Rex, I am in disbelief that you can't order parts for your JD. A BIG Part of JD's reputation has always been for their parts availability. Checking the JD Parts catalog (PC-1876) for the JD-850/950 it shows: Complete Power Steering system (less selective control) part no: AR90799 and Complete Power Steering (w/selective control) part no: AR90800. We were curious so we went on line at http://jdparts.johndeere.com to check and see and sure enough according to JD it shows that the parts are no longer available? I find that hard to believe. If you are really interested in the upgrade you might want to check with another JD dealership that is willing to work with you. I have to believe that some dealer somewhere has this part collecting dust on their shelf. I have had some success working with my local JD dealer in the past locating parts out of the ordinary such as this. From past experience I recall they have an alternate database/source they can use for these type searches. IMHO, I think sometimes dealers want to sell you new rather than accomodate an exhaustive search for parts for a customer. Translation: If your mind is made up, I wouldn't take no for an answer and give up on your search to easily as realistically the 850 was made up until the late 80's and parts should still be available.

On the flip side of this, the previous two CTB posters made some excellent points about cost associated with the upgrade. Also, I am not aware of any aftermarket PS-kit available for JD compacts. For places to try to look for used, you might want to consider a site like eBay, or the jplan.com classifieds. You can also try the Used equipment machine finder dealer link at the deere.com website. Ken, The JD Technical Manual for the 950 has wiring diagrams. (JD document TM-1192). I have a copy and can try to answer any specific questions you may have. Thanks Mark

L.D. I think a JD 440 Loader that (we believe) fits the 970 can be had for around $3500-->$4000 new from JD. You mentioned moving dirt. A tractor loader would work well for moving loose soil but IMHO a box blade w/teeth would do a much better job at leveling small hills and "dozer" like operations. Loosening the soil with the box blade and then following up with the loader might be a better way to go. Have you considered a box blade? As far as weher to look, I have seen some new/used JD loaders pop up occasionally on Ebay.com Hope this information helps. Good Luck.

Not to overlook the obvious here but where is your throttle setting when you are trying to start the Tractor? It is a long shot but if the throttle isn't set high enough you might be trying to start the tractor with the fuel pump partially shut down. If I remember correctly the 750 is shut down via the throttle handle. Also, is there any white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe when the tractors turns over? This might be a clue to where the problem is. Fuel or Glow Plugs. What are the light indications on your dashboard when you engage the glow plugs? Is your glow plug circuit fuse blown?. Please keep the list posted to your final resolution and Good Luck.

Paul, the serial number on the 1050 should be on the back of the tractor between the pto shaft and the drawbar. FYI, from the 1998 ag blue book the serial numbers info. for the 1050 is as follows:

You didn't mention if it was 2wd or 4wd. For comparison, a family member bought a 1978 (first year built) 2wd 950 w/75 loader, DSC Valve and Power Steering with low hours in excellent shape for $6500 locally (NY). As far as value it mainly depends on location and condition. Compacts in my area aren't cheap. The Blue book (1988) lists avg. auction prices on the 2wd low.$5550..avg.$6161..high.$6675 and the 4wd low.$6477..avg.$7109..high.$7347. A loader and any implements would add additional value. As far as weaknesses I don't think there are many with the 50 series JD's. They were pretty solid and trouble free. IMHO, The hydraulics are a little slow by today's standards and I know hi/lo range on the reverse (at least on the early 950's) is either too slow or too fast for my liking. AFAIK, The 1050 does have a turbocharger so proper maintenance and oil changes might be a concern. Hope this info. helps and good luck on the purchase. Regards Mark
