How hard was the rebuild and how much did it cost you? I've been offered a 90's model 4x2, the only catch is that the transmission has been taken apart and is in a box. The owner said it would only go in reverse after a while and took it apart with the intention of a rebuild, which didn't happen. If I decide to take this thing, I may need all the help you can give me!

Are the JD work lights worth the extra cost? I have seen work lights in TSC/walmart etc for a lot less than the $36 for light (plus $4 for the wiring harness, if you need it) my local JD dealer is asking for their work lights. I have a 790, so it has the wiring harness already in place somewhere near the seat...

Input on why the dealer lights are better than other stores is greatly appreciated.

My Dad and I just purchased a 790 and I am need some advise on a couple things... #1 I stopped by a local dealership to price the work light kit.
they quoted me for the lights ($36) and a wiring harness ($4). Do I need both of these or do the lights come with the correct harness?
#2 - What service manual do i need to purchase? they told me the owners manual would have all the info that i would need. I want to have good
in structions for doing routine service and such.

any help would be appreciated

Thanks for the ideas. i will check my java settings.. Unless some changes were made to my computer setings thru the LAN that Im not aware of, nothing has changed there. Before a week or so ago, I had no problems accessing the site and I have not changed versions of IE or installed new aol software.

My dad's 1949 8N will barely raise implements off the ground these days. A while back he had the pump rebuilt, but that doesnt seem to help matters. Years ago it was very, very slow in raising up, but now it is quicker but just doesnt go up very far. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what the problem may be? What is the proper viscosity hydraulic fluid for this? or is it oil?thanks for any help you can give..

Does anyone know what term a financial institution would allow for a land only (no house) loan? I sorta figured they would not do a 30 yr term like a home, but wasnt sure what was normal length. Also what sort of interest rate can you get with a land only purchase? Can you get about the same as a new home?

Althought the general opinion seems to be that TSC implements arent the best, the cost of the extended coverage may something to think about. You can purchase test strips that you can dip in the anti-freeze and it gives you both the level of protection of the anti-freeze and if the level of the additive (nalcool or equilivant) is sufficiant to prevent damage. You just match the color the strip turns to the color chart on the bottle. If the additive level is not sufficiant it will also tell you how much additive to add to the anti-freeze. Any large truck dealerships/shop and truck parts counters (NAPA should carry them also, but autozone etc may not) will have these strips or can order them for you. If memory serves me correctly they are not cheap, but much less expensive than destroying an engine.

After reading some discussion on here about the use of RV anti-freeze to load tires I took a look at a bottle in Wal-mart. The bottle says 'do not dilute' for use in an RV, and that it will get 'slushy' at about -2 F, but protect from freezing down to something like -50.Would the 'slushy at -2' damage the the tire by cutting it on the inside?Based on not diluting, at $3.50 (approx.) a gallon how does rv anti-freeze compare to other methods of loading in terms of cost? I am not sure how many gallons it would take to load a tire.One dealer I spoke to used methanol to load. They used about 3 to 4 gallons, then fill the rest of the way with water. What is methanol and is it sold as something else? Maybe windshield washer fluid?<br>

I am trying to figure out if the L-2600 (which replaced the L2500) is or isn't in current production. I have been by four Kubota dealers and two say the 2600 was replaced by the 3000. The other two (which had 2600's on the yard) said the other dealers were saying that because they didn't have any inventory.Does anyone know if they currently make the 2600?

Im not sure how each store gets their implements, but the store close to my parents (lexingon, VA) carries King Kutter brand equipment. I did a search on 'king kutter' on here and found good comments regarding the brand. One negative is that you have to do final assembly on it. The web page for TSC does not specify any particular brand names, just general specifications. The price for a 4' rotary mower was $489 and 5' was $499, which seems like a fair price and they look rather sturdy and include the stump jumper.

I sorta remembered what the over running clutch was suppose to do (it has been yrs since i have used the mower and tractor though), but thought it also may serve double duty as a slip clutch.. I was slightly confused hehe

My question is..... You have decided to buy your tractor from an 'out of the area' (non local) dealer due to better pricing. You gave the local dealer a chance to match (or come close to) the other dealers price, but they wouldnt do it. How receptive is your local dealer at doing both warranty and non-warranty repair work on your new purchase. I would quess that some are happy to get any service work.. and some may not want to do any work on a machine they did not sell.. Any comments or experience with this...

I know that Exxon uses a 80% diesel and 20% kerosene as their 'winter blend' here in Virginia. What you have to be careful of is that kerosene does not have all the same lubricating qualities as #2 diesel. Kero is refined better/more than diesel and some of the waxes/lubricants (??) are taken out by the time it gets to the kero stage. So if you burn straight kero you could/would damage the engine after XX hours. Although a diesle engine burns the fuel, the fuel also serves as a lubricant as it is used by the engine. I am not sure soon damage may occur, but you can always call an oil company and ask. I am sure they can tell you.

Thanks for taking time to reply... I have a couple follow-up questions for you... What can you do if the implement is too wide for the 4100? Can you invert the attachment points to make it narrow enough? I've seen the 'pins' on the inside of a bushhog frame, but i just thought it hadnt been assemblied correctly.

Do you have to purchase special 'narrow' implements for the 4100? Or is most of the newer stuff made to fit the compacts better than older implements? If i would go with the 4100, i would hope to be able to use some of my dads implements.

Do you ever wish you had gotten something bigger like the 790 or Kubota L25/2600? I think the 4100 would do what I will ask of it, but hate to regret a major purchase decision shortly thereafter just to save a thousand dollars or so..

My father has a 1949 Ford 8N that the rear axle/wheel seals leak on terribly. He has replaced them a few times, but the will start leaking again in very short order. And needless to say the rear brakes don't work great when covered with grease.Does anyone have a fix for this? New seals are not the answer it seems... I thought i read someplace that the 1950 model 8N's used a double, was this due to the leaking and would that seal work on that this tractor.Any suggestions are more than welcome.Thanks

I may be off base here, and I stand to be corrected... BUT I have to disagree with the previous post, Kerosene is widely used to 'winterize' diesel fuel. I just got back from a tour of an Exxon terminal, and their winter diesel is a mixture of 80% diesel and 20% kero. When you add Kero it lowers the waxing point of the diesel so it wont gel up until a lower temperature in the winter. Kero is a cleaner (more refined - hence more expensive) cousin of diesel so that it can be burned in those portable kero heater and not have alot of fumes emitted. YOu should have no trouble mixing it with diesel and burning it in your tractor.. You CAN NOT mix it in a 'licensed vehicle' unless it is CLEAR though - the dyed kero does not have federal tax included and if caught the IRS can fine you (approx $1000 min). If you have any doubts just ask a local fuel distributor if he thinks it would be safe to burn it as a diesel/kero mixture and follow his advise on the ratio.
