When the grass is slippery, it is better to start slipping trying to climb the hill near the bottom than it is to start down the hill and discover it is slippery and slide all the way to bottom (hopefully in a straight line, but sometimes not - I rolled a lawn tractor down the hill once doing this very maneuver (I got off at the top of the hill and luckily only watched it roll as the lawnmower blades were turning :))

In Canada, (non JD) pallet forks with 1200 lb lift capacity that fit in place of the standard bucket on a 430 loader are $550 CDN (quoted price just this week from the JD dealer - they use third party attachments where the customer has a special requirement).

The ones that clamp on to the bucket run $220 EACH ($440 a pair). They have a chain that wrap around the bucket to help distribute the load

Wildman, I notice from your pics you have some LIP mounted bucket forks. Did they come from JD? or did you have them made?

I notice a small 'clunk' on the front axles when disengaging on a 4310. It is more noticeable if the front
wheels are under some load (like holding on a slight incline)

Completed installation of PB today (not nice day, but had to get done).

Observations:

You need large wrenches to undo the hydraulic connectors. 1 3/16 (I only had 1 1/4 so it had to do), 1 1/8, and 1 1/16 and 15/16. A larger wrench is also needed (size unknown) to hold the rockshaft filter when removing. I used vicegrips.

Torque wrench with crowsfeet in above sizes would have been nice. However, tightening by feel seemed to work and I don't see any hydraulic leaks.

The 1 1/16 needs to be thin to hold the fitting for the return line under the seat. I had to grind one of my inherited wrenches down so that it would fit between the pipe connector and the manifold block (15 minutes of grinding).

It takes 1/2 hour to remove/replace the seat/plastic cover and handles (once you have done it once, and when you think you are all done discover that you put the rockshaft lever in the wrong slot in the plastic cover and you have to remove everything again to put it in the right slot. You get real good at rr the seat and cover).

Removing the seat/plastic cover also helped in wiring the additional lights mounted on a cross bar similar to Harvey's.

Now, all I need is the PB implements...

I just put the power beyond in myself (finished today), and it wasn't that difficult.

I was curious as to
what other work was required for the backhoe since the price quote included about $700 in labor for predelivery workorders (including the power beyond) and you have answered that question.

Chief, I started my light installation (in conjunction with the Power Beyond installation since the seat is about to be removed making it easier to get at the wiring).

I picked up a nice double SPST switch (at princess auto for $2) that I mounted on the control panel beside the cup holder and ran wires down the wiring channel. My intention is to connect the 3 rear lights to one switch, and the 2 forward lights to the other switch.

There is a perfect location beside the cup holder for the switch and sufficient room to run the wires. It is a little tedious cutting a hole for the switch, but a dremel helps.

The lights will be mounted as Harvey has them on a cross bar on the ROPS.

Everyone will know when I cut grass at night this summer...

Even though part is marked obsolete on my JD Parts web page, it let me order it anyway (online), and it sent the request to my dealer. The dealer emailed me within 20 minutes (7:53AM) requesting confirmation (and visa number). I called, and the parts should arrive in 1-2 weeks.

Price was $309 CDN (down from $331 earlier this year when CDN dollar was weaker). Still at $210 US versus $309 CDN, that is a $1.47 exchange rate (a little high given today's currency rates).

Haven't ordered arm rests, but did order PBY and worklights to mount on ROPS (like yours).

I'll wait until I have survived the PBY installation before ordering more stuff.

No preheating is done on the tractor and it doesn't have a heated garage. It starts fine in temperatures down to -15 C, and I let it warm up slowly.

My belief is modern engines and oils are designed better for colder temperature starting unlike older engines. For example the rule for our plane is you don't start it without preheat if the temperature < 0 C - aircraft engines haven't changed in 40 years or so. The aircraft engine is also 'designed' to use oil (about 1 litre every 8-10 hours).

No question that a block heater would improve matters, but I haven't had any problems so far except for the one -20 C day (and that was before using diesel conditioner that we discussed in previous post)

Thanks for the information.

The key test point will be whether the visibility stays clear in cold weather either with the plastic or the glass window.

The 4310 only has to handle 5 of the 100 acres. 70 acres is done by a neighbor (with a really BIG JD tractor), the rest is being renaturalized with trees and reclaimed wetland.

I also compaed the 72" versus 60" mower for my 4310. The 60" was about $300 cheaper, and I was of the opinion that it would be more maneuverable around tight obstacles, and that I could cut just as much grass in the same or similar amount of time given I could have a higher ground speed for same power with a smaller cutting requirement.

So far I have been very pleased with the 60"

I also purchased a spare set of blades so I can keep one set sharpened and ready to put on when you hit the inevitable rock that wasn't there the year before...

As I glance at our weather station indicating -24 C, I am wondering about the need for diesel conditioner in the fuel to prevent icing, etc. I have never used it before, but have hear in the last week of 2 instances of diesel fuel gelling up. <br>

Anyone have any experiences as to when one should actually use conditioner or not? What about 'winter' diesel versus 'summer' diesel fuel?<br>

You might consider using a rear mount snowblower so you can leave the loader on. You use the loader to pile snow, and the blower to move it.

It might be less expensive to get a rear snowblower attachment.

Of course, you have to be comfortable moving snow in reverse...

My problem with the 4310 is explained in another thread whose subject is "4310 EHYDRO ISSUE, Post 64792. You can find it using the "Search" facility of the web site (look for subject "4310 ehydro issue" back on 09/24/2003..

In a nutshell, they replaced ALL wiring harnesses on the tractor.

I have discovered that if I do the work myself, and call for the inspection myself, the inspection cost is twice what the cost is if I have the local electrical contractor do the work (with my assistance) and they have the inspection done. The electrical contractor is reasonable, and assists me in advice and help when I am beyond my knowledge. The last house renovation basically had him advise me what not to do, then he inspected and corrected what I did wrong (he forgot to tell me one new electrical rule that I was unaware of), and he supplied the materials at reasonable cost (better than the local hardware store).<br>

I just purchased a propane tip in place of acetylene tips. The victor model I purchased for propane is a 2 piece tip (compared to 1 piece for the acetylene).<br>

The other observable difference is the pattern of the 'holes'. The propane holes appear as little triangular shapes around the oxygen cutting hole (fluted tips), versus<br>
a pattern of circular holes around the cutting hole for acetylene.<br>

Also had to get type "T" hose rather than standard type "R" hose to use propane over acetylene (according to my welding supply store).<br>

Overall, it was still cheaper to use my propane barbecue tank than purchasing an acetylene "B" tank, even with buying a different hose and tip.

The 430 manual might be considered ambiguous but it just looks wrong to me.

It shows a table with 3 columns, with headings "Rear Tires with liquid Ballast" (column 1), "Rear Tires with Liquid Ballast and 6 wheel weights" (column 2), and "Minimum 3-point hitch ballast kg (lbs) (column 3)"

It then has 1 row where it indicates loader use is not approved if wheel width < 59 inches,
The next row has an X in column 1 and a ballast weight of 600 (1320) in column 3.
The last row has an X in column 2 and a ballast weight of 550 (1210) in column 3.

I would conclude as Ken did that the manual indicates you always must have loaded tires, PLUS some ballast. Charts for other tractors have a column labeled "Rear Tires without liquid ballast" (usually with the words - Loader use not approved")

My experience recently with NO LOADED TURF tires, using a box grader is sufficient for filling of the 5' bucket of my loader with dry sand/gravel - you are just on the edge. I would estimate the box grader as weighing 200-300 lbs.
I can move 3/4 of a bucket of top soil with this configuration as well.
