I have an older (mid 80's) JD850 which I would like to add power steering to so I can add a loader. I have checked with my local JD dealer and have been told that JD no longer makes a kit to add power steering to this model. Is there any after-market kits available? My 850 is a two wheel drive and I need to power steering to handle the loader.

Rex, I recently sold my mid eighties JD650. The 650 is the baby brother to your tractor. I was thinking about adding the power steering kit plus a loader to mine. Found out that the power steering kit cost $1100, the control valve for the loader with 'power beyond kit' cost $700, and the loader (JD#70) cost $3500. Total cost $5,300 plus tax. I sold my tractor for $5,000 and put the money towards a new one. I did not want to invest five grand in an old machine. You could probably sell yours and add the money you would spend on the upgrades and be able to just about pay the entire cost of a new one. For example, A Kubota in the 20 to 24 hp range with 4X4. Hope this is of use.

Rex--I have an 850--great machine. You are going to have some real limitations when you try to use a loader with 2-wheel drive. You must have rear wheel weights or loaded tires. Even then you will lose traction when the bucket has any appreciable load. Don't know your current hydraulics. Do you have an SCV valve? If not and you are adding that and the loader you might want to rethink the whole project. Might make more sense to buy an 850 with loader, SCV valve and power steering. [With this new edit function I get to do this: I sent my reply at the same time Mrwurm did so I didn't read his beforehand. I think we both told you the same thing but for somewhat different reasons--probably not a workable idea] ....

Rex, I am in disbelief that you can't order parts for your JD. A BIG Part of JD's reputation has always been for their parts availability. Checking the JD Parts catalog (PC-1876) for the JD-850/950 it shows: Complete Power Steering system (less selective control) part no: AR90799 and Complete Power Steering (w/selective control) part no: AR90800. We were curious so we went on line at http://jdparts.johndeere.com to check and see and sure enough according to JD it shows that the parts are no longer available? I find that hard to believe. If you are really interested in the upgrade you might want to check with another JD dealership that is willing to work with you. I have to believe that some dealer somewhere has this part collecting dust on their shelf. I have had some success working with my local JD dealer in the past locating parts out of the ordinary such as this. From past experience I recall they have an alternate database/source they can use for these type searches. IMHO, I think sometimes dealers want to sell you new rather than accomodate an exhaustive search for parts for a customer. Translation: If your mind is made up, I wouldn't take no for an answer and give up on your search to easily as realistically the 850 was made up until the late 80's and parts should still be available.
On the flip side of this, the previous two CTB posters made some excellent points about cost associated with the upgrade. Also, I am not aware of any aftermarket PS-kit available for JD compacts. For places to try to look for used, you might want to consider a site like eBay, or the jplan.com classifieds. You can also try the Used equipment machine finder dealer link at the deere.com website. Over at yesterday's tractors (www.ytmag.com) I seem to recall discussions about adding PS to older farm tractors. I believe the tractors discussed never had PS as an option. I'm not certain, but checking ytmag might come up with a different alternative.
On the other hand, people do loader work with 2wd, manual steering tractors. I do quite a bit of my loader work in 2wd. The PS steering on my Ford 1710 really is power assist and not particularly strong. As mentioned, the main problem is that the steering is hard when the bucket is full. Balancing the load with a heavy implement on the 3ph lightens up the steering. Operating techniques also help. For example, straightening the wheels before coming to a complete stop makes a big difference in the effort required for steering. Using the bucket to raise the front a bit makes it easy to turn the wheels when the tractor is stopped.
Anyway, a viable low option probably is to just use it as it is. Slow loader operation if the tractor hydraulics are used may be more aggravating than the manual steering.
