My JD 4600 has developed a problem where it starves for fuel when I mow on a a slope that leans to the right. This is the side where the fuel exits from the tank so it can't be related to low fuel. The engine loses rpm to the point it almost stalls. Once I get on level ground it improves for a while but will still exhibit the same symptoms. If I let the tractor sit for an hour it seems ok again. Anyone experience a similar problem? Anyone with an idea on what the problem is. The fuel filter looks clean and the water ring is not floating. I only have 20 hours on the tractor.

Is there something in the tank (foriegn body) that rolls over and blocks the fuel egress? Is it more likely to happen at full throttle and/or with a low tank? ....

This may not apply but doesn't cost to check. Most equipment fuel tanks are vented in some way to assure that you do not develop a vacuum in the tank as the fuel goes down. These vents are usually integral to the fuel cap. I know you mentioned the right leaning hillside which may not be coincidence. Any way give it a look. Let me know what you find. Good Luck.

Terry--this is going to be a l--o--n--g shot, but have you considered that it is not fuel-related even though the RPMs are dropping? When my 4400 was new, it had a habit of losing RPMs after mowing for a few hours or losing RPMs after driving it down the road in high range axle for a couple of miles (to the point it could not even pull a small grade w/o shifting into middle or even low range axle). I checked the same things that you and others have mentioned w/o success. On one of its warranty trips back to the dealer, it was determined that one of the brake cables from the parking brake was set too tight at the factory which would cause the brake on that side of the tractor to drag until it heated up increasing its drag to the point that it would pull down the RPMs as the tractor moved forward. With this said, does your tractor lose RPMs while standing still or only when it is moving--if only when it is moving, perhaps one of the brake cables is too tight. Mike S. ....

Hope not to insult your inteligence here, but I've had a number of complaints over the years from customers who bought lawn and C.U. tractors from me. All of them complained about the engine stalling, coughing, or quitting while driving along sidehills. In every case they were leaning uphill enough to take enough weight off the seat to activate the operator presence system, thus killing the engine untill they got their butt planted again. Just a thought..

I must admit that I defeated the safety switch that is located under the seat. I suppose I will hear from the some members about this decision but it was just too annoying. This is not related to the seat switch. My dealer has checked the filter, fuel lines and the fuel tank but has found nothing. ....

Mike, the fuel starving problem only happens on a side hill when the tractor is leaning to the right. We suspected that there might be an obstruction in the fuel tank but have found nothing. The brake problem you mentioned occured on my 4300 but does not appear to be the same with the 4600. ....

Don,
I would have to agree with you,it happned to me one evening on my 4400,and then I started thinking about the safety switch under the seat,I had the same problem with my daughter driving are lawn tractor,she couldnt always keep the seat down and it would cut out.
