your shoes twice. First trade was to a B7100 which was a great machine. Then I decided a loader was needed (rather my back decided), and shopped around for a machine with a quick attach feature and enough HP to run my 5' hog. The JD seemed to fit the bill and the dealer swore it was enough machine for the hog. It wasn't, and the rest is history (also felt lack of power for loader use). I priced several brands and they all have some great features. One (competing) dealer mentioned transmission problems on the 4100, and when I checked on this a JD mechanic re-enforced his statement. But that may be a local problem, I have only heard it mentioned a couple of times on this site. That was the deciding factor for me, however. The NH had more creature comforts so that is what I purchased. I figure I lost around 4k during that trade, but had the use of the 4100 for almost two years. I struggled over the choice, and almost went for the 2710. It was a bit less money than the tc29d (and I have had a few problems with the new machine). My reasoning was to cut my losses and get the machine I would be happy with before the 4100 depreciated any further. Also, my old Chalmers is in need of a ring job and the bush hogging has to be done with my compact this year, no more pushing the old machine beyond it's limit. If I had it to do over, I am not sure what my choice would be. I never had a problem with the Kubota, but that may not be true for someone else. Actually, I priced the JD 4200 and 4300 as well, but the dealer in my area was just too pricey. There wasn't a whole lot I didn't like about the Deere. Good luck.

I have that very same setup. The industrials are ok so far. I have mowed twice and it has been extremely wet here. We have had 5" of rain this month. The rear leaves an impression in the grass that vanishes after a day or two, the front have sunk in a bit in VERY wet areas (just to the depth of the tread). I can roll that out when it dries up here. The damage seems to occur when turning sharply. I am not so sure as wet as it has been, that perhaps even a turf would be doing some sinking. The turfs I had on my 4100 were great in the snow but a bit soft for the loader. With the pressure adjusted on the ind. tire so they sit flat on the ground, they ride fine. Ask your dealer to let you try them, and have the option of swapping for turfs if they are not to your liking. That is what I did (mine charged me $100 more for the industrials, he said normally they are $250 more. Somehow I doubt it.) One thing I can tell you for sure, the 72" NH deck gives a very nice looking finish to the lawn. Much better than the 4100 I had. Bottom line is that R4's are a compromise. How fussy are you with your lawn? Turf will do a better job there. Good luck.

Tom, I just purchased a tc29d for many of the reasons listed here. I was swayed away from the Kubota by these features, but have had a few problems that just a few days ago had me thinking I made a serious mistake. I received a call from NH customer service and they seem to be willing to deal with my concerns. I will let you know what happens. I find the machine very operator friendly, more (ergonomically) so than the 4100 I had previously owned. Another feature I like on the NH is the abundance of grease fittings, often missing on other brands. Also, the pto has a mechanical engagement rather than the electric switch some brands use, I think it is more durable. The Deere has some nice features as well. The deck is on and off easier and so are the belt covers (nice for cleaning). I like the front end protection incorporated into the 410 loader frame. Also, the steering brakes are where you can use them on the Deere (the left side). The dealers in my area were too pricey for the 4200. The Kubota speaks for itself. The 7100 I owned was a jewel. The dealer and the customer service, top notch. I would buy another one, and almost did last month. If you are in NY, there is an excellent dealer that is on this site from time to time. His name is Art White. Also, the JD was noiser than the NH, but "appears" to burn a bit cleaner. This site is just great for this type of information. Good luck!

Rick, I recently purchased a tc29 with industrials. My previous machine had turfs with a loader and 60" mower. The turfs were great in the lawn and in snow. The only bad experience with them is that they are made to run at a low pressure and flatten out considerably with a full bucket. I went with the ind. this time because two dealers recommended them. I have the option of a free trade back for turfs if I don't like them in the lawn. Seems they are pretty sure of themselves. Maybe that is your answer. Buy where you can try.
