I have a Farm Pro 2420 (I think). Was a little hard to start but then ok, shredded for about 1 1/2 hours and then I noticed white smoke coming out of stack followed shortly by black smoke and then it died. Where do I start trouble-shooting? Think I blew a head gasket? Was out of oil and water when it stopped but I know it was full when I started it. I charged the battery and it still will not even attempt to turn over. There is no one close that works on this brand so I have to do it myself.<br>

I think there is water in the cylinders of my Farm Pro 2010 series tractor. Can I pull the injectors out to get the water out? I was shredding for about 1 1/2 hours and then white smoke came out of the stack followed by black smoke within seconds. When I checked water and oil it was gone and the tractor will not even try to turn over when I try to start it. No dealers or mechanics that will touch it in the area I live so I have to do it myself.<br>

I had the same problem last year when choosing my tractor. I didn't know about tractor boards at that time so I was really helpless. I just ended up going to local dealers and asking for their advice. One of the dealers offered to come out and look at my property before making any suggestions. He was raised around here and grew up on a farm driving tractors. Once he saw what I was up against he made some very specific recomendations and talked me out of spending money on certain items. I ended up buying from him and have not regretted my decision. He's always available to answer my questions and makes sure I'm happy. I don't know how many dealers are willing to go to that kind of trouble, but this dealer consinders this to be normal.
You have to be comfortable with the tractor and the dealer no matter what color equipment you end up bringing home.

I have a 4300 but it has the same rims and tires as your 4400. I asked the dealer to swap my rears for a wider track but the mechanic told me not to bother since it would only yield a total of 1 1/2" in width. The offset is obviously only 3/4" per wheel and not worth the time and dangers involved. On the other hand the fronts being swapped adds considerably to the width. A note on the fronts though is that the mechanic told me to be careful about bouncing down rutted roads and pounding the front end at high speed because he'd seen one customer tear up the front bearings due to abuse. I also understand that you have faster tire wear with the fronts set wide. On my hilly property I don't drive fast anywhere, and for the extra stability I'm not concerned about the tire wear issue.

I have a small electric Karcher that works well for my needs. I asked the mechanic at the JD dealer about washing it down with a power washer and he said it was fine EXCEPT:
Make sure engine is off if you plan on washing the engine. He said he'd seen rods bent from the smallest amount of water getting through the air cleaner, and indiscriminate use of a power washer can force the water into places it should not go.
He also advised that I re-grease all of the Zirk fittings since the power washer will also displace the grease and start rusting things.

I sent a nasty gram to John Deere via their website. I told them that I was very unhappy, disappointed, and disillusioned with the quality of tractor that was delivered to me. The problems as I see it is not with the design of the tractor, on the contrary I'm very happy with the capabilities of my 4300. What I'm so upset about is the fact that my tractor has already gone back to the dealer with only 18-19 hours on it to fix a list of minor problems, and 1 major problem with the clutch. My dealer, who I've been very happy with, offered the loan of a 4500 until my tractor has been repaired. Unfortunately it's physically too big to go where the work is around here. Not having my new toy makes me mad. Being without a tractor leaves me with only this and one other website to be near tractors. When I read about other peoples disappointment with their JD's it only makes me question my decision, and I hate second guessing myself. Well I received 2 calls from JD today. I was assured that JD is aware of the quality control problems, and that they are seriously doing something about it. I also gave them this website address as. I informed them that there are a lot of bad JD posts located at these sights and that they better respond. Hopefully I made it clear that somebody from JD has to start logging on and posting here. I feel that I made the right choice in buying from John Deere for a myriad of personal reasons. As I stated earlier, the problems with my tractor are minor and once fixed I will be able to pass this tractor on to my kids many years from now along with the property. What I'm upset about is how my tractor, with some very obvious problems, slipped passed their quality control people. All this being said I pray that JD responds to all of the rest of you, publicly, on this and the other site. They are an American institution and they need to maintain their heritage of building equipment that lasts forever. Now I'll step down and open this discussion up to the rest of you. I'm sure your responses will be read by JD, then we'll see if they're responded to.

My 4300 delivered 7-00 had the new axle but my dealer was fully aware of the problem. According to him your dealer should be able to get you a new axle with no trouble. He says Deere is very willing to solve the problem. If your dealer won't help, you need to complain to Deere about the axle, and your dealer.

After choosing what you like, I'd be as diligent about choosing the dealer. Every manufacturer has problems no matter what they do. You could be lucky and have a flawless tractor of any color, in which case the dealer could be in Egypt for all you care. Or you could have a simple problem that your dealer doesn't care too much about fixing and all of a sudden your color tractor is !@#$%. It's real easy for the dealer to blame the manufacturer when their not interested in stepping up to the plate. Personally I bought green and love it. I also like the dealer and maintain a personal relationship with them.

I got a 7490 with beeper from R&B. You can set the alarm to go off at any point you want. I set mine for about 18 degrees. You can get info on them on the link I've included. Rick at R&B is a great guy to talk to if you have any questions.

I got a canopy from the dealer like Eddie Watkins for about the same price. I also can't imagine being without it. It does an excellent job of keeping me out of the sun, plus it's a great place to mount tilt meters, clocks, etc.. Unfortunately when I mounted the tilt meter I obscured the manufacturers name. Try doing a search and I'm sure you'll come up with a lead or two.
