Alright, I know everyone has torn this subject up one side and down the other, but I need to make my decision this weekend so I would like to make another run down to be completely prepared:-Use: 4 ac, 2 horse stalls, lots of manure, pastures, yard, snow and rock piles.-Size: 4100,4200,B2100, etc. Dealer keeps bringing up 790. Pros/Cons of them? What do they lack compared to 4000s? Will the <20 hp be too light weight?-4wd: Is it that usefull? Should I go for more power, and weights/filled tires instead?-Mid mount: Worth the extra money? We have a few hills, ruts and gulleys; are 3pt finish harder to manuver in these places?-Tires: Wife is really worried about front yard ruts. Are Ag's too hard on yards? Will Turf's do ok in semi-muddy manure piles? Will the loader be too heavy on them? What about Firestone floater tires (too wide?)-Gear vs. Hst: Tougest of them all.... I used to use an old Massey(geared) to brush hog and drag the local arena. Never had a problem with shifting it. Recently used a rental 455hst, and it was kinda neat. But not really like a tractor.OK.. I appreciate all the great info, and any other help would be great! Hopefully I can test a NH boomer and a Kubota Friday! Looked at Kioti and Long, but not impressed by dealer. Thanks

The 790 John Deere is 30hp I believe. The only down side to the 790 is the weight. It is pretty light. Fluid in the tires would help that. As for tires, you considered R-4 industrial tires? They have a bar type tread, they are wide like turf tires, but give better traction. I am considering a new tractor and that 790 is awfully tempting. Local dealer priced it to me in 4WD with a JD loaderfor $13700. I am not sure that the R-4's are an option with the 790 though. Brent ....

Mike,Just bought my new Tractor. It will be delivered 5/12. I have grass 5 acres with serious hills. We are building a 6 stall horse barn and fencing.I have multiple NH, Deere, and Kubota dealers within 25 miles of my house. Here is what I considered/test drove:NH: 21D, 25D, 29D, and 33D. - Overall nice tractors. Best ergonomics of the three. Prices were more than Kubota about the same a Deere.Deere: 4100 and 4200. - Most expensive, didn't care for the ride.Kubota: 2710, 3010, and 3410. Least attractive (didn't care for the color when I started looking). Priced best. Seemed to be the best quality of the three.Tires: Ag tires seemed to be too damaging. Turf tires are not recommended for loader work. R4 Ind tires were a good compromise, although pricey at $700.Transmission: It was Hydro only for me.4WD: Needed for the hills.Mid-Mount: I went for the rear discharge, 3 point pull behind mower. What did I buy? I went for the Kubota 3410HST. Ample power and room to grow; more than I wanted to spend, but I think I'll be happy in the long run.I would suggest you drive the NH 21D and 29D. Also, try the Kubota 2710, 3010 and 3410. It was a real toss up between the 2710 and 3410. The dealer decided for me when he sold the 2710 an hour before I got to the dealership.Best of Luck,Mike ....

I have had my JD 790 for one month now. I have no complaints, other than the need for weights on the front to counter balance the rear mower. I also have the JD loader, a Land Pride 5 foot finish mower and 6 foot LP rear blade . I paid $15.800 delivered for the package. I also looked at Massey Ferguson, Boomers and Kubotas, all nice tractors. I feel the 790 in the HP and size range to be the best buy. I looked and read , drove all sizes and HP ranges of all these tractors. I mow 5 acres and have a 600 foot gravel drive I matain along with landscaping and wood hauling. the JD is well suited to the tasks. I have turf tires and 4 WD. My dealer told me he is replacing the industral tires for his coustomers because of the damage to lawns. The Kubote 2710 is nice but the rear axle length past the bearing housing was a concern for me. I also have a good friend whom sells Kubotas and offered me a good deal on the 3010 hydro 4WD turf tires $ 13.300. I still went Green? ....

The 790 is a good base model tractor look very hard at it. It is a loss leader tractor. They make very little profit on that tractor. They sell it primarily to get you to buy green and feel they can keep you. It will probably be your best buy. However, for my purposes the Kubota B2710 is better. The hydro is much better for loader work. Further the Kubota hydro has is all over the JD. Drive the two and you will see the difference. Driving the JD is jerky if you are not smooth with your foot or if going over bumps moves your foot.Probably need to stay with a smaller size tractor to be able to work in the barn and stalls with the loader. Go small and load the tires or add wheel weights if it proves necessary.I think the R-4 tires will offer you the best compromise in tires.4 wheel drive is a must!I would stay with JD or Kubota for brands, others make a good tractor but these two are the best long term IMHO.Rememebr that a good tractor will last you better that 20 years or you can sell it tomorow, so look at how long you will likely keep it, get a tractor to meet 80 percent of your needs not your dreams. ....

Mike, Some of my thoughts on your questions. Most Compact tractors will do any of the things you will be asking it to do, What you need to do is really decide on what you can aford to spend then figure the cost of the atachments you will need. Some things I see you needing is a Front loader, mower (mid or groming) Rear scraperblade these are the minimums to buy with tractor, then as you can afford more get some other things you would like. Size: Always buy the most HP you can afford but look at the weight class, to light (JD4100/JD790) and loader work is harder, to heavy and lawn work is not as good (JD4500/4600) 4WD is a must have for loader work! don't buy without it. Tires: Forget R1 AG's and even R4 Construction tires if you plan to use it on a lawn, I have R3 Turfs on my JD4400 and even with them I must be Very carefull when turning (Never Drive On a lawn with 4WD engaged) and will not go on even a damp lawn as the lawn will tear. I do a lot of loader work and have never had a problem with the turf tires, The Titans on my JD are pretty agressive on the rear and have worked well in all I have done, mud and all. Gear vs. HST I think this boils down to personal preferance, I have the 12/12 Syncreverser and like it a lot. I had a JD955 and didn't care much for the HST. I have owned a JD770, JD955, JD970 and I now have the JD 4400 and run a part-time tractor business doing Loader-work, Rototilling lawn core-areation and postholes. Some other thoughts are get the folding ROPES, Its a must for working in a barn or shed, get a quick on/off loader, you will not want to run around with the loader on all the time and you will not want to dread putting it on or taking it off. I can go into greater detail if you E-mail me your questions. Tom ....

I posted this to main group by mistake. Some differences to be aware of: Loader max lift = 755 lbs for 790 and 1195 lbs for 4200; 4200 has independent pto. ....

4100 has a problem with mounting backhoes. The 4 whl drive in a compact gives you the extra bite you need to approach a size larger 2 whl drive tractor. If you are cutting grass take it out of 4 wheel or look for a bi-speed option. the reason the grass gets torn up is the slip of the front wheels in a sharp turn. Bi speed allows them to turn better without the scuffing. For loader operation I swear by hydro. Guess I'm getting too old for shifting.JD and Kubota are both fine tractors. Pick the brand by the responsiveness ofthe dealer and his willingness to support you in the out years. That's worth a whole lot more than the color of the tractor. ....

I noticed that also, and mentioned it to the salesman today. I had to explain to him that I don't have thoughts of lifting 800-1200 pounds of manure.... I just wanted to know why one could lift so much more than the other. Even the 4100 is rated 882 lbs. Also the 3pt. lift capacity is lower on 790. He couldn't tell me why the difference... Any ideas? ....
