I am having trouble connecting one of my hydrallic quick connects (which seems to have unconnected) to my loader. The other quick connects are easy to connect, but one (the one that lifts the bucket, so I can't move it) I can not push together all the way so that it connects. Is there any secret to make this work? I would like to find out this week-end so I can get some work done.ThanksPaul

Sounds like it may be the pressure build-up problem. See the John Deere section of CTB, thread started July 15th called Cannot Attach 430 Hydraulic Hoses. Lots of good information there. There are probably other similar threads in the archives.

You didn't say what you was doing.If you was putting your loader on I put a shot off vaule on the one that lifts right before the plug in.Then when i disconect i turn it off this takes the pressure off.You don't even have to shot off the tractor off.

Actually, I was just working with my loader. I had transported it to another location and unhooked sickle bar that runs on a separate hydraulic control. Maybe I did something during the process.
Do you really hit the hose to release the pressure? ....

Actually, a piece of 2x4 might be pretty good. Most times, I'm able to wrap a rag around the male end and depress the ball by pushing it against the tractor. I have used a plastic hammer, but I'm reluctant to use anything harder or heavier. I did have to loosen a fitting once. As noted in the other thread, the rag is essential. ....

Well, it turns out my solution was easier that I thought. 1st, I should not have tried to connect the hoses while the tractor was running. 2nd, I should have moved the loader controls around to each of the stops (which I thought I had done, but I guess not). Once I did this, the quick connect was easy to to use. Maybe I should have known this, but I as I have said, I am new to all of this.
Moral of the story, try the easy stuff first. ....

I've had an occasional problem that seems to be different than pressure build up in the lines. Sometimes, I can get a connector to seat by operating the valve while trying to seat the connector. I'm not sure if I'm relieving line pressures that I thought I had already relieved or whether some oil that has puddled in the female connector is being forced back into the valve. The female connectors on my SCV face up. Of course, I do all this with the tractor off and everything on the ground. People do connect lines without shutting down, but there's a safety issue or two. ....

ok, here's what i do: i wrap a heavy shop rag around the end of the hose fitting and push the hose against a solid object like the loader frame or such. most of the time a heavy squirt of hyd. oil will come out and then the pressure is released and you can connect the hose. SOMETIMES i have to wrap the end and use a channelock pliers and grip the end against the body of the fitting and squeeze to release the pressure, but that is only if it is real hot and the hose fitting has been exposed to the sun and the fluid has expanded. try the first method first. ....

Yes, the hammer or the 2x4 will work. I have seen many people use ether and a match to mount tires, and know lots of people who never wear seatbelts, on equipment or in vehicles. The mere fact that other people do it DOES NOT mean it is a SAFE practice. Please folks, if the hydraulic circuit is not equipped with a pressure relief system use extreme caution when connecting hydraulic lines. The easiest way to do it is to cycle the control valve fully with the engine off before attempting connection, this will relieve any pressure between the valve and remote outlet, then DON'T MOVE THE VALVE before trying to connect the lines, this way you are not trying to connect two pressurized circuits together, and the pressure has somewhere to go when released.
