At a JD dealer this weekend I saw a 950 with 219 hours (very clean) listed for $8250. I got the feeling that they would come off that price but I only looked momentarily before I was off test driving a 4200 (which is not a good thing to do if your intention was to look at a 950!) ....

The price doesn't seem to be off too much, if the tractor is 4wd it's not too bad, don't forget that the tractor has been out of production for a few years. To find the loader I would recommend calling a local dealer to use their locator and see if there are any out there. The biggest problem will be finding a NEW one. 2000- to 2500 will be high side money on this item, confirm that you can get the hydraulic kit you will need, depending how you look for it you can still buy it through Deere either as a whole good and definitely as parts but it will cost you a mint. Don't wait to long.... Good Luck. ....

Jeff,The price depends on what area of the country you are in. I paid almost $10K for a JD 650 with a loader and 300 hrs, but I am (1) in California, and (2) in Silicon Valley. To me the price for your 850 sounds fine. In some other areas, it might sound a bit high. Most of the dealers/sellers are somewhat flexible on price, so you may be able to get it for a better price. As far as a loader, if my 650 can take a loader, I'm sure an 850 can. I'll bet JD still makes a loader for this tractor (call your dealer), but there are also many after-market loaders also available, and probably less expensive. Mine is a Bushhog, but I've seen several other makes referenced in this forum. ....

I looked at a few 850's before I bought an '81 750. The average price I saw in SC was right at $7000 for the the 850's, so I believe the quote you had was in line. If you can get him down some, all the better. That's pretty low hours for a tractor (probably) made in the '80's. Mine had 977 on it. I got my tractor, a 4 foot harrow, and a 4 foot bushog for $5000. It's a 2wd with no PS or loader, though. Good luck....Keith ....
