I currently have an early 90's B6200 with MMM that works terrific. The unit has 4WD, but no PS and the transmission is gear shift. I now have the need for a front loader and have about $7000 cash avaiable. My question is this: Should I keep the 6200 for all my grass cutting, and take the $7K and buy an older farm tractor with loader, PS and live PTO ( example Ford 860 or similar w/FEL)or should I take the 6200, sell it at market value ($4500) and add it to the $7K and look for a used compact with MMM and FEL. I really have no FEL experience, and I have no idea how those older machines work. For sure they are heavy (3000LBS) and powerful (30+HP), but are they as effecient as a compact with 4WD, HSD etc?? My front loader will be used for heavy duty residential work including driveway maintenance, earth moving, and some grading. I appreciate the input, especially from anyone that has used both an older farm tractor and a compact.

IMO it will be a long hard look if you only have 11500 and you are looking for one of the big three with 30 plus hp, MMM, FEL, HST and you want it in any newer condition than the one you already have. ....

Do you really need more than 30 hp? If you are looking for a good all around tractor, you could probably pick up a used B7500 or comparable with FEL and 60" mmm for about that. (Probably around 500 hours or so.) This would give you HST, 4x4, and a 3pt. Unless you are going to do alot of tilling, pulling loaded wagons, or heavy FEL work, I think you may be overkill to go beyond mid 20's hp. Even though I think Kubota give you the most for the money, I still prefer my JD due to the extra features... ....

If you want new, I'd look at the bx23 and similar kubota models. (I have a bx23) LOTS of features, best value for the $, and a piece of cake to use.
If you worry about depreciation alot or dont care a hoot about warranty, just keep your eyes peeled for slightly used tractor. If you can get a good enough deal, hang onto your old one as a spare (you can always sell it later). I am still partial to the kubota CUTS, but you may have to take what's out there (or just be prepared to wait awhile) ....

I really like the convenience of the HST for loader work. It makes the work efficient and not nearly as tiring. 4wd is another feature that I wouldn't want to be without with a loader, especially in the compact tractor size.
For a little more than the $11.5 you have to work with, I think you could find a good machine in the 25hp range that will do the loader work you are looking for and also be a size that can still accomplish your mowing.
There are always trade offs, since we ask these nmachines to do so many tasks. They aren't always the best at any given task, it's the versatilty that makes them so valuable. I would think you could find a machine that would meet all your needs, with some trade offs. Why pay to maintain two used machines. That will get expensive! ....
