Let me again thank you for being willing to write in this forum. I hope everyone will respect that and understand that responses from folks like you are general and cannot be specific to anyone's precise/personal situation (how's that for a disclaimer). That's what dealers are for, but the breadth of knowledge that only engrs like you can bring to this group is a treasure, Paul.

BTW, my TN90F (NH) has a Cat II hitch and weighs over 6000# but is barely larger than a Boomer.

Could I get you to talk about the 2 numbers most often discussed when it comes to tractor mounted backhoes (after digging depth!)...Bucket force and dipperstick digging force? Which one is most important to the forces exerted back to the tractor? For example the 1050 has a relatively high dipperstick force, but somewhat lower bucket force. A competitor's unit has similar DS force to the 1050, but relatively higher bucket force, and they will not sell it without a subframe for the specific tractor, warning that the oomph of the high forces could result in ruptured bell housings, etc.

Also, which is the most stressful aspect of a tractor-mounted backhoe--transporting it or using it? Experts differ on this as you might know.

Let me clarify a couple of comments above, not that I am an expert by any means:
Someone in the know at Bush Hog told me, yes, the JD 47 & 48 are theirs. But this'll shock you--ARPS makes the hoes for them! That, however did not come from BH, but I believe it is correct. Talk about coming to your youknowhat via your elbow!

And the JD#7 someone referred to above is an old JD # and a much smaller hoe than the 47 or 48 if memory serves correctly. I know the first poster referred to #7 when they meant 47, but a later poster was comparing the real #7.

Sorry guys, my SS NH is a bit heavier than the ones you are mentioning here, so I can imagine that it handles differently. Obviously if a SS tractor gets into soft stuff or whatever, the brake steer option is still there.

One nice thing about NH's traction management (4wd on demand, basically) is that it cuts out at extreme steering angles so as not to scuff in front as the tractor spins around in less than its own length on a complete turnaround.

The JD 4000's have their good points, but I'll meet you guys on a maneuvering course thru a bunch of tight turns any day. Even with my 6300 lb/13 ft machine (NH TN90F).

The glass on my NH TN90F fogs but only when I have the cab ac on and it is humid out. It's new so I don't have much experience yet.

What zone rep are you having trouble with? Mine is good, write to me off list if you need to.

Someone made the comment that NH was the only mfr with telescoping (adjustable) draft links on its utility and larger tractors. A couple of points of clarification: JD also offers them, a $267 option, and NH does not put them on all its utility & above tractors--I know because the one I am taking delivery of this week does not have them, aggrrrrrr! NH does offer a modified set of lower draft arms, referred to as a "quick attach hitch" with open-end claws that self-lock, instead of regular hitch balls. They go for some $600+ installed by the dealer, but I really want those telescoping links!

Does anyone know why telescoping links have not made to compacts?

I too almost had a post hole accident when hooking mine up to my current 1720. The pipe in the ground idea sounds ducky.

I appreciate your opinions, Rick, and think I have deduced the line of work you are in. I'll look and see if the Carraro or the NH stamp is on the axles. The rear was where I saw it b4, did not look on the front. The PA dealer was one who told me about the common sourcing, and my extensive digital photo array confirms that the JD 5410 and NH TN's have similar looking rear axles. Stands to reason using even a small part of my brains that the front Supersteer axle & mechanism would be unique of course.

Rick, do you think the capacity of the SS axle on the NH TN (full-size) is appreciably different from the TNF? Although I did not take measurements, an eyeball survey again indicates they are about the same physical size and heft. I have a digital picture I could send you of the 2 side by side in front. Of course the steering mechanism does not show as well--I wonder how different it is.

Your comments on the effects of trackwidth go at least a little over my head because of some of the terminology, but I think I read that my previous conclusion is wrong, particularly with regard to steering and related components. I suppose I was thinking more of the rear axle, but your leveraging comment makes sense.

One other interesting and relevent (to this discussion) thing about Alo is their Soft Drive accessory. It purports to "soften" the hard connection between loader and the tractor/terrain using what appears to be hydraulic dampening. A graph showing the effect on load amplitude (ie, jouncing) over a time line as the tractor is driven over a rough surface, is dramatic. If it works as advertised, it should reduce stress on steering and related components, particularly at high load weights and during turns. Alo even claims it reduces operator fatigue during extended loader work.

Although I love it because it fascinates the TimTheToolman in me, I really wonder how well all this technology goes over in the small Ag market, and I mean supersteer, auto engage FWD as well as the Quicke starships. What do you think?

Even with that fancy stuff, I am not inclined to pay a premium price for Alo over Woods (who specs their Model 1027 for the F tractor) unless I can get the reach, more so than weight, I want. It is not yet clear to me whether Alo's issue with the loader model for the TNS vs the TNF is based on safety considerations (ie, tractor upset due to the narrower width) or on capacity of tractor components. Your comments are carefully noted and I appreciate them greatly. I hope to learn more on Monday when I (1) confirm that NH will not void my warranty for installing a loader per se, and (2) discuss things with the area Quicke rep again.

We have a good 600 twisty up and down feet to trench now for 4 inch conduit and more later. I am about to replace our current 1720 Ford with a 32 speed utility model (min speed about 1/4 mph, 80 PTO hp). A SSL attachment plate for the loader is my goal, for the versatility it offers.

Any thoughts on whether that setup would work with a trencher, folks?

Since new in 1988, my Ford 1720 with manual shuttle and 7108 loader has had only one minor problem. The foot throttle cable loosened up or became dislodged in some way. Took the dealer about a half hour or less to fix it on a routine lub service visit.

A bulletproof machine. I am close to taking delivery of a NH utility size tractor (TN90F) and wonder if Fiat has maintained the reliability while improving the technology a great deal.

Time will tell.

Just reading this thread and wondering if you folks would write in an update on what you did. I am about to get a NH utility tractor (looking at the TNF and TNS) and want to run a PTO driven vac with a mower (necessary for the vac pickup).

See www.covercraft.com. They will send you a diagram for spec'g a cover for a tractor, then quote the price thru a dealer. Yes, they are the same folks that make car covers in Evolution 3 fabric. We have one for ea of our cars, but keep our 1720 Ford (currently for sale) under an RV barn roof.

Search the www for the best prices on Covercraft at retail once you have the diagram.
