My JD 870 (purchased many years ago with the help of this forum)just quit running yesterday as if I had turned the key off. It was in gear and I was backing at the time. Now it does not do anything when I try to start it etc. I chk'd the battery voltage and it is over 12 volts at battery. I now plan to try and find my manual and wiring diagram and start trouble shooting. I thought maybe the symptoms would lead one of you gurus to tell me where to start. This tractor has always had one electrical problem such that most times the fuel gauge and temp gauge does not register -- some times it does, totally intermittent. This current problem needs more immediate attention :). Thanks in advance for your help. Ed

After checking the battery terminals and ground I'd locate and temporarily bypass all the safety cutouts, then check the wiring while shaking it for intermittent breaks. ....

Thanks for the input. I started checking after looking at the manual and wiring diagrams and was chking the voltage on the back of the keyswitch and noticed there was some dirt/residue on the keyswitch and while cleaning it and spraying with WD40 and measuring I heard a relay click (which I think was the fuel cutoff relay) and then everything seemed to be normal (ignition came on, tractor started etc.) While in maintenance mode I serviced the tractor, greased, changed oil etc. and so far no indication of the electrical problem. I don't know at this point if it was the keyswitch or another intermittent problem. I suspect the keyswitch as I was fooling with it when things started working again. Ed ....
