We have two 4500 compact tractors that have the same trouble. When out on the road using C3 or4 around 1500-2000 RPM between fields I can hear a chatter coming from underneath and cant tell from what area. I first thought that it was coming from the DIFF but now it sounds like the front area? I don't hear it while in the field when the RPM is at 2000-3000 but running in a lower speed B-3 or 4. Any one have an idea?

Check the front drive shaft, ujoints as well as the yokes on the front diff and transmission output. I don't think the ujoints can be greased. ....

Everything is still turning except the engaging gear in the transfer case. BUT, it us still a valid question. I certainly hope they aren't roading it engaged. ....

Chief, no we don’t travel on the road with four wheel engaged. But maybe that’ll be a good test putting it in four wheel (adding pressure to the differential ) and take it out on the road and see if it still chatters. ....

I know the 2105s and that series have a drive shaft between the engine and hydrostat that have greasable u joints and have woodruff key issues, come loose etc. They are quite involved to replace, pulling the engine or rear diff/hydrostat unit. Sadly, the book doesn't give that as a service point or an interval. Many people have found out the hard way. ....

Rungreen, My first thought that it could be some internal issue that some one had come across earlier. Put I can slide under and look at the shaft that has a plastic tub the full length. ....
