The place to start is at the starter. You will need a voltmeter and possibly help turning the key switch if you don't have long enough leads. You need to take the start signal wire off the starter, connect the volt meter to the lead and turn the key to "start." You need to see at least 10 volts. Any less and the starter most likely will not energize. This condition is what causes the "clicking but not always starting" you read about elsewhere. Your starter works if you supply battery voltage to the start terminal, you've already confirmed that. The switches and related circuits may all be working but even so if the voltage at the end is too low, you get the "no start" symptom. If that's the case, there is a solution to the problem. If you get no voltage at all, then proceed with testing from the key switch on down.

[/QUOTE]The parts list for the 410 loader does not show a control valve. Assuming you have a valve that operates it, and it's not on any tractor remote valves, right?

If everything else works as it should, (steering, three point, bucket cylinders, etc) you can pretty much rule out the hydraulic fluid and filters as a problem. Focus on the lift/lower spool of the control valve. Particularly so if it's one of those junky cable controlled versions. Even if it's a simple manually operated single lever style, peel the boot back and observe the ball joints and knuckles to make sure the spool is travelling when you move the lever.

The power steering on the 235 is well known for problems that are difficult to impossible correct. No argument there.

I believe if it were mine I would approach trading the steering out long before the engine swap thing. Much less work and fabrication. I would look at a unit from 135 possibly. It would involve changing the transmission shift cover and probably some other mods as well. Having never done it, I don't know what all the obstacles might be. Another option might be hydrostatic steering from a 240 or 245 but that would include a different front axle to accommodate external cylinders. No easy way out there.

The relay idea has merit, yes, I've used that trick a few times. It works well enough it the start signal is too weak to energize the starter solenoid.

That doesn't really sound like the problem to me. I think you should be checking and cleaning the ground cable where it bolts to the tractor. That's too good a possibility to ignore in this case.

The shims would be in the diverter valve block. Apparently the relief valve will vary some depending on tractor serial number.

I wasn't suggesting the starter to be the problem, only that hearing it engage and operate would eliminate a cable/connection issue and take you back to wiring and other circuits.

Okay. Are you aware that the live pto and hydraulic lift pump both drive from the same source. When the pto portion of the clutch is disengaged, both of them stop turning, not just the pto shaft. If you now find that neither is working at all, your problem could be in the clutch itself. Have you removed the cover plate from under the bell housing and looked for anything unusual in that area? You may find fragments of clutch lining and/or other evidence of disc or clutch failure.

The relief on your system is in the divertor block located on the lower right side of the tractor. This is the block with three lines leading to the loader valve. It is shim adjusted, so if it's set too low you will need to add shims, not just turn a screw. You will first need a pressure gauge, at least a 3000 psi, and a fitting to match one of the hydraulic couplers on the tractor(or the necessary fittings to "tee" into the pressure side of the system). Your choice here. Once you have established the current relief valve pressure reading you can plan your next move.

Noise in that area is NOT normal, nor should you continue to operate it before determining what it is. I would imagine the "adjustment" had something to do with the clutch pedal travel/freeplay. Whether the pedal is up, down, or somewhere between when you hear the noise may help narrow down what's causing it. If the noise(or something similar) was there before purchase, then you and the "dealer" have something to talk about.

I have not yet been into the governor on one of those engines, so I have comment. I will say that to the best of my knowledge it's somewhere under the front cover, nestled among the timing gears.

Most Long tractor hydraulic pumps will be a tapered shaft with a woodruff key. Probably about 7 GPM.
Depending on the model, it may have either a metal suction screen or a spin on filter in the suction line. Have you serviced that?

It doesn't seem all that complicated. You haven't mentioned the GPM involved, but one of these might be sufficient. You could install it multiple ways, either inline with one line from pump to/through the relief, and one from there to motor. You can mount the relief somewhere solid, then put a tee in the pressure line with a hose leading to the relief. Either way, the exhaust would lead back to tank.
