I have a 850 Deere set up with a mule drive (vertical PTO) to power the 72" belly mower. I have a rythmic knocking noise I think is coming from the mule drive. To isolate this noise I want to remove the mule drive and run the PTO without it. However the vertical PTO is seized to the PTO shaft and I can't break it loose. Any ideas? How hard can I pull on it without damaging the tractor PTO.Thanks, Craig

Craig, try to heat the coupling with a torch,burnsamatic or hair dryer.You can heat it very hot without any damage to the spline.Just don't take to long so the heat is concentrated on coupling and not the spline shaft.The heat will expand the coupling ( most ) times you can tap it off with a hammer.Hope this helps.KenW ....

Craig, I think you have already found the problem, the Mule, if it is seized to the pto, it's probably also dry as a nun's _____ in the 90 deg. drive. That is the noise you hear, same as a 4wd pickup trying to turn to sharp, knock, knock, knock. Anyways, you can try a little heat, but be VERY careful, heat, bearing seals, and tempered/hardened steel don't mix well. I would try to gently but persistantly knock it off with a wood block and small sledge. Squirt the joint full of WD40 or something first and let it soak in well. It may help the situation if you can get a hold of an air chisel with a blunt driver, but be EXTRA CAREFUL. Last resort, try to grease the heck out of the bearings in the mule and free them up in place, if there is no grease zerk use a needle tip through the seals, then run it with nothing connected for a while at idle. Thanks for your help everyone. I finally had to take the gear box(mule drive) and tractor to my local dealer Steffen Equipment(small but very adequate and is great for parts). They dimantled the drive tourched the PTO shaft and sleeve and finally broke it loose. Long story short the gearbox was rebuilt and the PTO shaft on the tractor was replaced. The dealer I bought this from gave me a satisfaction guarantee (on a 1984 850JD) and delivered the unit over 130 miles. Mark Puriton of Barton county implement (www.bartoncountyimpl.com) in Lockwood and Lamar Missouri agreed to help me with the cost of the repairs. I'm a true JD person, but I feel it's your dealer (in my case dealers that make a difference. ....
