I have bought a Massey Ferguson 230 tractor. It does not have a drawbar. There is not a dealer nearby, so I went to Tractor Supply Company. They sell a "swinging" drawbar for about $30 that is supposed to fit Class I 3-point hitches. Is this the correct drawbar? What holds it in place? There seem to be multiple holes drilled in one end. Is there any majic as to which one is bolted or pinned? All I really need the drawbar for is to mount a hitch ball so that I can pull a small trailer down through the pasture.
As you can tell, I'm new to tractors altogether.

My drawbar is a flat bar that slides through support brackets underneath the differential case and forward to a pivot point under the TX case. Many drawbars have two holes drilled about 18" apart at one end. Those holes allow the drawbar to be extended for operation of pull implements that require PTO power. Holes at the other end accommodate various hitch types and positions. Most drawbars swing around the pivot point to accommodate tight steering but also can be restrained in various positions along a rack.
I've seen various types of factory drawbars on tractors, and I don't think there's a universal type. The part referred to by TSC may be a 3ph device. There are specific 3ph trailer receiver devices that people do use. However, there are various discussions in the archives here about using such devices safely. For a trailer of much weight it's good to remember that tractors are much better at pulling than stopping. It’s good to understand safety issues.

The flat bar under the differential case is the one that I want. TSC does have both the type that fit between the hitch arms and a universal replacement for the one under the tractor. What holds the flat bar under the tractor in place? Is it pinned at the front? By the way, the TSC bar has a slight offset on one end. I assume that the bar can be flipped over to vary the pull height by a couple of inches. ....

I suggest you look at the bottom of your differential and see if it is already drilled and tapped. If so, get the right drawbar bracket for your tractor (make a template and take it with you if you want to look at aftermarket stuff).
Personally, I am not brave enough to drill and tap a differential case on a tractor I haven't already torn down.

I dunno if this helps, but the drawbar on my Deere has a one inch pin that one can pull and adjust the bar in and out as needed. The pin is actually inserted from the bottom and held in place with a wire clip. Does MF have a web site with exploded parts drawings like JD does? ....

It's been a long time since I've extended my drawbar, but I sort of remember a pin at the front. I wouldn't try to use a universal bar unless the tractor is designed for that type of bar. As others noted, drilling cases is a very shaky idea. Massey is now part of AGCO, White before that, but several dealers around here still carry the Massey name. Any of those names should be able to tell if the tractor is designed for this type bar and probably can supply specifically for the tractor. Most dealers these days are one the net, and will ship most anywhere. ....

Thanks to all for the help and the suggestions. I think the tractor is predrilled for the drawbar. I certainly would not be drilling and tapping a hole in the transmission case myself! I will check this weekend (farm is an hour's drive away) and see the configuration. I did find and talk with a local dealer, so I know where to go for parts. ....
