I have a 6' Landpride which is recommended for 20-40 hp I believe. I am using a 19 PTO hp Deere 855 and the mower will not load the tractor much. The mower will stop cutting neatly long before it strains the tractor, so I tend to think that you may be ok with something larger if that's what you want.

I recently purchased a Deere 855 with turf tires. I did not expect it to have traction to do much outside of the yard, but what they will pull is very surprising. I, too, work on deer food plots, and I farm for a living. I would have never thought this tractor would handle a 6 ft. heavily built harrow, but it will pull it deep enough to turn under well. It did require 250 lbs. of front wieghts and filling the front tires with water to balance. Getting back to the point, I did not really want turf tires when I bought the tractor, but I would heartily recommend them now. If nothing else, the rear tire size on mine is 33-12.50-15, so I could go buy some Super Swampers if I get tired to the turfs.

I might recommend you give consideration to a three point hitch finish mower for the added versatility. You may begin to dislike the belly mower the first time you run out of ground clearance doing something other than mowing.

What about R-4s on the rear and turf on the front of a 2wd tractor? Do you think this would work? I am considering this and would appreciate your opinion. It seems that the fronts do the damage as long as you don't get down on the brakes.

Can't say about smaller engines, but I have run larger tractors with 9500+ hours personally and know a 12000 hr John Deere down the street.
