I found a tractor I'd like to buy, but I'm in Idaho, and it's in Ottawa, Ontario. What are my shipping options? They all seem pretty expensive, according to the research I've done so far. Anyone going to Idaho from Ottawa? I'd get it myself, but renting equipment big enough to haul a 3500 lb. tractor is a little pricey. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Scott, if the seller will work with you it can be done pretty reasonably. The trick is that it needs to go on a truck that has a partial load or no paying load at all. And that is something that the person with the tractor can work out with his local (usually an independent) trucking firm. This type of shipping is "space & time available" and the most the trucker can usually give him about two day's notice - so sometimes the scheduling is tight. You need to have a loading dock at your end where it can be dropped off as well, and then just wait. I was told that things ship within the month. The carrier will call you when it is on it's way.
I bought a tractor this way last summer and it went smoothly. The tractor cost less than $300 shipping from Washington state to Denver, Co. I don't have any idea about what happens with the border crossing that you need to do. Has anyone imported a used tractor from Canada? ....

At the boarder, you need to be there, and you need to know what paper work is required. I think just a bill of sale does it. You can do it yourself, or you can use a customs broker who will tell you what you need and make the customs transactions for you. Companies that have experience in international shipping already have customs services at the border crossings they use and would make arrangements for you.
Shipping a vehicle internationally can be very complex. For example, if the tractor gets impounded at the border while paper work clears, an independent trucker won't want to wait for it. The tractor could end up in a custom's warehouse until other arrangements are made.
Roger's idea is how I was going to bring an old 3/4 ton & RV from AZ to Ontario. Brokers can be found who will make those sorts of arrangements, including customs, but they usually work terminal to terminal. Prep work and transportation to a terminal in Ottawa is still required. It gets expensive. Using an Ottawa based trucking company to arrange for the whole deal is even more expensive.
Companies that specialize in international car shipping might be good if the ROSP is removed. The ROSP height is probably going to preclude use of some trailer types and would complicate the shipping. It's important to know the ROSP height very accurately.
It's also important to know if things like the fuel tank have to be drained to go through any jurisdictions on the route. It does get complicated, and that's the reason for the expense. I knew several owner/operators who go from near Ottawa through Idaho. I'm sure they would do it cheap, but I'm not sure I'd want the deal. You could end up with the tractor off-loaded some obscure place. I sold the ¾ ton in AZ. It was just too difficult and too expensive. At least tractors don't have to deal with motor vehicle registrations and insurance.

Scott, if it's of any assistance, in the course of building golf courses we travel pretty extensively, and to say we're experienced at moving tractors is an understatement at the very least... If you contact me directly with a little info. about what & where, I could give you a price on bringing it out with one of our loads. Otherwise I could at least get you some prices on the load, 'top-loading' (putting it on with other compact but heavy loads) is possible, but at 3000lbs it is unlikely because of the problems of weight and loading, and with fuel prices the way they are right now it isn't likely you will see many 'empty' trucks on the road, it's cheaper to park them (diesel is ~$0.70/l or $4.20US/gal in Canada). Customs should not be a problem presuming the tractor is used, free-trade took care of most of the hassles. If it is new it depends on where it was manufactured. Best of luck. ....

Hi Scott: I have also been looking at bringing a used tractor across the border into NY State. From what I have been told by two different Canadian dealers, it is simply a matter of paying some $65 dollars for a broker to handle the paperwork. I haven't done it, so I can't say if there is indeed more to it or tell you if it worked. However, if the right machine shows up (Zetor 3340, 4340, or 5245) in the right condition for the right price, I'll let you know how it goes! ....

Bruce, just a follow up, there is a Zetor 3340, 4wd with "Hardy" 55DL loader, it says "low hrs." but not how many hours in the ad, asking price is $17,700CDN (~$12,000US) as an example.... Let me know. ....
