I would like to find an attachment that would allow me to pick up items off the ground and load them, like a big pincher that might attach somehow to my front end loader. I load a lot of cinder blocks and firewood and want something that can reach down and sqeeze and then pick up and let go. I've seen something like this for the bobcats.Anybody seen anything like this for a compact utililty tractor?

David, what you are talking about is called a "grapple", which is basically a set of forks which clamp down on whatever is in the bucket (very handy for dealing with piles of brush), there is a slight variation called a "4-in-1 bucket" in which case the sides and bottom of the bucket pivot upwards away from the back of the bucket. These items are primarily used for demolition type work, an area where compact tractors are not commonly found, but these items are available, just not common. In fact we use a 6' skid-steer bucket and just change the mountings. Best of luck. ....

Dave, in addition to the grapple described by Murph, Woods makes a combined grapple and bucket. I prefer this unit because it has a flat bottom, similar to a bucket but without full sides and a split grapple on top. The split grapple has independent hydraulic cylinders and can grasp objects of various shapes without stressing the way a fixed grapple does. This unit can grasp everything from concrete blocks to brush. I also have the loader converted to accept skid steer attachments. ....

Dave, Do you have a backhoe? I have one and am going to some day have a thumb made for it. I have some ideas but don't have the material (steel) or a welder and the knowledge how to use it. I think a thumb would be very handy for picking up objects such as blocks, firewood or brush. David ....

I think loader bucket grapples could be very useful, although it might be a good idea to get an idea of how the grapples are designed and the intended use. For example, the grapples may not retract very far in some designs. Ordinary use of the bucket may be compromised when the grapples are mounted they fully retract. If an intended use is to grab logs, or other material that is longer than the bucket, it would be a good idea to make sure the grapples are capable of clamping a given diameter material onto the bucket top. The grapples, of course, do require an additional hydraulic control valve. ....

I sent a note to Leonard Sheaffer for more details. I do not have a backhoe and never plan to own one. The grapple is for my JD 4300 with loader. Loading fresh cut/wet firewood is breaking my back. Thanks for all the posts! ....
