Was out grading with my kubota L3010(HST) W/Woods GB72 box scraper. At the time I was in reverse smoothing out a ditch line I had just filled. I was in low range, about 1/2 throttle, when I caught the rear corner of my box scraper on a small stump that had been cut at ground level. It happened so fast that by the time I let off the pedal that the damage had already been done. The lower link was bent and the casting on the rear axle(ears) where it attaches to had broken. Needless to say I was shocked to see the damage that was done. My kubota is less than a year old with only 30 hrs on it. I have operated tractors and implements for nearly 15 years without ever having this problem. Has anyone ever had this problem with a Kubota before? Will Kubota's limited warranty cover this or will I be out of pocket on this one.

That is an unusual failure. Do you think it was a weak casting or attachment point that started the process? I suspect that the way to deal with this is to get with your local dealer. He probably knows how to contact factory reps in order to deal with this sort of thing. In fact, his inspection of the damage will probably be required by Kubota - who have a good reputation for fixing things. The work that you describe is not unreasonable for a tractor, and IMHO would be exactly the sort of thing I'd expect a warranty to cover. ....

I HAVE A 10 YR OLD JD THAT HAS GONE THRU 2 OF THE FORGED PINS THAT BOLT INTO THE TRANS/AXLE BUT BOTH TIMES I BELIEVE IT WAS FROM ABUSE DUE TO PULLING TOO HEAVY A PLOW AND THE SECOND CHANGING DIRECTION WITH A BULKY 3PT CULTIVATOR HOOKED UP WITHOUT THE SWAY CHAINS TIGHT ENOUGH GIVING IT A WHIPLASH EFFECT. BOTH INSTANCES WERE A PULLING FORCE AS WHERE YOUR FORCE PUSHED BUT I CAN SEE IT HAPPENING. IF THE ENGINE DOESN'T STALL AND TIRES DON'T BREAK LOOSE SOMETHING HAS TO GIVE. ....

Your tractor warranty for a kubota L-series is two years on most all and three on engine and drive line. Your hitch breaking might be from a defective part and yes it would be covered under warrantee. The Kubota book doesn't recommend a 6' book scraper for the L-3010 model. This could be where a good relationship with your dealer will be a big asset to you. ....

Art, it is for comments like yours that I am glad we are blessed with such a wide variety of contributors here on this board, including representation from Dealer Principals such as yourself. I am sure the unbiased comments of a 'dealer' go a long way to soothing the fears of the owner of a (broken) tractor. Well done !!! ....

Thanks for everybody's input. I take my tractor back to the dealership on Thursday. I also wondered about the size of the grader box being too large for the tractor, but since I bought it as part of the package that my dealer put together, I didn't question it. I'll follow up in a few days to let you know how it's being handled by the dealership. ....

That's an unfortunate thing to happen, and I sure hope it gets repaired under warranty. I'm not sure how much effect scraper's width would contribute to the failure, as I understand it. Maybe there would be some additional leverage if the stump was hit on the end of the blade, or if the anti-sway chains were exceptionally loose. However, you'd think that hitting a stump generally in the middle of the blade would apply about the same force to the cases irrespective of blade width. I guess there would be more force due to the extra width of the blade, which probably was cutting at the time. However, differences like these seem pretty trivial, and you wouldn’t expect them to produce a failure unless combined with other weaknesses. Actually, if you were cutting with the rear cutter, then the top link was probably somewhat extended. With the box angled down, you’d expect the 3ph to float up and over the stump. Guess I'm building a theoretical case for a warranty repair, but maybe there's agreement to repair it already. For that matter, you'd expect that engineering design would be such that something on the link arm or mounting pin would give before the case breaks. I don't figure that any of us here actually need to read details of the story. ....

Jim if I was the one who sold it to you, as a package it would be fixed with no cost to you. I wish you luck with your dealer and he definitely should stand behind what he sells and how he sells it. ....

Sounds like what happend is the worst possible scenario. Heavy tractor, going backward, good traction, hitting corner of box. That is a lot of force which gets converted into a rotational torque as the box tries to rotate to the opposite side. That force is directed to the drag link on the side of the hit. The sway chain tries to hold the drag link in place while the other drag link if free to sway. The result would be a concentrated bending force at the end of the drag link on the hit side. Something is certainly going to bend. Breaking is not surprising. ....

Right. And if the sway chains were not properly adjusted to hold the arms from swaying too far - el busto big time when the scraper caught something solid, and the whole works twisted too far to one side. The sway chains should have held the arms from swinging that far to the side and causing the casting to break. ....
