I have been looking at compacts and have been leaning toward a TC29D with 60" mid mount mower and R-4 tires for $15,900 plus tax. Does this seem like a fair price?I am also considering looking at 3 Ford 1520 tractors, all with hydro. Does anyone know the horsepower on the 1520 and how big of a brush hog it could handle? I want to use the tractor for mowing, snow removal, brush hogging, and pulling small logs in the woods. Is the 1520 big enough to do all this and is the TC29D big ebough? Are the R-4 tires the best tire choice for my use of the tractor or can I get turf tires and be happy?Do these prices on the Ford 1520's seem reasonable? They all are hydro with turf tires.1. 1520 with 4WD, 200 hrs, & 72" mid-mower for $13,500.2. 1520 with 4WD, 900 hrs, front-end loader, grader blade, & 72" 3-point mower for $12,900.3. 1520 with 4WD, 1400 hrs, and 60" mid-mower for $9,500.I appreciate any input and really enjoy this site

Well, I went an looked at the tractors. He only had two 1520's. He also had a Ford/New Holland 1720 4WD with shuttle shift, 7308 FEL (I think that's right), turf tires and 6' 3-point finish mower for $14,900. How does this price seem?
I really liked the 1520 with 72" mid-mount mower but it had no FEL and I think the FEL would be really nice.
One 1520 was really nice with a 72" mid mower with only 225 hrs hydro and turf tires. Price was 13,900. Really nice looking tractor but no FEL. What is the price range for a FEL for this tractor and how hard is it to find one?
The other 1520 had a 6' 3-point mower, 1085 hrs, FEL (not sure what kind), and 6' blade. Also hydro with turf tires for $12,900.
I have no idea how good or bad these prices are and have no idea which to go with if the prices are good.

A couple of months ago I was quoted $13980 for a TC29D with Ag tires by a dealer in Vermont. R4's were $240 extra.I ended up buying a TC33D with a FEL and got him to knock $700 off the initial asking price, so I'm betting there was at least a few hundred $$ of wiggle room in his price for the 29D as well.
My 33D has handled a 5 ft brush mower with no problems (cutting mostly very heavy grass/weeds and up to 1"+ brush/saplings at times). I'm sure the 29D would have no problem as well. Sorry, I can't help on the HP for a 1520. ....

Domenico, the 7308 loader is still available for the 1520, I just bought one last weekend for about $3500 at a dealer in michigan. That included the loader, frame, HD bucket and scv. It took about 6 hrs to get it all installed, the next one would take 3. The last step is to mount the bucket and wouldn't you know it, the moounting pins were missing. Back to the dealer today to get them.

I bought a Ford 1620 in mint condition with 641 hours and a 72 inch mid mount mower two or three years ago and paid $10,000. At the time I thought it was a little steep but love the tractor and it has pushed huge amounts of snow. I have turf tires for mowing but put chains on front and back and it has great traction. The 1520 is not too much different. ....

Domenico, the 1520 is factory rated at 23 Gross Engine HP, 19.5 PTO HP. I owned its slightly bigger brother, a 1620 (27 HP) for 4 years. It had the 7308 FEL and the backhoe attachment. Had Turf tires on it. It was a GREAT little machine. It had 825 hours of use when I sold it to buy a TC40D with FEL and backhoe. (Darn near cried when I dropped it off to its new owner.) I did a lot of work with it, especially when we built a new house in 1998. Did my own driveway, sand mound, underground utilities, backfilling, french drain and landscaping. They are wonderful machines. Had no problems with it. Also mowed 6-7 acres with it regularly and made some money on the side. Don't be put off by claims that the hydrostatic trannies are unreliable. Just keep it serviced regularly. Also, if you need traction in the mud,etc., get a set of chains for all four tires. You'll be amazed. Good luck. ....

Thanks for all the input. I think I am going pass on the two Fords I looked at (the 1520 and 1720). Based on fe3edback I have received, the prices are a little on the high side. I have looked at the TC 29D and really like it. Asking price is 15,900 with a 60 inch mid mount mower. I am a little concerned that the fenders and hood are all plastic. Has anyone experienced problems with cracking or breaking these parts? It seems that it would be easy to bang into trees and crack the plastic. Thanks again for all the advice. I have learned alot since I first started reading the posts on this site. ....

Dom, the only thing I have noticed is that it will chip rather deeply when damaged as opposed to metal that chips through the paint surface and then generally stops. The tractor is fairly well protected if you have a loader on it but accidents can happen. My TC has one chip left from a dealer repair and another on the rear fender from an unknown culprit. On the plus side it is very thick as opposed to the sheetmetal used these days and can be repaired with gelcoat or the like. In my opinion, it is a toss-up, look at the old Corvettes still on the road as opposed to sheet metal vehicles. ....
