Thanks, folks, got it off. While I was basically doing what you said before I solicited your advice, I wasn't really sure of what I was doing and had not been keeping enough pressure on the guard bell to keep the first "tang" from slipping back into place while trying to release the second and third. Thanks again.

OK, thanks for the help. I managed to stop by the dealer and looked at the diagram. Bleed screw on the injection pump is in the middle, the one at the bottom drains the oil from pump, the one at the top is to refill the oil in the pump. Just bleeding at the screw on the fuel filter and the pump wasn't enough, however, I finally had to loosen the "banjos" on the fuel filter and the pump to get all the air out and get it started. I will be sure to keep some reserve in the fuel tank at all times from here on...

TomG, your oil probably does have water vapor in it, which could increase the chance of cavitation occuring. Even without water present, oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons so you would get various partial pressures of the components. But, then, I'm not an engineer and I don't really know anything about the properties of hydraulic oil.

My problem with safety shoes is similar to my problem with regular shoes, only more so - finding ones that fit. My shoe size is 11 to 12 1/2 depending on brand, but the ball of my foot is an EEEE width while my heel is about a B. Most shoe manufacturers these days seem to think everybody is a C and safety shoe manufacturers seem to think feet come to a point in front. Anyone know of a safety shoe that is shaped somewhat like a Birkenstock? It is bad enough having my toes cramped by leather, which gives a bit, but steel toes generally don't break in very well...

Surplus cargo containers come in a aluminum or steel and in a variety of lengths. They are also available insulated and with wheels (but I don't know what type of wheels - I was told that the one I inquired about buying came with wheels, but I didn't follow up on it). The Yellow pages here in Portland, OR, lists half a dozen outfits under "cargo containers". Doing a Google search on the Internet will give you lots of links, but most of them are for rental for shipping. The one I have listed below is one that I happened to have bookmarked, but I haven't dealt with them at all:

I should have mentioned in my post directly above that when you get to the CodeCheck website, scroll down the menu on the left side of the screen to find the electrical (or plumbing, or mechanical) area. If you don't do that, it just looks like a site to sell you their hard cover book - which, by the way, is pretty handy to have around...

I need to get a longer PTO shaft. Both the tractor and the implements have the standard compact tractor 1 3/8" splined shaft. When I look at a list of possible PTO shafts such as at http://www.agri-supply.com/catmain/3500010.htm, I see a variety of designations such as AX6, AX8, RX1, TX1, etc. Could someone give me a short course in PT0 nomenclature so I can figure out just what I really need?

As I was inflating the somewhat old tires on my flatbed trailer up to 70psi the other day, I was thinking about the steel cages that many truck tire places use when inflating truck tires. Just how catastrophic a failure can occur when an 8 ply tire lets go at 70psi? I have had three tread separations on tires on my vehicles, but can't recall ever having a real blowout of the side wall.

I would be happier with the Javascript window if I could figure out how to permanently enlarge it. Each time it pops up, it is only 1/4 of my screen so I have to pull it down and often will widen it as well. The area to "catch" the bottom and sides of the window are vary narrow, at least in Netscape, and too often when I click I am no longer over the active area, so the Javascript window drops out of site behind the other windows and I have to retrieve it. Other than those minor quibbles, I am neutral - the current arrangement has some advantages but I certainly didn't mind the old way.

According to TractorTips, the 1910 was made from 1982 to 1986. It was followed by the 1920 in 1987 which had a larger engine with a slight gain in weight. As was the 1900 and the 1920, it was made for Ford by Shibaura. The TractorTips specs for the 1910 was 103.9 cu.in. diesel, 12/4 gearbox, and weighs just a few pounds under 3,000. I had thought that the 1910 had an optional transmission, but TractorTips doesn't list one for the 1910, only the 1920. I have had no problems getting parts for my 1900 from my local New Holland dealer. Parts are not necessarily cheap, however.

I am guessing here. I have driven older 4x4s on gravel roads and have gotten bucking but only when turning. In running straight, I would guess that if there was a mismatch between front and rear axle effective ratios, then with the older leaf springs you could get quite a bit of axle windup until the tires lost traction and then there would be a buck as the spring unwound and then went through another cycle. If this were the case, the bucking would be dependent upon the traction of the surface and the degree of mismatch between the axles. But I could be wrong...

My Yanmar 186D has 15" width rear tires. These are Goodyear XtraTrac 31 x 15.5 - 15NHS tires and have a small herringbone lug pattern; much smaller lugs than standard R4 tires. I have been told that they hold up well but haven't had the tractor long enough for any personal experience. I was told that these tires were a standard option on Yanmar 186D tractors at the time it was sold so I don't know how readily available such wide rims are. While not as wide as duals, they are certainly considerably wider than your standard R4 or turf tires.

Out here in Oregon, I have seldom seen the type of fencing with the "V" design as described by Roger. Much of the older fencing has uniform openings of about 4"x6" while most of the newer stuff has the decreasing sized openings toward the bottom as mentioned by Murf, although I don't remember seeing any with a 9" opening. The Ag stores and the big box stores around here generally sell a general utility type fencing such as the "Ranch Hand" shown on the web page:

and a more expensive type labeled as "no climb" which has smaller openings that is supposed to prevent livestock from being able to catch their hooves in it. I have only seen this in 100' rolls - which is generally priced about 10% to 20% more than the standard fencing in 330' rolls.

Just curious, has anyone used the heavy gauge 16' long welded wire panels? Aesthetically they don't do that much for me but it looks like they would do a better job of resisting livestock that like to lean against fences (of course, that is what the electric fence wire is supposed to do.)

What are the merits and relative values of the various types of manure? I can probably get a fair quantity of horse manure mixed with bedding straw fairly cheap but I am not aware of any place locally that I could get chicken manure or steer manure in bulk. I assume that horse manure would be better than nothing. Is there any easy way to spread a few truck loads of horse manure over an acre plus field without having a wagon type manure spreader? Would composting the horse manure before putting it on the field? If put on fresh, would working it into the soil in the fall be a significant advantage over doing it in the spring? I hope to plant blueberries in one field so may also need to adjust the acidity of the soil.

As to putting in 90 wt oil and hydraulic fluid, I have a couple of suction guns - similar to a grease gun without the lever action but you pull or push the oil in/out with the handle stickout out the back. With one I suck the old oil out and with the other one I suck up a pint or so of new oil and squirt it in. Most auto supply stores sell these.

About a year ago I paid $5300 for a super clean 1900 with about 800 hours on it. It does not have a loader so you would need to estimate that. I think the Johnson loader hasn't been made for a while, so it is probably as old as the tractor. I would guess if the loader is in reasonably good shape it might add around $1500 but possibly only $1000.
