Hi, My Dad has a Deere tractor model 855. The fuel solenoid recently failed. (A broken wire) He replaced the unit but now can't get it restarted. He insists that the fuel system has been purged completely of all air. (At least he beleives it has)The exhaust has no fuel smell or color and it dosen't even try to start. No cough or firing of any kind. It has fuel at the injectors and we can hear the pump working. Is there something else to check? Any ideas would be appreciated. P.S. I wanted him to try a little either but he dosen't like that idea. Thanks, Jim

A mechic told me it is ok to us either! BUT FIRST YOU MUST UNPLUG THE BREAKER ON THE TRACTOR! either and glow pugs don't mix. The only thought I have is to have you injectors checked next. I'm assumeing it does spin over. ....

Jim, you say you have fuel at the injectors, but do you have any air there, also? You may need to bleed them until all the air bubbles are out and nothing but fuel comes out. And if you're going to try ether, you have a lot more nerve than I have! ....

I'm just taking a guess here. In my scant experience with air in the fuel lines, the tractor would get enough fuel to sort of start. It would barely keep itself going for awhile and then stop. If the tractor's doing zero, maybe the fuel solenoid isn't actually working. I guess that could be checked by loosening an injector line and cranking the engine to see if the pump is delivering fuel to the lines. ....

Well, he certainly has my sympathy....geting a system completely purged can be an all afternoon job and about all you can do is to keep doing it over and over. It sure sounds like there is a tiny air bubble trapped in the line between the pump and the injector. This is a common frustration, and what happens is that bubble is just sitting there flexing with each pump pulse and absorbing all the energy that should be moving the fluid through the injector and on into the cylinder. I'd bet dollars to donuts on this being the problem. Of course we are making the unproven assumption that the solenoid valve was bad in the first place, and that replacing it has solved the original problem of no fuel.
What I would do is to remove the injectors from the motor, put them somewhere where you can see them, and hook them up to their feed lines. Now the engine will turn over easier and you can bleed the injectors and see when they start to spray. It will be messy. Right now they are not spraying at all or you would smell it in the exhaust. When they are spraying nicely you put them back into the engine - trying not to get air back into the lines - and it will start just fine.
Do not use ether. It is not worth the risk to you or to the engine.

Jim, your Dad is right, it's best NOT to use ether (or other starting fluid with a diesel engine, it is hard on glow plugs, but far more serious is the risk of blowing a hole in the piston). If there is even a little air still in the lines the engine may not be very anxious to start, especially if the battery is getting low from cranking, try using a little WD-40 instead of 'quick-start' in the motor, this liquid is very similar to diesel in volatilaty and will not harm the engine or glow plugs. If the engine starts on the WD-40 but will not continue to run its own afterwards, double check that the fuel solenoid is working ok. Best of luck. ....
