I would like to donate to the tidal wave disaster. I have two issues, will the money actually go to the cause, and will my name be sold to every other charity. Your opinion/ experience please.

That's a tough question. Everyone learned the Red Cross (American Red Cross) doesn't give all the money donated for a specific disaster to that disaster. They siphon it off for their year long budget needs.

www.nonprofits.org is a big database of info on non-profits. You can get accounting info and such to determine which charitys actually give the majority of their money to the cause.

I saw another website on the news that I am trying to find for you. CNN.com has a list of charities on their website. I wish I had written down the address of the website on the news. Sounded like it would be a big help to you.

Doctors Without Borders is a legit charity. Noble effort really. I'll keep looking and post the site if I can find it.

meanwhile, try www.charitynavigator.org or the one I linked below. ....

This is just another example of the information exchange era.

What a tremendous site! I am so sick and tired of how many people can git their hands out for a donation and less then 10% even gits to a person that needs it...

THANK YOU FOR A GOOD LINK!

Harvey ....

Harvey, you're welcome.

I know it's the time of year for massive giving. I feel stingy when I tell them no. But I like to know how much of my money is actually going to the people who need help. Too many "charities" or "non-profits" are set up for the leaders to make ridiculous money or to make a ton of money for the call center. Unfortunately, it gives the legit charities a bad name. Hope the site links helped so you can help others.

Happy New Year! ....

I always feel comfortable giving through my church. I know they are extremely careful to spend it in ways that gain maximum effect. They wont waste it on organizations that are out to line their own pockets or are bogged down in beaurocragy.

Other than that some excellent organizations with history of getting a lot done for those in need with your money are,

World Vision
http://www.worldvision.org

Salvation Army
http://www.salvationarmy.org

Samaritans purse (Billy Grahams Sons org)
www.samaritanspurse.org ....
