The post from Chuck regarding the JD axle scuffing issue is positive proof that the compact tractor board is an extremely effective way of tractor owners communicating with one another. While many of the dealers are honest and knowlegeable, some are not. I am not sure how much information we would have recieved from the dealers and from Deere had we not been enthusiastically discussing this issue for the past year. I am disappointed in the way the company handled this problem and I suspect they would have hoped we quietly accepted the problem. I honestly believe that the compact message board made a considerable impact on the move by Deere to redesign the axles. I think many of us would have accepted the scuffing had there not been a forum such as this one that allows tractor owners to openly discuss what we like and dislike about the equipment we purchase.

Terry; That is a very true post. Here in Maine we didn't hear much of what was going on on out in the world unless one watched the news and then it was what the press wanted you to hear. Now with the computer and forums like this, well you said it.

How very true! A friend of mine has a 4100 and knew nothing about the scuffing problem until I informed him of it. Needless to say he is going to see the dealer and see that the repair is done. Great forum!

Guys,
It makes me feel great to see that the Deere 4000 owners have benefited from using the Board. I am sure Deere has benefited also by getting the feedback it takes to make a great Product even better.

Many of us, myself included, very much appreciate the CTB. However, having seen only one post indicating that JD actually replaced the defective front end and observing other posts indicating that their JD dealers were either unaware of the problem or that they could not find any DTAC bulletins in regard to the lawn scuffing issue, I am still somewhat cynical that JD is really going to take care of those of us that were the purchasers of early model 4200-4300-4400's. Mike, My dealer ordered my replacement axle for the 4600 yesterday. It will be a few weeks before I see the axle but my dealer assures me the axle update kit is on the way at no cost to me. Your right though, until I see the axle update installed I will not rest. I think we need to be persistant. If the problem is not cared for then we need to advise Deere in writing that we will not purchase another Deere product. I am confident the problem will be fixed. The unreasonable delay is what irritates me the most. ....

Guys,I'm sure the CTB has helped in many ways. But like it has been said many times there are a lot of us who have had no help at all. I have a 4300 JD built on August 2 1999(just 9 months old ).I contacted my dealer and he in turn contacted the field rep. and the field rep. said I didn't get the axel.So I e-mailed John Deere and ask them about it again and just received e-mail back saying I couldn't have the axel because I didn't have a belly mower.Wish I knew how to post these letters on the board. Then I think more people would really see what a great company John Deere is and how helpful they are in our buyer -- seller relationship. You should all read their literature about when you buy their tractor, your not just buying a machine, your starting a working partnership.Look hard at the company behind the tractor you buy---that's the John Deere Advantage.BTW the rearend has gone out twice in 50 hrs.Ken ....

I believe the way to deal with John Deere is through your dealer. Your dealer can get the problem resolved if they will push to get it done. When I was shopping for my JD 4400 w/R4's & no mower I wanted the best price, but wanted a Dealer that would take care of any problems I might have more. I paid $650.00 more at the Dealer I bought from because I felt they would take care of any problems I might have. This already proved out on the scuffing issue. I had ask about the scuffing problem before I bought my tractor in November & was told it would be taken care of.
In February when it looked like JD was not going to take care of the problem as they the had said before I purchased the tractor, I talked to my Dealer. The next day I got a call that the parts were on order and three weeks later I had a new axle. I do not know how they did it and I do not care how they did it they just did it. They are not a super big dealership, they just want to take care of there customers. The best price is not always the best deal. ....

I too am in debt to this board -- I would have thought the scuffing normal with the tractor had not it been for the comments here. As a result, JD & the dealer are providing me with a new tractor! (The current 4400 is 6mos. old) Do you think I would even consider any other make than a JD? Also, told anyone I come in contact with what a great company who stands behind their product will do. I've been the best ad that company has!!! And, the dealer too, deserves a lot of credit for going to bat for me. IMHO, John Deere will take care of the problem if the dealer works for (with) you. Good luck all! ....

Jack D. - could you please e-mail me. I would like some additional information about the process used by your dealer to rectify your situation. I am trying to resolve an issue I have with my JD and feel like I'm getting no where fast. The dealer claims to be working on it for me. However, it has been over three weeks since I told him what I would like to have happen and in those three weeks he has only given me an update if I call him. Thanks in advance.
