My 17 hp Kubota easily handles a 60" rear mount finish mower. What I would like to know is how much more power a brush hog rotary cutter will take? I have heard it might only handle a 4' wide cutter, I have also heard that the rotary cutter does not pull as much power? What I am going to be mowing I currently cut with the Finish mower, albeit rather slowly. Any suggestions? Thanks DC Smith

There are light, medium, and heavy duty brush hogs. If you are only going to cutting grass and weeds (you say you are now mowing it with the finish mower), and not brush or small trees, you can use a light duty brush hog. I had a 4' one when I had a 16 hp Kubota and I have a 5' one now with my 27 hp Kubota. I think those are the proper sizes, although I'm sure you could use a 5' one for light work just as I believe mine would handle a 6' one now. ....

I have a 5' brush hog I use to mow my pasture. It consists of mainly bermuda grass with some weeds, buffalo grass and a few other varieties of native grass. The brush hog mows the taller stuff really well but it does not cut the bermuda as well as I would prefer. It cuts it but leaves it pretty scruffy looking. I tried my lawn tractor on it and it did great on the bermuda but left stalks of the tall stuff. I had to mow it 2-3 times to get the tall stalks done. I guess what I am trying to say is both implements have their purposes. Just something to think about. I have 32 hp and the 5' brush hog doesn't even test it on grass. The things I have read indicates that finish mowers don't require the hp brush hogs do, tho. ....

brushhogs will probably take more power that the finish mower. they will not do a good job cutting grass. the size you can handle will depend on what you are cutting. heavy grass will take more than thin weeds. small trees and brush will probably be harder on the cutter than the tractor. ....

I run a 4' bush hog on my Kubota B2400. That is the size the manual recommends. It has no problems with a 5' finishing mower or the 4' rotary mower on level ground but once I start on the steep slopes in the pasture it takes all the horsepower to climb and mow at the same time. I know it wouldn't handle a 5' bush hog under those circumstances. It appears as if the bush hog takes a lot more hp than a finishing mower. ....
