It's time for me to break down and buy a new running gear to make a wagon for behind my JD4300. I've been searching for a used gear around here (southwestern New Hampshire) for over a year with only one bite - as soon as I heard of it I phoned to find it had sold. I'm a bit shocked at what local dealers charge, too. The prices they quote are in the several thousands!What I'm looking for is a running gear for a smallish wagon, around 2-4 ton capacity for up to $1,000. I plan on making different tops (bale wagon, "hayride" wagon, lumber hauler, maybe a manure spreader or dump wagon). I hope to buy only one, ever, so wish to avoid cheesy angle iron ones. I lack welding skills/equipment/time so can't fabricate one.So far I've found gear at SSB (3-ton less tires $745 http://www.ssbtractor.com/page18.html), Gempler's (1-ton with tires $479 http://www.gemplers.com/cgi-bin/sgin0101.exe?UID=2000043023214203&T1=CC99&FNM=0&UREQA=N), and Northern (only 1-ton but only $230 with tires http://www.northerntool.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=47661&prmenbr=6970). Northern also have a 2-ton wagon for $800 but it looks as if metal parts of the sides would mean I'm more or less stuck with their top. The closest Central Tractor is 2 states away in New York, and I couldn't find one at Tractor Supply in Mass. after driving over 2 hours to get there. Gempler's gear seem to be made by Casco Cart Co. (which I'm hoping is in Maine) but I haven't been able to track them down yet. I have no clue about other manufacturers other than the very expensive ones at the local NH dealer.The Northern and Gempler's gear seem to be aimed more at ATV or garden tractor use and have a lower weight limit than my loader bucket's capacity, but at their prices I might settle for one of those. Does anyone have any experience or insights about these gear? Can anyone point me at a different source?

Here in central WI where there is a thriving mobile/modular home industry, the axles and wheels used in transport are recycled as the running gear for trailers. I have a trailer that has a 1960ish Chevy truck front axle that takes a 15' six-hole rim. Big tires of a common size are a real advantage in a trailer both for clearance and cheap tires. ....

I've found that Northern can be quite generous with their ratings on heavy duty equipment, so be careful if you plan to use that "1 ton" gear to its maximum capacity. I've also found that their service is great if you return a defective item, but much less pleasant if you're simply dissatisfied and want your money back. ....

The 3 Ton running gear shown on ssbtractor is made by Mill Creek Manufacturing (www.millcreekmfg.com). Mill Creek has a good reputation for quality. The 1 Ton and 2 Ton Wagons and Trailers you refer to in the Northern Catalog are made by Country Manufacturing (www.countrymfg.com) in Ohio. The prices in the Northern Catalog do not include shipping from Ohio. The prices listed on the Country Mfg Website do include shipping. The metal corners and sides can be removed from these if you want to do your own. From your description of your needs, it seems the Mill Creek unit might be closer to your expectations. I am unaware of other similar wagons or trailers sized for Compact Tractors. ....

Now that's a useful post. The URL's pointed to more info than my original sources. From this, it appears that the lighter gear are probably more appropriate for very light use, such as with a mower/garden tractor and that I'm probably better off with the 3-ton gear. ....
